No, that was added in. Or more of, extrapolated (or back...polated...whatever). She had mentioned before that she killed off some of her kids that were Robert's via poisoning herself while pregnant so the assumption is that this is just a modified story of that. She killed the kid, but is modifying the story to elicit sympathy from Catelyn.

She also mentions to Ned later that she got off on eating Robert's knuckle children.

Hopefully this isnt viewed as a spoiler....but season 3/book3 stuff.

I am doing a re-read to brush up before the next book, and am in the middle of A Storm of Swords. I just finished the story about the Knight of the Laughing Tree. To me this isn't really a memorable part of the story, certainly not on my original reading, but every time I get to it on a re-read, it just strikes me as probably one of the best chapters of the entire series. It really shows in a very poignant and almost sad way, one of the critical turning points of the realm, and almost like a vision of happier times. I really hope they manage to bring that to the big screen and pull it off.

So what's everyone's opinion on the paternity of Jon Snow? Is he really Ned Stark's son after all, or was Ned covering for his sister?

i'm an R+L=J believer

How long do you want to ignore this user?
IMO, Jon Snow is obviously R+L. I've also lately become a believer in Lyanna Stark = KotLT.
Elliot P. Campbell
How long do you want to ignore this user?
i always kinda thought that was a given

while we're bringing up book theories...who else here thinks Coldhands = Benjen?

While we are really sticking it to the whiners who have only read book 1, who is Azor Ahai reborn?
Elliot P. Campbell
How long do you want to ignore this user?
the obvious answer is jon. or maybe dany.

ah hell it's probably rickon.

Same Here. But I am worried that GRRM will change it since its such a wide spread theory.

Assuming that TPWWP is basically the same as Azor Ahai, I have to think that its Jon. The Song of Ice and Fire part of the PWWP theory fits Jon and R+L.

The two characters that most fit the Azor Ahai version of the prophecy to me so far are Davos (well assuming he isnt really dead) and Jaime Lannister.
Elliot P. Campbell
How long do you want to ignore this user?
i always assumed they were the same. i've never heard the Davos theory though. makes sense i guess
JJxvi

Davos has been reborn from smoke and salt.

Assuming that Azor Ahai is going to have to make some sort of similar sword tempering ritual as the original its not hard for me to see where Jaime Lannister's story is taking him...

Im suprised Howland Reed hasnt showed up yet but he is going to be the critical personality in this whole R+L=J deal.
Elliot P. Campbell
How long do you want to ignore this user?
who would davos' sacrifice be? i guess it could be his wife but martin's given us no real reason to care about her so the emotional impact would be kinda lost

Stannis

i think Stannis is gonna be the next Night King/Great Other. cause that'd be cool.

I think that all signs point to R+L=J too, and I'm also worried that Martin will change it because its such a widely discussed theory. This is not an author who has a tremendous amount of regard for his fans in general, and I can see it bothering him that a bunch of Bush-voters figured it out.

Trouble is, if R+L=J turns out to be wrong, there needs to be something really amazing in its place.

Got a quick question. The Red Wedding was at the end of Storm of Swords right?

I was just thinking about zombie Catelyn earlier today and wondering how they were going to do that in the show. That and the Red Wedding, plus the Whispering Woods, would be awesome scenes, but they're still a few seasons off I think (assuming they make it that far).
JJxvi
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Whispering Wood should be the season finale of season 1. Ned gets executed in the episode 9, which is titled Baelor. Episode 10 is called Fire and Blood, which I'm guessing tells the story of Wights attacking catle black, the birth of the dragons and death of Drogo, and the march of Robb Stark to Riverrun.

The Red Wedding is at the end of A Storm of Swords, yes.

it seems like all that happens a lot sooner. They might have Ned executed at the beginning of episode 9. They will need to make the deal with the Frey's at the crossing as well, and since they do have Tywin Lannister and Walder Frey etc cast, I assume we are going to see the haggling with the Freys and the battle with tyrion at the Green Fork, etc. Ep 10 might be a 2 hour season finale, maybe?
Elliot P. Campbell
How long do you want to ignore this user?
well if episode nine has ned dying, then episode 10 will need...let's see...

-jon's attempt to escape and subsequent conversation with mormont
-king in the north (and whispering wood? or do i have the timeline off there)
-all the crap with mirri maz durr, drogo's pyre, and the birth of the dragons
-arya and yoren setting off
-sansa starting to hate joffrey
-tyrion being named Hand

that's a lot of really important stuff that i hope they don't try to shove in 55-60 minutes

Isn't Viserys' 'crowning' in there somewhere? Another moment I'm awaiting eagerly.

Though that may be in Clash of Kings. My timeline is so screwed up with everything running together.
Elliot P. Campbell
How long do you want to ignore this user?
no it's in GoT but it's well before ned dies. i think episode 6 is called "A Golden Crown"

Ep 8 "The Pointy End" is written by GRRM so I figured that was the episode ned meets his fate.
Red Five
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm not currently watching the series, but I would assume "The Pointy End" would be a reference to Arya learning to sword fight under the teacher hired by Ned.
Elliot P. Campbell
How long do you want to ignore this user?
it's probably when ser meryn trant kills syrio and arya kills the stable boy as she's escaping. i'm pretty sure she first meets with syrio within the next couple of episodes, it's fairly early in the book
Red Five
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Makes sense.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
sorry wasn't trying to put you in your place or anything. i re-read the first book right before the series started so i could prepare
Red Five
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I didn't read it that way at all. Since I'm not watching the show I don't have a feel for the pacing of the episodes or how many there will be.
cainer
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yea I figured it would be the very end of that episode after Arya kills the boy and slums it up in Flea Bottom. It could also be the very beginning of the next but the way its going they like dramatic endings to their episodes.
JJxvi
How long do you want to ignore this user?
They might end that episode with Joffrey giving the order to execute and then leave whether it will happen as a cliffhanger...although that miught be foolish with so many out there already knowing what will happen.
Elliot P. Campbell
How long do you want to ignore this user?
i'd be really disappointed if they did that. the whole thing about that scene is that you think ned's gonna go on to live at the Wall and be fine. then joff says the words, and the reader is so confused that as the sword falls you can still barely believe it's happening. if they broke it up the momentum there would die.
jenn96
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Uni, exactly. It's not a cliffhanger if they show the sword descending and then cut away til next week because everyone watching (virgins) will assume Ned is going to be okay after all and join the Night's watch. It's Ned's actual death that is the shock, as the viewer will realize that so many of their assumptions - about the show, the characters and the plot - are now blown out of the water. They would be insane to split that revelation into two scenes.

Hrm...just read this part in the book. I think it's around page 250 or so.

They get to King's Landing, Ned does some Hand stuff, then the tourney is announced, and in a completely tangential scene Arya will have her outburst, go running off, and Ned goes up to talk to her in her room, finds Needle, and then Arya starts her 'dancing lessons'. So it could potentially be as early as next episode, but likely within the next two or three at the most.
