I'm not going to lie, I really want Odegaard. Especially if the money is right.

Which is a little weird because it's not my money.
If you say you hate the state of politics in this nation and you don't get involved in it, you obviously don't hate the state of politics in this nation.

For the money I think I would go for Aouar or Nkunku but looking at bigger picture, I like the idea of going after Odegaard & Sander Berge (Xhaka replacement) and then make a run at Haaland next summer when he has a release clause kick in to his contract.

Haaland
ESR -Odegaard - Saka
Berge - Partey
Tierney - Gabi - White - ???
???

How does that look compared to the current outlook?

I don't know Berge but it would appear our mid-field is finally at the level it needs to be.

We'll get way outbid for Haaland

Reasonable chance but hear me out...

What teams are big enough to go for him...

Real - Want Mbappe but also have some financial issues
Barca - significant financial issues
PSG - maybe if they lose Mbappe
Chelsea - Just bought Lukaku
City - Trying to buy Kane
ManU - Likely biggest competition
Bayern - won't spend the money

If City can't pry away Kane, I think that is where he ends up. If they land Kane the only reasonable option is ManU or us (being slightly biased). If we had Berge & Odegaard that could be a draw for him. Hopefully we will also be back in EL/CL next season.

Maybe I'm being cynical but even teams that have financial issues normally find a way to make it work anyways

I get the cynicism, but Arsenal is still a massive club. Get Odegaard and you never know, Haaland might be possible next year. Especially if we can finally offload some players.

Heading into opening day with three signings and still have Xhaka and Laca on the books from a team that finished 8 last year. Some of you guys are talking about Haaland?!? You've already moved on from this debacle and think next year will somehow be better?

chjoak

Haaland and his agent didn't really want to move this year. They explored options but they are fully aware that they can both make more cash (salary + bonus + agent fees) next summer when it will cost the buying team less to get him (75m euro release clause starting June 2022). My point is that all the ST movement this summer reduces the number of teams that would theoretically be in for him. Signing his national captain (and friend) plus possibly signing another of his national teammates may give us a slight edge assuming we are willing to pay the price.

This offseason shows that we are willing to spend money (atleast for now). The problem is...

A) the market is terrible because the average team (the ones that would want our average players) have no money to spend
B) Edu/Arteta are still making suspect decisions (chasing Ramsdale, Maddison, etc...) when there are better deals to be made

Haaland is likely a pipe dream but it is not an impossibility.

No money to spend? I'd have moved Willian for a case of champagne and a couple kilos of blow. I feel like the more things change in the front office the more they stay the same. I have very little faith this year will be any better than last. I think a Europa League spot is our ceiling.

Willian not moving is his own fault. Think we would let him go for nothing as well. Was gonna move to MLS but they wouldn't entertain his salary demands.

I mean you're probably right about Haaland, but the reason we weren't able to offload this year was because of the market and the current contracts on players. It may very well be easier to do so next year. And if we have a lot of space and a prominent Norwegian on the team (big if still), Haaland is the kind of player that could single handedly put us back in top 4 contention or better. I could see the Kroenke's doing that. I'm saying there's a chance

It's not a matter of what we wanted for him, its that he makes 100,000 quid a week and no one is going to pay anything near that for a doorstop.

We've got old players on bigger contracts. And they aren't really that attractive to teams. I like Xhaka and appreciate what he's done for us but who wants to pay for him? Same with Willian. Our young guys, other than Willock, are all on potential signings because we rarely play them. So yeah, someone might take them at the end of the window as a flyer but we've got very little to offer.

Auba out for Brentford. Looks like it'll be Saka, Laca, and Pepe then.

Scratch that, Laca out as well. Maybe Xhaka will be our 9.

Odegaard talks really hitting up. Fee in the range of 45-50 million.

Missing both our first choice strikers - neither of which were in the summer tourneys - due to injury/match fitness for the first match is just soooo Arsenal.

I think the most probably option is Pepe plays as the striker and Willian starts as a winger with Saka opposite. What I'd like to see is either Martinelli (only been back a week but has been training with Brazil all summer so he is match fit) or go ahead and start Balogun.
agdoc2001
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I was being facetious, but am with you - would much rather see Marti or the Balo-gun get the start. If we start the season with Willian on the pitch, I think I'm done.
chjoak
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Given who we know is out, I would go with...

Balogun
Pepe - ESR - Saka
Xhaka - Sambi
Tierney - Mari - White - Bellerin/Cedric
Leno

Would like to see Martinelli but not sure he should start given he has not been back in training long.
Went Bellerin/Cedric over Chambers because Sambi likes to come back deep so I see Bellerin/Cedric's willingness to push forward as a bigger asset in this match.

Friday Night Football! Great environment! Xhaka shoul be a good steadying influence for the younger boys on the pitch. Let the fun begin!
