i worked iis for quite a while when i was in school sometime back in 98 i think it was. i felt like part of the gestapo, busting people surfing monster.com/resume builder sites/etc. we all hated being 'those guys.' i remember when my pay went up purely because people had quit working there due to mcdonalds raising their minimum pay to more than what we got. talk about sweatshop tactics.

the one good thing is when our mgr decided to start rotations through each dept to catch probelms as they happened. there was a great set of cubes that noone inhabited and was perfect for bsing with the cleaning crew or taking a nap. rentsys had some cool kids that i could sneak off to hang in their offices for quite a bit of the day, until i got in a bloody argument with their 'boss,' whatever his name was...

i did have some fun times wrestling guys in my dept to get the isers from recruiting, though. i love you ladies!

ucs is the spawn of satan, and bob is an idiot. slave labor exists in bcs, and it is ucs. fear the new reich. we must resist.

Is it a better or worse place to work than Vandelay Industries?

How long do you want to ignore this user?
UCS is a much worse place to work than Vandelay Industries, however Krueger Industrial Smoothing is worse than UCS.

Of course Rick Barr Properties and PlayNow! Toys are fantastic companies.

I really don't have the time to tell all the good stories, but let me tell you about one person. This "man's" name is Bill and he is a manager in CPG. You can recognize him by the 70's gay porno mustache. He became my "boss" and I didn't talk to him face-to-face for a year and a half. He never came by and introduced himself. I introduced myself at the Xmas party. I didn't see him again for 6 months. I talked to him 2 times face-to-face in 2 years. This guy ran access reports on our dept. all the time. I was told that I would be fired if I was one minute late, no matter what the excuse. Whenever the VP's would be out of town, he would leave the office for hours at a time, be late to work and leave early. He is the biggest hypocrit I have ever seen. I was finally let go, I mean fired, because they were making cut backs and I was the one with the least senority that did not have a wife and kid. I was told that!!! I was told that employees that have families are more important than one's that don't. It was Bill's decision, but he didn't have the guts to tell me to my face. He left the office when my supervisor told me. I'm not bitter because it was the best thing that ever happened to me. I would absolutely hate to one day look up and I'm getting a 10 year pin from Bob. I still wanna kick Bill's butt for the things he used to do to me and my dept. Maybe one day I'll tell more stories, but for now this will do. FREE AT LAST, FREE AT LAST, GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY I'M FREE AT LAST AND LOVING IT!!!

Is there any way we could plant a TexAgs mole at UCS and semi-control his/her actions? The fun would be endless.

It would probably be easier for Mossad to plant a mole in the PLO.

I made out with my supervisors girlfriend on the dance floor of the christmas party while he was off getting a beer.

And just had a verbal warning for drinking a 12 pack of beer in my truck on my lunch break.

I was on the Keyboard team at the old office by Sidepockets. I think I started in the Spring of 1996 and stayed around till the Fall of 1998. I interviewed for one of their full time Tech Support positions right before I left, and when I heard their offer, I laughed. I told them NO, and I actually stayed working part time until I got an offer from another company for almost DOUBLE what they offered about 2 weeks later. Is Dennis still there? He actually was a cool supervisor. I was the best troubleshooter on the team, and when I needed a day off or to trade a shift, he let me work by my rules. If you were good at what you did there, it wasn't that bad.

I worked there in the Spring of 2000 on the printer bench. Now I know how all those poor saps that work for the Nike sweatshops feel. I was so bored one day that I carved my initials (and other doodlings) into the that rubber mat that was on the bench. Needless to say I was in a bit of trouble...

How long do you want to ignore this user?
tx4guns,

You weren't the best on that bench- I was!! I wish I would have turned down their crappy offer when I had the chance- but I stuck around for another couple of years fulltime. Actually, once they realized I was going to be good, they gave me a pretty good raise right off the bat- so that was nice. If you stay there long enough you get decent perks- but it's tough to stick it out when your friends are making almost double to start somewhere else.

Anyway, last I saw Dennis was still there but he's in a different department.

So I'm interviewing for a position in Houston as a business consultant with travel of about 2 weeks a month to "remote locations" that don't have a local person.

What should I know? I mean details or tangible info, not the basic "Run Away!" stuff.

What should I expect in the line of salary and training? What is the 3 month training program? What tests will I have to take before the interview?
ORAggieFan
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Tests before the interview are competency and moral tests. Those are easy.

After an interview, if they like you, they will have an outside company ask you about your background. I believe some of these questions are illegal, but don't know all Texas law.

Then they will give you a position that you didn't apply for, probably just under $30K and you will have to wear shirt and tie all the time.

Can we please take a moment and give some MAJOR props to ChargerAg. Incredible persistence and dedication over the year to what I would think as one of the greatest threads of all. (Even better than cracked foundation threads)ChargerAg, I sensed your giddiness in anticipation of finding out the stories and the elusive grenade story (page 8 I think) and I am glad it has paid off for you because I shared this passion.

I have spent an hour reading every single post and it has read like a great non-fiction book: All the events leading up to the "Grenade Story" climax but leaving just enough of the story out to ensure a sequel leading up to the (dum dum DUM!!) WHOLE GRENADE STORY!

Eerily, there is a resemblance to the structure of the Harry Potter story. It can go on forever, adding stories that come about, but wondering, there has to be one major event that all this is leading to. One finale that ends the story of UCS. Only then can we walk away and say "Damn that was good"

I'm hooked folks... keep 'em coming!

Grenade? When I started there in CS next to the pool hall, I heard it was a machine gun the owner fired at his Houston office. He apparently wanted to get everybody's attention.

How is it possible I got rejected for a job from such a sucky place twice? The first time I went in and took the tests and everything and a couple days later I talked to them and they said I was too close to graduating (I was a jr. at the time). A couple months later they emailed me wanting to set up an interview so I replied to set one up, and then got a reply back that they weren't hiring people that would be graduating soon. I was like why the hell did you ****ers contact me again then if you already had my expected graduation date on file... Sounds like an awesome place.

I think that just about says it all. I wish I had this thread in book form. I think I may just print out the entire thing and keep it around for an entertaining read sometime.

It's surprising that Mike Judge never worked at UCS.
