That's a great take and very accurate. I remember getting to the part of the game where it gives you a side task to start an outpost somewhere. In my brain I could only picture the Ryan Reynolds meme "But Why".

They definitely tried to make 'Fallout in Space' and it just didn't work all that well. I think they spent way too much time trying make their traditional story elements and dialogue trees work in a large space game... what they should have done was create a completely NEW game.

Starfield, at first, has a little bit of that sense of awe and wonder of the vastness of space. But that wears off way too fast and eventually your only reason to travel is to check the box of the current active quest. As you said, very little risk and very little reward to explore and so the game becomes very linear.

A quick comparison is a game like Elite: Dangerous. That game is way more repetitive than Starfield... there are no direct NPC interactions, no love interest for you to marry.... but people like me keep on jumping into the cockpit to do it over and over again because they made a kick ass space game!

You can die 1,000 different ways... you are all alone... and it's awesome!

Looks like good stuff here for Series X. And very good stuff if you have a 120 Hz VRR TV/Monitor!

They finally added a vehicle to use. How this wasn't in the original release is beyond me because it makes everything much more convenient

Still need many more different types of generated space stations, and a non repetitive way to get those powers. So boring going to the exact same temple and doing that mini game.

Defintely the main complaint of most people. I was really enjoying the game...but the magic really wore off the second I realized they were reusing space stations and settlements. Seems like they only have 6-10 total designs and 2 or 3 I see all the time. The thrill of exploration is lost.

What the heck were they working on for 5+ years.

1000+ unique planets to explore! (that all kinda look the same with the same POIs)

Reminds me of Dragon Age 2. After Origins I was super pumped for the sequel. It didn't take long to discover they cut corners everywhere, including dungeons/caves.

They'd plug a doorway and open another and boom a new dungeon was born

And the "plugs" were obvious because the color pallet didn't match, so they stuck out like a sore thumb.

So... did anyone purchase the DLC?

It's included in Game Pass. Downloaded but still need to finish the main quest.

Early reviews seem mixed. Apparently, it has less content than other Bethesda DLC's like Skyrim or Fallout 4. It all occurs on a single planet that is more hand-crafted than the procedural planets throughout the rest of the universe.

Honestly, I am not expecting to be blown away as the base game had fundamental design issues that no DLC is going to meaningfully change. Will check it out on Gamepass and enjoy the DLC for what it is.

Yeah... I decided to boot up the SeriesX and try jumping back into the game. After about an hour, I just realized I still have no desire to play it. I really wish they had made a game that I loved. I had this idea that I would be able to play out my own Firefly fantasy of being a smuggler prior the game releasing, and just realized there is no good mechanic like that.

I wish they were able to overhaul it the way CD Projekt Red did with Cyberpunk. I've beaten that game twice now, and always enjoy booting it up and starting a new character.

The same thing goes for FO4. I've booted that up many times to start new characters because I just enjoy exploring and dungeon diving for 15-20 hours on a character.

Hell, I would just like a mod that puts the artifacts you need to collect at the end of actual dungeons, so it feels more fun finding them. I wish you actually had to track them down so it felt like you were uncovering these locations and then had to fight to get them. I wish there was better itemization so I actually felt like I found fun rewards for exploration.

I did like the idea of the magazines as permanent buffs you can find when dungeoning, but the lack of interesting dungeons kind of makes that not as fun.

The biggest issue with Starfield, IMHO, is the same issue you always run into with Procedural Generation content development. Sure, it helps enable "more stuff", but very quickly all the stuff looks the same and you completely lose the wonder of exploration which has long been a hallmark of Bethesda franchises. I understand why they chose the PCG direction in an effort to make the game feel like you have a huge galaxy/universe to explore, but it seems pretty clear a better direction would have been a smaller set of hand crafted worlds, a la Destiny

Obviously Bethesda recognized that miscalculation which is why the DLC is entirely on one handcrafted world, rather than expanding the universe.

Starfield's biggest problem is that it's a game built on exploration but offers no reward or point to exploration.

And even when you get to the furthest reaches of space in the game the planet still has an "abandoned chemical processing facility" there. And 5 minutes after you land a group of space pirates land near you and take off again. So it's not unexplored. People have been there. People are still going there. Destroys the immersion.

Agreed.

Now, if they made you have to actually work for the ability to travel to the furthest reaches of the galaxy, and instead only had ruins for whoever created the artifacts, then that would be something interesting, but actually give us interesting ruins with rewards for finding them and exploring them.

But, no matter how they do that, the constant load screens and fast travels is just an eventual boring loop, for me. I literally start falling asleep.

Fool me once, shame on you...fool me twice?

This game is up there with one of the most disappointing I've ever purchased before.

I don't think I've even played it past 10 or so hours, I got bored so quickly.

I was even unemployed at the time of launch and k couldn't bring myself up to even boot it up and play for more than 30 minute chunks.

And the "temples" were absolutely ****ing ridiculous.

But it can be done. No Man's Sky (a developer with something like 50 employees) managed to utilize procedural generation in a far more impactful and convincing manner. Bethesda (a studio with I believe over 500 developers in total) took almost a decade of active development to release boring, repetitive slop even though they didn't have to focus on handcrafting the playable areas. That blows my mind.

I won't disagree that the game disappointed in some ways, but there is more than 10 hours of enjoyment in this game. Maybe it's just not your cup of tea.

Exploring planets, caves, outposts, abandoned space stations, etc. is typical Bethesda magic. The issue is the magic really starts to wear off once you see the planet foliage, outposts, etc. start repeating. But it takes a while to get to that point.

But a I do agree with the question of "What the heck were all of y'all working on for so long". So many things such as "build your own outpost" have virtually no point. There is so much fluff they should have thrown to the side to focus on what really made the game fun. If the game was a HUGE success they could have easily added some of this stuff later to grow the game.

Not sure if this is the Design Lead just cheerleading, or he is really out of touch, but...

I played it for 36 hours, last played Sept 21, so I played it for two weeks.

it was not good. A fraction what i have spent on other Bethesda titles.

My point was, until you deliver the game you promised, im certainly not giving you any more of my money. for "DLC".

Doesn't help that is is Xbox exclusive and not on PS5. I would give it a try if it was.

Dude is way out of touch

Quote:

"Any Bethesda developer who has been around since the horse armor days knows that by this point, if we understand one thing, it's DLC," he begins. "That's not to say we're on autopilot and don't think about it now. It means we still think about it and have probably thought about it more than any other studio since those early days. And I think the result of all that contemplating is we have a pretty good handle on how to plug new content into our huge games."
