BTW Health is mostly Medicaid. Yeah, there was a big bump from income security (CARES), housing, and education for 2020-1 and of course with all that extra debt, the interest payments lagged a year or so.

It's a drop in the bucket but the extra $100B in unreported spending bugs the heck out of me.

Me and my employer have paid about $500,000 into Social Security.

You bet your ass I'm entitled to a retirement income from that.

I think you can, if you have a leader that can explain it succinctly to the people and you have a media that is reasonably balanced. The media is going to demonize any R that tries to tackle the issue.

Unfortunately, many people don't understand how Social Security works. People today pay in to fund other people that are receiving benefits now. People don't pay in to fund their own future retirement incomes.

It's a government run pyramid scheme and those schemes never work out for whomever is last to buy in. The trick is, it WILL have to end at some point and we never know if we're the last to buy in or not. Until it stops.

Why I have other retirement plans going besides my pension. I know SS will not be around when I retire in 14 years.

Exactly, it has to be done

A thought occurred to me last week listening to Lyn Alden, who i think is transgender. I don't care either way but assuming so.... She gets it and can explain it all very well. Im not suggesting she run for potus or congress but perhaps somewhat of an Elon role the left wouldn't dare attack

Do you know what happens to the economy if you balance the budget in an aggressive manner?

No, they removed the tax stamp, but kept the registration. They are about to be stupidly easy to get at a place like SilencerShop. I think the $200 less cost will encourage use, then allowing g GOA to sue since there is no tax but just a registry.

You are not. It is a tax that you and your employer paid and the money has been spent.

Pay for your own retirement and stop relying on the government taxing others to pay for you.

Nope. They'll be harder, because more people will rush to buy them, but still have to fill out the background check and wait for it to be approved. Processing times will go though the roof.

A pyramid scheme that makes Bernie Madoff look like a Saint by comparison.

It was set up as a wealth transfer vehicle disguised by FDR as a retirement savings plan and made even worse over the years by both parties but especially the Dems.

The money you have put in has been spent on people in retirement as soon as you put it in. It isn't your money. If it still exists the money you will use in retirement will be supported by our kids' taxes.

How much in income, sales, property, tariffs, and other governement taxes have you paid and what do you think that entitles you and the rest of us to? Given the deficits we have been running despite current collections, I can you assure you it will be less coming to us than what has been given to people over the last number of decades because we can't afford what we are spending.

The conclusion is to cut entitlements. Nowhere in the constitution are they mandated. In fact the current interactions are products of the last 100 years with most from the past 65 years.

Gut them and then take stock of where we are with the budget and only then can we discuss tax increases on those already almost entirely footing the bill.

The gold is the area where entitlement spending is located. Do you see the issue?

Tens of millions of people who have very little saved are depending on social security. I think it's a terribly run waste of money that shouldn't exist, but "gut it!" is not a serious proposal. The social upheaval would be humongous.

I don't think there's a good answer. An annual tax increase amounting to 6-7% of gdp (2 trillion) would crush growth, so that's not on the table, but I think that tax increases have to be part of the solution. I DO think we should do them across the board because everybody needs to feel the pain of our decades of irresponsibility. The rich should not pick up the tab for everybody.

But I don't see how we fix two trillion dollar deficits without a tax increase, though I think we should do it across the board because everybody needs to feel the pain of our decades of irresponsibility.

Social security + Medicare = ~$3T or about 10% of the economy and you think it won't be ruinous if we gut it overnight?

I would love to see us phase it out over 10+ years (Maybe privatize it), but the quick kill is not a realistic proposal.

Yup - people are obsessed with the status quo never changing nor ending. When it finally does, it never is as bad as originally perceived or completely underestimate the resourcefulness of human beings. This is a lesson that most idiots never learn.

At this point eff it, everyone has to take some of the burden of these cuts, young, old, rich, poor. Go look at every other thread on here about cuts that affect the poor or young, it's downright gleeful, but when it comes to boomers, " oh no, they are on a fixed income," why are we rewarding boomer irresponsibility on the backs of the rest of America's future. Everyone ran up the credit card everyone needs to shoulder the burden.
And I'm not even saying get rid of Medicare or SS for those in retirement or near retirement but reduction in benefits has to be on the table and a phasing out for the younger generation.
These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.-Thomas Paine

We temporarily shut down chunks of our economy while the government simultaneously showered people with roughly offsetting amounts of money (this was all a terrible idea BTW). How is that at all similar to telling 10+ million boomers with crappy retirement savings that the trillions per year that they were depending on are no longer coming, good luck with the next 10-20 years?

Whatever point you're trying to make isn't hitting home.

Trump can't fix everything in DC in six months.

The budget is a symptom, not the problem in DC. We were just invaded by 20 million foreigners. We have to clean up that mess and fix corruption in DC and then the budget will take care of itself.
