Good, we didn't get roped in to cedi
Both players we are getting are on expirings. Essentially paying $8MM+ for a second rounder.
Are you guys with me now?
After a letdown on draft night when the Spurs whiffed on a chance to be bold, now the Spurs slept through free agency.
I just don't get the plan here. You guys don't think the Spurs are planning on tanking this year? It seems like the whole plan is to run it back with a bottom 3 team + Wemby, and we already know the plan with Wemby is going to be to limit the wear and tear as he learns the NBA game.
I think they've fallen too in love with the idea of collecting assets and preserving cap space that they've forgotten that at some point you have to use that capital. We can't roster 43 second round picks, and cap space is worthless if you wait until every free agent has signed to try and use it.
Or they are preserving cap because the options right now are complete ass.
And listening to Pop's press conference the other day... he really likes this group of guys. I think they're being very careful with maintaining chemistry by not bringing in guys with big salaries who don't necessarily deserve it. Let these guys all turn 20 and 21 together and grow organically. They had a terrible record last season but some of that was due to injury. They rarely had Vassell, Sochan, and Johnson on the floor together. I also think Collins turned a corner and they really liked what Bassey was starting to do before he got hurt.Sher Thing said:
Yeah I don't think there's anything wrong with taking a patient approach to this. Wemby is 19 years old and is going to take some time to get acclimated. See what you have in your young guys this season... Wemby, Vassell, Keldon, Sochan, Branham, Collins, Wesley, etc. and add some more top prospects through the draft next season. You will still have loads of $ to spend at that time and have a better idea of what you need.
That's the price of doing business with veterans, I don't love those prices either, but it's not my money the team is spending, they have to hit a salary floor.Guitarsoup said:
Also, who do you want to give massive, long-term contracts to? VanVleet?
I loved Bruce Brown for us, but not at 2y45mm like Indiana gave him.
Jeremi Grant got 5y160mm. He;s never been an All-Star and never had a single vote for All-NBA or All-Defense.
Khris Middleton just shot .436/.315, is old and just got a 3y105mm contract.
Wizards gave Kuz a 4y105mm contract.
Jakob got 4y80mm.
I'm not hating that we didn't offer any of these guys.

Lakers gets Reaves for $14m per year. Good deal. Lakers did a solid job this off season.
Lopez back to bucks on two year deal.

Also probably working out Dev's extension now.

Yall want the Spurs in on this?
Ok, Portland sends their three worst contracts that aren't Jeremi Grant to Miami.
Miami sends all their good young guys to Portland as well as all their 1st round picks.
Spurs send Birch to Portland.
Portland and Miami send a bunch of second round picks to the Spurs, because Brian Wright has a 2RP fetish.Oh, we also get one year of overpaid Kyle Lowry.
Cap Floor reached. Next year's cap room preserved so that we can do nothing with it then.

We have 16 players under contract, (15 guaranteed) and are 3mm from the salary floor. All this includes Primo's 4.3mm.
That also includes Lamar Stevens unguaranteed 1.9mm. So if we cut him, we still have 15 players and are ~5mm from the floor.
117.4 in salary without Stevens, 119.25 with. 136mm cap, 122.4 floor.
So we can cut Stevens and Birch and take in a ~18mm player via trade or signing and not touch the cap.
Or they should just sign a random fan to a $5mm guaranteed contract and cut their ass after they get yelled at by Pop for sucking.
