I'd really like to hear that Grenade story too.
I worked there from January 2000 until then end of that semester (this was my freshman year, and my first "real job" ever). I quit because I took a job paying more than twice what UCS paid (computer programmer at Destia/Viatel, who is now bankrupt... the .com boom was nice while it lasted, which was eight months for me). Enough about Viatel, about UCS...
I worked on "the bench", specifically the CRT bench. I basically soldered all day, replacing defective components on the video boards and power supplies of dumb terminals. I didn't hate it; it was actually pretty laid back, especially the nights I worked the evening shift (until 10pm). Sometimes people would bring in donuts on Saturday morning (I worked every other Saturday).
However the pay did indeed suck; they paid me $6 to start and then $7 when they gave an across-the-board raise to part-time people (which from what I've heard, no one could remember such a thing happening before). The tests were stupid too ... like I gave a crap who all the VP's were or what year they were founded. And OMG... the door codes. I've forgotten what my 6-digit PIN was but I still remember punching in "85" after that for entering the bench area.
The no-smoking thing... heh, I remember someone asking a co-worker if they smoked (for possible roommate hookups) and asking for the real truth, not the "UCS truth".
All in all, I wouldn't work there again, but it wasn't all that bad in the bench, probably due to us being isolated from most of the other corporate bull****. The turnover rate was insane -- I was really surprised that this one girl had worked there three years.
Oh yeah, when I was quitting all my co-workers told me to go see Office Space... scarily accurate!
