More and more I am coming to believe that Winds of Winter will be the final book released and a Dream of Spring will be finished out by HBO. HBO will wrap it up in seven season, eight tops. IMO.

Why do you think HBO is in such a hurry to end it? It's one of the most popular shows on TV right now, and getting them millions of new subscribers. Other than the younger cast's age, what other reason could they have to finish it as soon as they can?

They got two seasons out of Book 3, and surely they can get at LEAST 3 seasons out of Books 4 and 5.

By then, either Book 6 may be out, or GRRM will have given them enough info to be able to adapt his story for another couple of seasons. Don't see why they couldn't get up to 10 seasons, other than the age of the Stark kids, like I said.

because they keep saying things like these

quote:
“It feels like this is the midpoint for us,” Benioff says. “If we’re going to go seven seasons, which is the plan, season 4 is right down the middle, the pivot point.”

maybe i am just hoping, but i think you are starting to see a new trend with the better shows out there, of having a "definitive" end point (breaking bad, justified, etc), instead of a show just going and going and going until the wheels come off (and ratings plummet), come out and say, we are doing X number of seasons. give the writers something to work to, and keeps the series' from going stale.

but maybe i am just hoping that is the case.

I like it when shows end before they're stale. Sure, there are moments when you want it to go on, but that's far preferable to wanting it to end. The UK's The Office is the first time I really saw this philosophy in action - two seasons and one series-ending finale. Could easily have dragged on, but they stepped away at the height of the game.

Anyway, if GOT ends in a similar fashion, I'd be happy with that.

I think because it's backbone is a book storyline it won't have this "burnout" problem.

Think more of Harry potter than the typical show. GoT is complex enough to stretch into 8+ seasons.

This is you watch The Walking Dead, fills in the gap perfectly.

Is it weird that I had a dream last night that I was attending the wedding in the upcoming season?

I haven't read the books so I'm not spoiling anything, but I've watched all of the previews for this season, the 30 minute special that HBO is running right now, and I read a Seppinwall/producers interview yesterday. I was at the upcoming wedding and Joffery was on a tear, killing people, torturing people, etc., and I'm just trying to stay out of the way.

This might be evidence #1 that I'm a little too amped about this upcoming season.

I wish I would dream I'm in Westeros. That sounds sweet.

I agree with this. I think the writers can do a better job if there is a definite end point that they are working toward. Breaking Bad did it perfectly. You probably also retain more subscriptions when fans can say, "We have to keep HBO for the next two years to finish GOT. My biggest complaint with Walking Dead is that it's now evident to me (and probably was to many others long before me) that there is no real end. They are just going to keep ending each season with hope/questions/cliffhangers as long as people keep tuning in.

3 seasons out of books 4 and 5?? No way. Hell, they may lose ME if they drag those storylines out that long and I'm a book reader.

They'll be almost completely caught up with where the books are now by the end of season 5. No question.

At this point in ok with that. Something about that guy last season seemed like a soap opera star...really cheesy.

That's gonna confuse a hell of a lot of people. It's hard enough keeping track of characters as it is.

Wow, not even attempting to keep continuity.

I think the biggest issue out of making 3 seasons out of Books 4 and 5 is the that Book 4 intentionally didn't have several POV characters in it that waited for Book 5. Thus you would only have Book 5's material for those characters and storylines. When you combine this with the fact the world is getting bigger and thus each storyline gets less time I don't know how you can keep that massive cast engaged when some may only have what amounts to a handful of chapters relating to them.

The only solution will be to deviate further from the books and come up with some new storylines for those characters which honestly may not be a terrible thing. I am enjoying seeing the show and the books as 2 separate entities.

Also agree it is odd they decided to replace Daario with someone who looks so different from the previous character. That's going to really confuse some casual viewers.

You guys have forgotten about the true heir. No, not a spoiler as I have only read through book 3. But the ******* son of RObert was being hunted in season 1

Gendry? What about him? Last we saw of him, Ser Davos put him on a boat and let him escape.

Not sure what point you're making...?

More interesting is why. He's gonna be the next Transporter.

I guess it worked for Statham.

Without having done any research on the subject, I would assume the recasting was a result of the previous actor having a conflicting gig. That's the problem with this story having so many characters who may have long stretches between appearances on the show/storyline.

Wasn't the whole point of even introducing Gendry into the story to show that he is the true legitimate heir to the throne? I haven't read far enough in the books to know how this pans out.
redbaron788
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Its not that he is the one true heir. Its that he is proof that the blonde kids AREN'T the true heirs. You can't inherit anything as a bast-rd.

This thread is not for book discussions. As far as any of us non-readers know, Gendry may be in the rightful heir discussion, but leave what you may or may not have read...out of it.

And I'm with Redbaron....I think it was more to show that the blondes weren't the true heirs.

Well in the books it's a different ******* that gets taken to dragonstone, Gendry plays a different role.
redline248
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Stive, I thought the show made it pretty clear Gendry was a *******. It's also clear the blonde kids aren't Baratheons, so technically the 'rightful' heir is Stannis. This isn't in question.

Now, as things happen to be, the rightful ruler is the one that wins. Maybe Gendry comes back and takes the whole kingdom.
Stive
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I get that. Based on how Jon Snow is treated, I don't think *******s are in line to inherit anything. Back when they were chasing Gendry down, I originally thought it was because Cersei/Joffrey didn't want any challenges to the thrown. Then I came to the conclusion that she just wanted them all dead because she hated Robert and his lifestyle (thus the reason she killed the girls too).

And you're right, I think the "heir" is whoever wins. Robert won originally, thus the Targaryeons (or however you spell it) weren't the heirs. Now, if the Lannisters win it....they've got the claim. If Dragon chick comes back and wins it....she's got the claim, etc.

It's ever evolving.

I was mainly correcting the guy because I didn't want any "well in the book, this guy...." type comments; especially about upcoming stuff. The guy had said earlier he had read through book 3 and seemed like he was alluding to some things that might happen in the future, based off of what he remembered. That's what I meant my correction to be directed towards.....not the fact that Gendry was a bas**** and did or didn't have a right to the throne.
redline248
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I understand that concern.
Zombie
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I understand, and like I said, I had not read far enough into the books to divert from the show. It was an honest question I had and now that it has been explained that he would have been proof that Joffrey wasn't a biological, that makes a lot more sense.

The Debt

I dont understand why people dont like the Theon torture plot. He betrayed Robb, he killed the people that raised him, he beheaded his teacher for a verbal insult, he killed some innocent orphan boys. The moment he took up arms against the Starks, everyone thought Theon was a POS, so why are yall not enjoying his torture? He deserves this.

Perhaps he immediately becomes a sympathetic character because he is a prisoner. But I guess that says more about the viewer than the character.
mattvswild
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Eh, I just found the torture plot stale after a few scenes. We get it - Theon is in a bad place and Bolton's b****** is a sociopath.
