Duncan Taylor also does some dang good stuff for indy bottlers.

Sherry finished single malts are fun, especially when you get the chance to side by side different styles (PX, oloroso, amantillado, Palo cortado and so on)

Newest edition of the Ardbeg Anthology (Unicorn's Tale) available via TW Concierge Program for $159.97. This is a 14 year old while the last version was a 13 year old.

Snip from and email from Ardbeg:

The second edition in the Ardbeg Anthology Collection has reared its smoky head. Inspired by the tale of the Islay Unicorn, this rare 14 Years Old has been matured in a marriage of aromatic Madeira and classic Ardbeg bourbon casks.

Like the myth itself, this spirit may appear sweet in nature, but it hides a sinister and smoky twist… not to be underestimated.

The Unicorn's Tale will be available in the USA from July 15th 2024* - keep an eye out then!

Distillery Tasting Notes:

Perfumed aromas of luscious tropical fruit flow on. Rich, sweet, aromatic, and fruity, baked banana bread and syrupy sponge pudding fill the senses. Notes of treacle trot into a distinctive whiff of burning cedarwood. Zesty notes of lime and sweet peaches canter across the palate. A burst of rich smoked fruit and baked bread prance into antiseptic lozenges, creosote, and aniseed. Soft barley malt combines with nutmeg and peat smoke. A satisfyingly long finish welcomes more tropical notes, with fragrant heather, warm toffee and smoked butter on the horizon.

You lost me at "antiseptic lozenges" LOL

It'll be a love it or hate it, but it's their first time using Madeira for finishing. I pre-ordered two, though TW says arrival in the fall. May just have to find a third on the shelf at a Spec's before those other two arrive.

Some of yall might crucify me for this, but I'm getting put off by the plethora of no age statement bottlings coming out. Just slap a fancy label on and act like it's special when at the end of the day all it is, is young whiskey. Ardbeg has been getting really bad about this.

Said the same thing August last year in this thread, frustrating but at least this latest Ardbeg has a 14 year age statement so there's that.

First post in the scotch thread, and this may be unpopular

But I prefer to drink scotch on the rocks compared to bourbon.

Day 3 with no power, so scotch on the rocks it is. Arran 10 is really hitting the spot tonight. Any others I should consider similar to this?

That's not a bad way to drink scotch at all! Little water opens the scotch up a bit and it's too hot this time of year a lot of times for straight liquor to sound as appealing.

I have sampled Arran 10. I would say Glenmorangie 10 might be close to it. Been a while since I've had either…but if I recall right I got more of a light highland scotch profile from the Arran 10, and not an Islay profile.

Always drink it how YOU like it, there is nothing wrong with that at all. No reason to force something you don't like, that's just silly. I've got a lot of Arran in the bunker from their early days, will gladly share if you're in Houston, lots of oddball cask finished stuff I acquired years ago when they were getting started.

Don't be a stranger here, there aren't many of us but you'll get good feedback.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll try and post in here when I try new things.

My Grandfather was a Johnny walker red label drinker. Scotch always brings back good memories with him as a kid, and sneaking some sips from his glass at a way too young of an age.

I find it depends on the scotch. Some do better on ice than others. 90% of mine I drink neat, but everyone is different.

Finished off the last of my BizarreBQ this weekend. I don't drink much scotch during the warmer months, but we have had some nice weather so it sounded nice.

Need to find my next peated scotch from Islay. Recommendations in the $40-$75 range? Want to try one that's new to me.

Ardbeg

Wanting to venture outside of my known universe for this next one.

Also, I have that chart saved, but I know it's not everything and figured some personal input might be nice. I want something not so light in color but also I want some peat.

How much peat do you want? Lightly smoky, chewy, or slap you across your face?

Not light. I don't want to have to search for it. But maybe also not the only thing you taste.

I haven't tried many in the low price point of your range so can't comment much there.

Lagavulin 16 is $90ish dollars, but if you feel like splurging...

Bruichladdich Port Charlotte 10 year is $75 or so.

Ardbeg Uigeadail is also about $75 and is both sherried and peated.

Talisker 10 year is about $75 and leans more coastal brine notes than heavy peat smoke, although it does have some peat.

Lag 16 for sure but could go younger with Lag 8 which is around 70-75 bucks. That said, I'd pay the extra and get the 16 year, my favorite always on the shelf single malt

Ha meant to add that I went looking at some small local shops today and found a bunnahabhain ceobanach batch 2. This is a heavily peated release that came out in 2015, there was so much dust built up on the lid it was laughable, and now it's home with me.

I saw one at Spec's in college station a couple weeks ago, Texas location. Even chuckled to myself thinking that's not something you see every day.

Ardbeg's re-release of their 17 year old is now available for pre-order on Total Wine Concierge for $179.97, though only available to folks in AZ, CA, CO, FL, MN, NJ and WI. Bit of a bummer no pre-order for TX on this one.
