Any cognac bottle recommendations?

Vieux Carre, French Maid, Sidecar all call for cognac and I'm fairly certain I've never bought a bottle before.

I've started buying a pint instead of a 750mL bottle on some items I only use to mix occasional cocktails. It takes years to get through a 750mL cognac for me. I have a pint of Deux Freres VSOP in the cabinet right now that isn't open. It's pretty cheap and I haven't tasted it. PDT Cocktail book recommends Hine VSOP but the book was published in 2011 when lots of things cost a lot less.

Hine rare is a great cognac. I kind of like them all. I stock Courvoisier VSOP and Martell Blue Swift for cocktails but also sip them neat.

I like some of the nicer stuff from Remy as well but do not mix it.

I've only tried Hennessy and Martell. It takes me a while to got through a whole bottle. You can also try an Armagnac for a slightly different cocktail. Armagnac:Cognac as Rye:Bourbon

Berry Compote Sour:
2 oz London Dry Gin
2 oz Berry Compote Light Syrup (boiled fresh Berry mixture, strained and added sugar 1 part sugar: 3 parts Compote consomme)
1 oz Lemon Juice
.75 oz Amaro Montenegro
1 oz foamer (I used Aquafaba)
Small sprig of rosemary goes into shaker with rest of ingredients. Dry shake. Then shake over ice. Double strain. Garnish as desired: extra rosemary or lemon peel or both.

Kentucky Maid:
2 oz bourbon
1 oz lime
.75 oz simple
8 mint leaves
2 wedge cucumber
Muddle the last two then add remaining ingredients and shake. Very refreshing and hard to know there's bourbon there!

.5oz Drillaud Banana Liqueur
.5oz egg white
dry shake
wet shake
strain over chilled cocktail coup glass
1 dash Fee Bro. Aztec Chocolate Bitters

Tastes like a banana split to me

Called for equal parts but I upped the bourbon & chartreuse.

.5oz coffee Liqueur
2 dash coffee pecan bitters

I altered the Smuggler's Cove recipe:
  • 2 ounces premium aged rum (Plantation Stiggin's Fancy Pineapple Smoky Formula)
  • 1/2 ounce orange curaao (Clement Creole Shrub)
  • 3/4 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed
  • 1/2 ounce orgeat (BG Reynold's store bought; recipe calls for 1/4 oz orgeat and 1/4 oz of rich simple)

Great tiki mug! I wound up at Tiki Farm after checking the Strong Water site, and ordered three mugs there. I plan to break them in with the Mai Tai recipe above.

I'm looking for a bourbon/rye cocktail that would be good smoked. I'm trying to come up with something fun as we are hosting a couples shower. A bartender friend suggested the Scofflaw. I've seen many different variations but it's basically rye + dry vermouth + lemon + simple and or grenadine.

Any suggestions appreciated!

So many options for the rum side.

I tend to go 1oz Appleton 12 & 1oz Smith & Cross. More funk and a bit lighter. No wrong answer. The Stiggins is pretty tasty but I find it to be a bit sweeter.

The Smugglers Cove book is amazing. Don's Own Grog is killer, but...you have to have Giffords blackberry liquer it's way more pungent and intense. But that stuff is hard to find.

A Boulvardier or even a Manhattan comes to mind. Smoked Sazerac's don't suck either. I think boozier cocktails go better smoked than most citrus/fruit but there are exceptions. I like some pineapple drinks with a bit of smoke. Usually with tequila and/or mezcal.
