Good lord, I'd hope that it's not a straight line swap. Gotta be a 3rd team in the mix right?

Thats some stuff you do tinkering on basketballgm or 2kWhatever.

Saw a tweet or r/nba post chronicling Westbrook's 5 year $207M extention or whatever that crazy contract was. Year 1 OKC. Year 2 Houston Year 3 Washington Year 4 Lakers Year 5 Jazz.

Now that's impressive.

The Rockets were dumb enough to give up multiple draft picks to get him. Every other team had to add draft picks to get rid of him and the Jazz will just flat out pay him to never come to work.

They must have been tipped off he wouldn't re-sign. That's the only reason I can imagine for such a horrific deal.

I don't know what y'all are smoking but JP was never getting 2 firsts. Was never happening unless both were so highly protected they never would have conveyed. To get 3 picks out of him on the cusp of him being an UFA is a good deal for the Spurs. I'll change my tune if I'm the first they did receive is strongly protected, but if it's only top 4 or something , that's a win.

Khem sucks and it owed 7mm next year. Not even an ending contract.

That first better be top 1 protected like Boston

Two firsts was a pipe dream. But all the protections?

Wright doing his buddy in Toronto another solid at the Spurs expense.

And it's not just about the picks. This guy has seven million guaranteed next year.

birch's contract alone was worth the two seconds.

So we traded away our best trade piece for a protected first? Come on.

I haven't seen what the protections are. But even if the 1st rounder is lottery protected, this move keeps the Raps in the playoff mix which all but ensures it will convey.

And like you said, Birch is a good trade chip for future deals. I'm sure the Spurs aren't done.

The pick is 2024.

Jakob is a good player but he isn't a player that you build around. I hope that this means that Charles Bassey is called up and gets more playing time. He has 23 ppg avg with 9 rpg in the G League this year.
Bottom line is that it seems that Jakob doesn't figure in to the Spurs long term plans.

Also, the report is that the trade gained another 2.7 million in cap space.

I will wait to pass judgement on this one.

Athletic:

Spurs acquire Khem Birch, 2024 protected first-round pick and two second-round picks
The Spurs have been pretty adamant about acquiring first-round picks for all of the veterans they send out. They got a first for Derrick White last trade deadline. They got a first-round pick for Young as well. Then to really get the rebuild going, we saw the Spurs send Dejounte Murray to Atlanta for picks and assets. The Spurs have been acquiring picks left and right, while also making sure they're heavy in the mix for the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes.

San Antonio has the third-worst winning percentage in the NBA and the worst net rating in basketball. The Spurs are serious about this rebuild and giving themselves the best chance to get Wembanyama or maybe even Scoot Henderson, another top notch prospect in the 2023 draft. Birch gives them another big body to throw around for the rest of this season.

This move is about ensuring they stay in the bottom three of the league to maximize their lottery odds while also getting more future draft capital. They've done their job in that respect.

The First rounder is only 1-6 protected. And the 2nds are all unprotected

Top 6 protected until 2026.

This years second rounder (unprotected).

The other second rounder is their 2025, also unprotected.

Terms came out better than reported. Looks solid now terms have been reported.

Durant is 34 and has missed 150 games over the last three seasons and this is what Phoenix gave for him:

unprotected picks from the Suns in 2023, 2025, 2027, and 2029
pick swap option in 2028

Mikal Bridges 26yo - 17/4/4 on 46/39 shooting this year; 51/39 shooting over the past 3 seasons
Cam Johnson 26yo - 13/4 on 46/43/85 shooting the past two seasons
Jae Crowder - assume gets flipped somewhere

That's a great haul.

From ESPN:
Quote:

San Antonio Spurs: B+

The same relative youth that made Poeltl an attractive trade chip also meant the Spurs could have simply re-signed him this summer amid a rebuild. Clearly, his presence wasn't enough to keep San Antonio (the league's third-worst team at 14-41 with the worst point differential in the NBA at minus-10.1 PPG) from accumulating ping-pong balls.

Still, the Spurs were probably wise to grab value for Poeltl while they could. Like every other team near the bottom of the standings, San Antonio is hoping to land the No. 1 pick and draft center Victor Wembanyama this June. Additionally, there's no guarantee Poeltl would have re-signed as an unrestricted free agent.

Despite taking back Birch's contract, the Spurs actually increased their cap space with this trade after using some of it to complete Tuesday's trade for Dewayne Dedmon. San Antonio now has $25 million in remaining cap room. With Russell Westbrook landing in Utah, it's unlikely the Spurs can use all of it before the deadline, but they'll give it their best shot in the remaining hours.
