I looked at the gold medal totals for the US and China at the last 2 Olympics.
The thing that stands out is that China is just remarkably consistent: in only three sports did their gold medal tally differ by more than 1 from 2020 to 2024, and two of those three are somewhat misleading.
-China 'lost' two weightlifting golds in 2024, but the number of weightlifting categories was reduced from 14 to 10; they won the same percentage of available golds (50%) in each year.
-China gained two golds in artistic swimming, for the simple reason that Russia was banned from these games. Russia owns this event.
-The only substantial change for China was a newfound dominance in women's boxing, winning 3 golds in 2024 versus none in 2020.
US performance was a bit more variable, with changes of 2 or more golds in 5 sports.
-Swimming was somewhat weaker in 2024 with 8 golds versus 11 in 2020, whereas track and field was markedly more dominant, with an increase from 7 to 14 golds!
-USA also picked up 2 additional golds in cycling, and lost 2 golds in shooting and volleyball.
The take home is that China slightly improved its performance by maintaining or improving their performance in 4 relatively niche sports that they were already dominating: diving (all 8 golds), shooting (5 golds), weightlifting (5 golds) and table tennis (all 5 golds). The US was able to top the medal table by the slightest margin thanks to a historic track and field performance. I'm not sure China can do much better in LA than it did here, with the US likely the favorite in 2028 due to the traditional home field advantage.

The nascent organization "World Boxing" needs to recruit a dozen or so additional member countries to gain recognition by the IOC. The IOC has made it clear that they are not willing to deal with the previous International Boxing Association (which has been suspended for the past 2 Olympic cycles) any longer, given its ironclad ties to Gazprom and Putin.
The trouble that World Boxing has is that exactly none of the nations that won gold in boxing in Paris are current members. Ireland and Ukraine should be pretty easy gets. The Uzbeks and Cuba will not defy Russia on their own. I think it comes down to whether China wants the event to stay in the Olympics or not.
Boxing has no more than a year to get its act together internationally without the Russians or be excluded from the Olympics.
