I wouldnt be opposed to seeing him split time with Yuli at 1B, utility guy for the other infielders and DH.Chewy said:
Just looked it up. Hensley started 31 games at SS in Sugar Land last year.

Dusty loves him and he seems to have a good awareness of the strike zone at the MLB level so I bet he replaces Diaz since he's a free agent and really hasn't done much.
The Astros are in agreement with free agent Jose Abreu, a source confirms. @BNightengale was first.

Replacing our existing first baseman with...an aging Cuban first baseman who is in a career decline? Ionno man.
Looking at 2022 stats alone, Abreu over Yuli is a no brainer. The only thing Yuli had more of was strikeouts and stolen bases.Ferris Wheel Allstar said:career decline base on what?Head Ninja In Charge said:

Astros won 106 games getting a -0.9 fWar from Yuli Gurriel and now they’re replacing him with a guy coming off a 133 OPS+ and 3.9 fWar season lmao

My guess is it'd be up to Yuli if he wants to take that kinda role and the money that comes along with that role. He could certainly get more as a 1st baseman on the open market.MAS444 said:
I haven't read anything so maybe this is a dumb question... but any chance we keep Yuli as a utility IF/backup?

They weren't really upgrades, so Dusty was right in how he managed that playing time.
Verlander’s $43.33M average annual value in his deal with the Mets is exactly the same as Max Scherzer’s, tying the highest in major-league history, source says. Verlander is two years, $86.66M. Scherzer was three years, $130M.

Not for a guy who can't be counted on as your #1 starter in the playoffs. Somebody getting that kind of money needs to be an ace in the playoffs, not 1-7 or whatever Verlander is.MAS444 said:
Not worth it IMO. We'll see.
Pretty sure Verlander is 16-11 in the playoffs. You may be talking specific to the World Series, but who knows, maybe he got that monkey off his back this year with his first win.txags92 said:Not for a guy who can't be counted on as your #1 starter in the playoffs. Ok, fair enough, I was thinking World Series and said playoffs. But his last 3 playoff runs (2018, 2019, and 2022), his ERA is over 4. Not what you want for that kind of money.htxag09 said:Pretty sure Verlander is 16-11 in the playoffs. I agree he's not worth it, to the Astros. But for different reasons. We have pretty damn good depth at pitching and could use the money elsewhere.
No argument there.htxag09 said:
Again, Astros are in a unique position with depth and playoff experience they can say that. The vast majority of teams cannot and would take him in a heart beat.

Do we get to put an asterisk next to his record now too? Or is MLB just going to deny the factual scientific evidence that they used different balls in different situations?Red Pear Realty said:
So….the Yankees got to use special balls all season that gave them dingers. Neat. Must be nice to be Aaron Judge right now.

But what's wilder, imo, is *where* we found Goldilocks. Last year we had no discernable pattern. Within our sample this year, most Goldilocks balls show up in the 2022 postseason or regular season Yankees games. Almost every other baseball in every other location was dead. pic.twitter.com/l0Df0M65S0
