For some reason I missed this show and was able to watch Season 1 over the last two days. All I can say is I hope the writers can develop the story enough to last a long long time. I cannot wait for Season 2 and I am pretty bummed I'll have to start waiting a week for the next show...

I'm wondering if HBO will commit to this for a full seven books, or seven seasons???

so as an unfortunate individual who knew about the red wedding coming in SoS... it was interesting to see that the last two sentences of Arya's 2 chapters before the Red Weddingthe Hound says "I just want to get to that bloody wedding." and "I want to get you to your bloody brother."

Not sure if GRRM meant to do that, but if so well done sir.

As much as I hate Catelyn, I hate Brienne 11ty times more. At least with Catelyn you got politics moving forward, Brienne is just playing catch-up trying to find Sansa/Arya.

Brienne just seems like a waste of time...maybe its because Im 3/4's done with FfC. But other than telling us there are bandits and sparrows in Westeros as well as the Hound is truly dead, there is nothing the reader has learned from the first 6 of her 8 chapters in book 4.

Im having a problem with Petyr's plan. He is expecting Robert Arryn to die, or he will have his hand in the death. The moment Robert dies, Petyr ceases being Lord Protector, he returns to being just Lord of Harrenhal. I dont see how this helps him.

Then again this is all folly once Bran and Rickon resurface.

Whether he lives at the Quiet Isles or not is not important. He is no longer a player, he might as well be dead if he is alive.

From the tone of the monks, they would not take up arms for the two orders of the faith either. So I highly doubt Sandor would re-enter the game.

Maybe, maybe not. But that's a pretty big wildcard sitting out there, especially considering how close Sansa is to the Quiet Isle. I have a feeling we'll see him again.

I think that there will be a face off between Sandor (anti-hero) and Clegane (evil). It's been "in the script" since the first book.

Ok Im a few chapters into aDwD, so forgive the lack of being caught up.

So Im trying to keep track of the unresolved mysteries:

1. What happened to Benjen?
2a. Who had John Arryn killed? (resolved)
2b. What was Pycelles role? (resolved)
3. Is Syrio really dead?
4. Where is Nymeria? Will she ever be reunited with Arya?
5. Who is Jon Snow's mother and what is that importance?
6. Who is Coldhands? Why would a dead monster/ranger be helping them?
7. Will Arya ever be able to sleep without having to recite her list?
8. Who sent the knifeman for Bran? (resolved)
9. Is Loras still alive?
10. Is R'hollor a false god (as M.Aemon suggests)?
11. What is Illyrio/Varys' plans?

Can add:

Who is azor ahai?
Is sandor dead?
Who is the newest member of the kingsguard?
Who is valonquar?

do you want us to answer those questions??

Answering if its resolved or not would suffice.


Hell you dont know the truth about Jon Arryn until book 4.

I have finally finished the first 4 books, and am now reading ADWD. I didn't dare click on this thread until I had read the first 4 books. Interesting stuff in here...

Any word on when The Winds of Winter will be published? Or even how the writing is going?

GRRM mentioned repeatedly that he wasn't planning to start writing on it at all until 2012, so I doubt any new writing has been done. There are about 100 pages that were cut from ADWD that are done though - see the new sample chapter on his blog.

I seriously doubt it will be published before 2016-2017. The guy just doesn't much like writing, he has a lot of side projects that he's interested in, he travels a lot, and he's now accomplished anything he could have ever dreamed of as a writer, both in terms of money and critical recognition. He's enjoying himself and I can't blame him - but I see no evidence in his blog and interviews that he's
in any hurry to finish the series. So 4-5 years seems very realistic to me. Hope I'm wrong.

You can remove #3 from your list. Syrio is dead, at least as far as GRRM has indicated.

If the season breakdowns above were correct. Here is what they will look like with years attached:

This means he needs to release WoW sooner than 2016. Or if he is smart/dumb he would release it after the 6th season finale. Further it means he needs to have A Dream of Spring done extremely quickly.

