wow... memories!

I don't know a grenade story...but i do have some really good ones.

I was a sales rep in training back in the early 90's, so i got to hang with Bob and company at the old Houstonian. Can't believe he's still alive.. he's gotta be old now.. or at least even older looking than he was.

Let me start by saying that it was a great place for a sales rep to get kick started. Pretty much all the reps that quit in the mid 90's rose quickly to the top of the companies that they went to... and I'm talking big name software/hardware companies.

I'll just ramble a few stories here for ya.

- One of the VP's (can't remember which one) made Dan Agan cry at a 'running' meeting at the Houstonian. Quite an uncomfortable morning and I never looked at Dan the same again. Big friggin baby!

- One of the sales interns got into a tiff with a dealer at a software install in NC. The dealer told them that they weren't leaving because the software was not complete, and this guy said that they were. He actually challenged the dealer to go outside and duke it out. Dealer didn't fight because the sales rep was about 6'6. We all thought that the sales rep was going to be fired on Monday morning. Instead, Brockman absolutely loved the story. It was the most amazing thing.

- If you were a dealer, you could buy everything except the controllers from a sales rep. You had to contact a separate company (wink wink) out of the Cayman Islands to purchase them. The sales reps didn't get paid on them.. but a few years ago, quite a few reps sued the company and won back commissions.

- During the Ford dealer upgrades, reps made crappy money if they sold a 5 year deal. They made better money if they sold a 7 year deal... and they made the best money if they sold a 10 year deal. Some reps even did 10 on top of 10...locking a dealer up for over 20 years. I found this to be very unethical and is one of the reasons why I left the company. But man..some reps made some incredible money doing this crap.

- The first ever girl in the one year sales training program had to quit. One of the enterprising sales reps in the field found pictures of her posing in a college playboy edition and faxed them into the home office. It made for quite a story.

- One of the VP's wives died on a scuba trip way back in the 80's...therefore Bob outlawed scuba diving for the insurance progam. (sounds like the firm...right?) What did I do on a sales incentive trip to Cancun one year? I went scuba diving.. heh!

- One sales rep at a Christmas party drove back to his hotel in a car that wasn't his. He had jumped in a car at the valet, but didn't realize his mistake till the next morning.

- Absolutely NONE of the VP's impressed me. Bob was very good at getting YES men to work around him. He liked to be worshiped at his morning exercise events.

I'll come back later and post some more goodies.

I went there interviewing for a IT job that I was barely qualified for, the 1st interview they told me that they needed help in sales, and would I be willing to work in that department. I said: "no". They kept me there for 4 effing hours trying to persuade me to at least think about "joining the team". That place is durty.

I applied to work there, but never got a job. I told them I sometimes smoked cigars...NEVER SAY THAT TO AN EMPLOYER!

Never got that job, hated them ever since for no rational reason.

I worked there. I've heard the stories, and heard them while I was there, but very rarely saw anything that wouldn't make me want to work there. If you're looking for an easy part time job that pays better than most things in B/CS, then apply there.

Most departments were relaxed - yes they measured output, and you had to sign out (gasp!) for lunch, but whatever problems existed in the UCS days, I didn't see when working for ReyRey. It's air-conditioned, you're working with college kids in an environment where, even while you're working, you get to shoot the **** and get paid for it. It's a job, so naturally you're expected to do some work, but it pays better than almost anything on campus, and at least my department was incredibly flexible on scheduling.

I worked at Sourcenet in the same building at the time, and took the same aptitude test. Sounds like pretty much the same management organization too.

I left this place about 2 months ago. Thank God!!

I still remember my punch in code... 36616680.

Good riddance! I received a 40% pay raise to do exactly what I did at ReyRey for another industry.

For those of you interested in what's been going on since the UCS/R&R "merger"...

http://reynoldsinformation.blogspot.com/

This is written from the perspective of a current Dayton (old R&R) employee but it gives an interesting insight into what Bob is doing to R&R. Also, I sent this blog to a couple former co-workers that are still in the Houston office and they were clueless to all the issues in Dayton. They had no idea people were being laid off.

I worked there from 2002-2004 while at A&M. I loved it, met alot of good friends there.....did a lot of partying w/them through those years. Bosses were cool and laid back, no one ever got on your case much....even partied with them a few times.

The best was when they would have the monthly awards meeting down in the cafeteria. They would have a keg, we would just post up next to it through the whole meeting, after the meeting, until it was gone. Then we would all head out to Northgate for more crazyness.

My neighbor worked there. He met a girl there and yes, sheet in his teepee. Well she turned out to be abusive. Thats the only story I have of UCS. I actually worked across the street from them.
