Never worked there, and thanks to this thread, I never will.

I wear 10 year old faded out jeans, Hawaiian shirts, and flip flops to my office, anytime I want.

Other than that though, the small, but profitable and publicly held tech company in austin's corporate beauracracy does suck just as much as any other place. Performance plans are the norm as companies look to hold salaries down during lean economic years. To those of you that are not concerned about getting another job if you get 'downsized', your odds of going to another company at the same salary that you were holding at your previous job are less than 1 in 4.

I just quit a few weeks ago and I now have a graduate assistantship where I can wear shorts, a t-shirt, and flip-flops, check my email, talk on IM, and set my own hours. It's nice to wake up and actually look forward to going to work.

I worked for UCS less than a year before having enough and leaving without having another job lined up. Thanks to their good ol' mainframe system I ran a few reports and found some files with some interesting things in them before I left:

• Between 1/1/00 and 9/30/02 2654 employees were terminated ("*" of death, remember?). 354 of those were part-timers and the other 2300 were full-timers. That means that during that time frame of roughly 720 business days, UCS lost 3.686 employees per day! On my elevator ride up to sign the papers on my last day, I asked my "escort" how many times a day she did this and she just gave me a knowing smile and said nothing.
• Also, some managers left salary and review-related documents on the public drives of their computers. I found instructions on how supervisors were to fill out review sheets, and even completed excel sheets where the amount of overtime paid to an employee, educational reimbursement paid, and dollars of medical claims were taken into account when deciding whether or not to give a raise. I don't think any of that is illegal, and even if "all the other companies do it", it still stinks. I still have all these files. I showed them to my manager the day I quit and told him what I thought of everything. According to a friend who still works there, the files were off the networks within twenty minutes.

I think some of the "UCS elite" read this forum. The last time I was in College Station, I made a special guest appearance at the monthly birthday party as a guest of one of my old coworkers. Needless to say, I got an evil eye and some allurements to my previous UCS rants on here.

I love it when this thread comes back. A year ago I was in the middle of my 3.5 week tenure at UCS.

hahhaa this thread is great! i can't believe it is 8 pages long/8 months old and we still haven't heard the dang grenade story!

i've been at UCS for about 7 months now and damn, this place sucks. but I'll wait till next month when I quit to talk further.

i'm trying to interview for another job right now, but I've only got one "unexcused" sick day left! oh no! anyone know of a doctor who will forge me a sick pass so i can go back to work?

I too was one of the first workers in the CS location. CRT bench. Worst 3.5 months ever.

Do they still "encourage" all the supervisors to eat in that crappy cafeteria? I'll never forget reading that e-mail from BB that said something to the effect of "if you're not eating in the cafeteria every day, you're not supporting the company."

The turnover at that place was unreal. There were 8 other peeps hired in the same month I was. When I quit 2 years later, I was the last one left.

I interviewed with them 5 or so years ago. It was the most bizarre experience ever. I ran into an X that worked there on my way into the 2nd interview (testing part)....and he basically said, "run away". I should have listened.
I was interviewing for an administrative type position. The test they gave me was all about electricity (swear to God). I walked out in the middle of the test and respectfully told them I wasn't interested.

yep, everyone, especially management, is encouraged to eat in the cafeteria. but i swear the food sucks so bad...i don't know what it is but I can't stomach it. maybe if they served beer during lunch...

Ha. They did the same thing to me. Before I took the test, I told them I knew nothing about electricity, but the person giving the test insisted I take it anyway. After she graded it, she seemed surprise that I did bad. They hired me for the position anyway.

Yep, the electricity thing really threw me off. I got to the third question on Kilowatts.. and got the hell outta there! :-)

I worked there for about 1-1/2 years during '98 and '99 just before they moved to their new building. Anyone else from that era? I worked on the PC Bench team.

Just came across this thread the other day. Brings back lots of memories. I worked in the Houston office from 4/86 - 12/90. Pilgrim82, I'll bet I know you since we worked there at the same time. I started out in the Tech Services group doing conversions but ended up as part of the Software Installation group just before I busted out of the joint.

I think somebody posted the grenade story a while back and then edited it out.

I am almost positive I remember reading it.

My guess is UCS has infiltrated TexAgs and has people working as moderators. Whenever they see the grenade story posted, they immediately delete it and ban the user, and the user's family.

I also know the grenade story, unfortunately though I've been sworn to an oath of secrecy. Sorry guys.

Man Outlawag you really have it rough. Goofing off on the Internet all day, and working 7:59 minutes everyday. Did you also know that your boss reads this board? He is the one that told me the grenade story and we go through this thread and we know pretty much who everyone is, including you. So just so you know, I know for a fact he knows who you are.