Actors and actresses will not wait around 3 years longer between 5/6 or 6/7.

I think that these books come more quickly than the last two. He was knocking them out every two years prior to AFFC and ADWD. That said, I'm not holding my breath.

Im started reading the series a couple of months ago...and still catching up. The purpose of that post is just to keep track of all the mysteries that have been posed.

Take the Varys/Illyrio plot. In GoTs, Arya is in the dungeons with the dragon skulls. She didnt see the two men talking, but the TV show gladly surrendered their identities. Further Varys and Baelish had a small parley prior to a small council meeting in the show, where Baelish reinforces the fact that Varys is conspiring with "a certain foreign diplomat."

As far as I know, Varys is still working with Illyrio, he gave him Tyrion. Varys must have an ace-in-the-hole. And here's why. When Robert attended a council meeting he wanted Dany dead; notice Varys did not object. This leads me to believe, he doesnt have all his eggs in one basket. But as Ser Barristan said when explaining to Dany, "too many Dragons are worse than too few." So if Varys knows of another Targaryen, ******* or pureblood, or even a "last Valaryan" he may have to decide which one wins the crown. (Hell Varys probably had no intent on seeing Viserys on the Iron Throne, too much of his father in him.)

Looking at Jon Snow. There are reasons for and against the R+L idea.

Lets assume its true. In ADWD Davos' first chapter, the dude that has him caught said told the story of how Ned knocked up a woman on his way before the war. (This story was accepted to the area before the war was over and before Ned could have known of a child between R and L. And he certainly couldnt have killed the child. Compound that with a mysterious Ned bast. And you are left with many questions.

Here's some reasons to support it:

Jon was taken into Catelyn/Ned's home because he is a Targaryen/Stark and not treated like a bast. And Ned couldnt dishonor his family and realm to keep his sisters kid (a legitimate child) raised by a merchant. Honor wouldnt allow a bast to live under the same roof as a legit wife, nor being raised along side legit kids.

Ned has to keep Snow's ID a secret from EVERYONE. Catelyn, Jon, King Robert, EVERYONE. Book one proved how Ned has no talent for secrets or lying. Perhaps he keeps his honor pristine so no questions his claim on Jon Snow. However if there is a bast with Wylla, how does he not protect or watch him/her?

If Snow is a Targaryen/Stark, he has king's blood in him. Extremely useful to Stannis. Extremely detrimental to Dany and Varys. The idea that the realm can be turned upside down by a dullard who dies in the first book kinda makes me laugh/cry.

Ned had zero guile and he was unashamed about it. Now Im to believe that he has deceived everyone (including his wife) for 16 years to protect Lyanna's son?

If its true good for him. It would be really cool to see a guy who is dead in the first book really shatter many plans.

And if its true think of the conversation Ned had with Baelish after Robert dies. "Joffrey and Tommen are Lannisters. I must give it to Stannis" Why not reveal you have a Targaryen heir? Well he has taken the black.

He'd (little finger) also have him (snow) killed, little finger has nothing to gain by raising jon snow to the throne; and he is all about what is best for him. Killing you know who so easily, and it is obivious he feels that he can stay protected where he is now (after ADWD) until the time is right to strike. His desires are to be king himself, so he'll wait till kingslanding is weak from more war or the entire land is at war again and I believe he'll try to return under the guile of peace and stewardship and then he will try to usurp the throne.

Also, they'd have to somehow prove that snow is stark and targaryan. He has no characterisitics that stick out (purple eyes or blonde hair), at least that we have been made aware of at this time, that would lead us to believe he isn't ned's basterd. Only speculation.

Another problem with R+L. No one but Ned knew. How the hell would GRRM reveal it? A god tells someone in a fire or a dream? Pa-lease.

Reed was at the battle at the Tower of Joy. Good point there. And he still has yet to be introduced as a character in the present (we only see him in Ned's flashback). I'm sure Martin is holding back Reed for a reason. Eventually, Reed will have to come out and tell Jon the truth.
