Agreed, Farva, I'm glad I taped it so I can watch that part. Loved Michael telling Toby to stick the letter opener in his skull.

Quality episode. And yet, so bizarre on so many levels: the trip to the beet farm, Andy/Angela, and Michael trying to run away and jump a train.

The good news is that it, based on the last scene, it appears that Dwight is back to his old self.

Three absolutely epic lines/exchanges tonight:
quote:
Well, nobody called on you, ever. So whomever's name is Toby, go jab a letter opener into your skull.

quote:
Ryan: "You can't have another job if it's going affect your work here."

Michael: "It's not."

Ryan: "It already did."

Michael: "Well, honestly, it's unlikely that I was going to figure this out anyway."

And last, but not least:
quote:
I DECLARE BANKRUPTCY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I loved the exchange between Darrell and Kelly..."You've got to access your less crazy side!"...and the part about "I get so excited when I see that little man come in the door"

I just went back and re-watched the whoever/whomever bit. That was quality stuff, especially since it got everyone in the room involved.

Funniest parts were Creed saying, "Michael is right, it's a made up word used to trick students' and Kelly interjecting out of the blue, "Ryan used me as an object."

I didn't catch this the first time, but when Oscar said, "it's obviously a real word, I just don't know when to use it correctly", Michael looked at the camera and said, "not a native speaker."

I agree, that was good stuff. I especially enjoyed the end of it when she said, "Darryl Philbin is the most complicated man I've ever met. I mean, who says exactly what they're thinking. What kind of game is that?"

One of the most eclectic episodes of all 4 seasons. Mose (sp?) freaking kills me in ever bit he's in. The Norman Bates characterization of Dwight was terrific. Mose running alongside the car had me ROLLING.

But I agree with the others... the literal declaration of bankruptcy to the group was one of the greatest lines in the show's history.

The declare bankruptcy bit would have been funnier if they had not have used it in every single promo this week.

Dogs make good friends, but if you’re looking for a really dependable pal, you’ve got to get yourself a spoon. Spoons never run away, they never rat you out, they come in handy when all you’ve got is soup, and, best of all, they turn into a weapon during a bar fight. Sure they’re not much when it comes to talking, but who wants a blabbermouth for a friend anyway? I’ll take a spoon over a Chatty Carl any day of the week.

Glad I missed all of them! I agree, had I seen that line in the promos it would have been less effective.

Mose running alongside the car was hilarious. And I lost it when Michael was sitting on the boxcar singing "Runaway Train".

re: Toby - is there a root to Michael's hatred of Toby? Don't know if there was a scene from an old episode i missed or just don't remember, or if it is just another irrational thing Michael does.

michael has always hated toby... I don't remember any particular episode where it started... I think he's just always disliked the HR/rules type role person.

Michael hates Toby because he's the HR rep. Toby is always keeping Michael from doing his stupid antics. Michael sees it as ruining all the fun but he's really keeping Dunder Mifflin from constantly being sued.

I'm trying to remember exactly what was the first point when Michael expressed his disdain for Toby. I think it would have been the "Sexual Harassment" episode in Season 1 when Toby told Michael that he needed to curtail his inappropriate jokes and email forwards. That's when Michael explained to the camera that, "Toby works for HR and is technically a part of Corporate, so he's really not part of our family. He's also divorced, so he's really not a part of his family, either."

Their most most classic exchange, though, was in the Season 2 finale, "Casino Night", when Michael told everyone that the funds would be donated to the Boy Scouts and an actual group of Boy Scouts would be there to receive the check at the end of the night. My roommate and I love to spout this exchange back and forth at each other. This scene is absolutely priceless, thanks to the bitter disdain in Michael's voice and the blank look on Toby's face:

quote:
Toby: Actually, I didn't think it was appropriate since there's going to be alcohol...and gambling...and it's going to be in our dangerous warehouse...and it's a school night...and Hooters is catering...and...is that enough or do you want me to keep going?

Michael: Why are you the way that you are? Honestly. Every time I try to do something fun or exciting you make it...not that way. I hate...so much...about the things that you choose to be.

yeah, i figured it was partly due to Toby being in HR, and therefore killing all of Michael's "fun". Just wasn't sure if there was an incident that really started it.

Sexual Harassment was Season 2 (second episode). The first time it occurs in in The Alliance in Season 1.

Michael is struggling to find something funny to write on Meredith's Birthday card when Toby comes by to sign it. Michael cordially invites him in his office, but when Toby writes something funnier than Michael was thinking of, Michael gets mad, makes Toby cross it out, and kicks him out of his office.

Ever since then it has been downhill, partly because of this, but mainly because Michael has no authority over Toby.

I can't believe no one is talking about Michael's extra job. I absolutely lost it when he called and Stanley recognized his voice and went off.

It was also pretty funny when the manager called a meeting and Michael disrupted it.

1. Dial the number
2. Follow the script
3. Make the sale

(or something like that)

Ahh yes, you are correct.

Something else that happened in Season 1, in the "Diversity Day" episode: Toby walks in to the conference room for Michael's "diversity" seminar and says, "you're not going to have us sit in the floor Indian-style, are you?" Everyone laughs, but Michael says, "no, this is a welcoming place, and that was inappropriate, so get out, just get the hell out."

Like you said, it's partially due to a personality conflict, and partially due to the fact that Michael has no control over Toby. I loved it last season when Toby said he needed to know, as the HR rep, if there was a relationship between Michael and Jan, and Michael's response was, 'oh you'd like all the juicy details wouldn't you, you skeevy little perv?"

Watching it again this afternoon I burst out laughing at Kevin's very obscure reference of "Women be shopping" from Chapelle's character in the Nutty Professor as Kevin tries to get a fist bump from Stanley, who ignores him.

There were some great lines, but I thought this episode had too much relationship stuff. Michael & Jan, PB&J, and Dwight & the tight ass Christian Chick. It's episodes like this that make me worry this show might be about to jump the shark.

I caught that too, but couldn't remember what it was from. That is hilarious.
