Which kind of supports the point that spending a lot on a closer doesn't make good financial sense. If your team is bad, an expensive closer doesn't help you. If your team is good, there's still a pretty good chance your expensive closer isn't dominant.


Look at what Houston is paying and he has not been the most reliable.

I think we actually started with Smith, the acquired Chapman, then had Leclerc and Sborz at the end. I do wish we'd put more resources into the closer spot. We haven't really got a guy on the mkt since Joe Nathan.

And after two good years with us Detroit signed him for 2YR/$20M and he gave them -0.2 WAR and then missed a season.

I love having a lock-down guy come in late, but guys like that are few and far between and even then you aren't sure if the version you are getting has stuff left in the tank.

I saw that yesterday in total he had 6 calls overturned between the two teams. I believe it was 8 challenges, 6 were overturned.

I'm not advocating spending big money on a closer. What I AM advocating is spending whatever money we spend on relievers who fit the closer profile. Big arm, throws heat. We've seem obsessed with guys who throw in the mid to low 90s, who also happen to be in their mid to late 30s. Maybe Teodo or one of those guys in the minors will figure it out eventually and be that guy.

I get it. Find a diamond in the rough that can give you one good full season as opposed to a bunch of middling guys that can maybe produce the same but you have to mix-match throughout the season and deal with the highs-lows of it.

I wonder if part of the calculus is trade-ability and if front office has determined that if they hit on a few of those middling guys before the ASB they can be flipped before they turn into a pumpkin.

My biggest concern was going into the season relying on an aging Chris Martin to be one of our co-closers (him and Garcia). Martin broke down a couple of times last season, and is now a year older.

I think Martin needs to be more of a 7th inning guy, with a more durable guy to rely on to close the games out. If Martin goes down, we don't have many proven options. We would be forced to make a trade, and likely have to overpay when doing so.

Bullpens are a year to year deal so I get the reluctancy to spend big there but man feels like we've gone a little too hard on the bargain sale route.

Also can usually pick up relief picking at the deadline but seems like that's been harder to do last couple years.

Our real weak point has been that we haven't developed our own lock down bullpen guy since early years Leclerc. Usually you end up with at least a homegrown guy that was a starter that you convert to a bullpen guy and get some good cheap dominant years out of them. Think of like how Milwaukee keeps hitting on guys like Hader, Williams etc. and then selling them off before they flatline. The only homegrown bullpen guys we seem to produce are middle reliever types without high leverage stuff. I'm not sure if that's on the scouting department or just bad luck with injuries etc that have deprived us of having any of those guys pan out.

I think it'd be a mistake for us to jump into the high end closer market because it's hard to allocate 20 million plus for a guy who is going to give you 65 innings. We have to develop our own guys for that role.
