I know we would love to get and unprotected pick from a team like the rockets or magic, but multiple unprotected picks plus a swap that's unprotected is pretty big. Obviously it could end up that Atlanta is really good for the next decade and they never turn into great returns. However, the Hawks have never been franchise built on consistency and you never know when their stud could have a major injury and they have a terrible season.

Timberwolves didn't have much draft assets.

The Knicks had these picks in 2023:
Quote:

2023 first round draft pick from Dallas
Dallas' 1st round pick to New York protected for selections 1-10 in 2023, 1-10 in 2024 and 1-10 in 2025; if Dallas has not conveyed a 1st round pick to New York by 2025, then Dallas will instead convey its 2025 2nd round pick to New York [Dallas-New York, 1/31/2019]

2023 first round draft pick from Detroit
Detroit's 1st round pick to New York (via Houston to Oklahoma City) protected for selections 1-18 in 2023, 1-18 in 2024, 1-13 in 2025, 1-11 in 2026 and 1-9 in 2027; if Detroit has not conveyed a 1st round pick to New York by 2027, then Detroit will instead convey its 2027 2nd round pick to New York [Detroit-Houston, 11/24/2020; Houston-Oklahoma City, 7/30/2021; New York-Oklahoma City, 6/23/2022]

2023 first round draft pick from Washington
Washington's 1st round pick to New York (via Houston to Oklahoma City) protected for selections 1-14 in 2023, 1-12 in 2024, 1-10 in 2025 and 1-8 in 2026; if Washington has not conveyed a 1st round pick to New York by 2026, then Washington will instead convey its 2026 2nd round pick and 2027 2nd round pick to New York [Houston-Washington, 12/2/2020; Houston-Oklahoma City, 7/30/2021; New York-Oklahoma City, 6/23/2022]

I also expect for Poeltl, Richardson, and McDermott to be on the trade market now. We have officially entered the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes.

With all of the player volatility and movement that goes on in todays NBA, you really have no idea what the hawks will look like in 2027 let alone 2025 so writing those picks off as bad already is pre-mature.

Look at the Nets picks the Rockets got for Harden last year, those are a boneheaded Kyrie move away from all of a sudden looking really good.

I'm really curious to see where the Spurs go from here. I read all of the logic around trading DJ. It basically boils down to the team didn't think he was a long term championship player. Meanwhile, they love all these young guys. So the question is are they handing the keys over to developing the young guys OR are they planning to use this cap space to build a competitive team. They've never NOT tried to win.

Spurs 2023 Salaries.
NBA Salary cap: $123.655

Galli: (if waived) $5mm
Doug McD: $13.750
JRich: $12.1mm
Poetl: $9.4
ZCollins: $7.35
Romeo: $5.6
Vassell: $4.4
Primo: $4.1
Keldon: $3.87
Sochan: $5
Branham: $2.9
Wesley: $2.35

Unguaranteed:
Jock: 1.5
KBD: 1.9
Tre: 1.8

QO:
Wieskampf: $1.8

If Wieskampf takes the 1.8QO and we keep Jock/KBD/Tre - we are at 15 players for $82.82mm.

Or drop KBD: 80.92.
Drop KBD + Wieskampf: 79.12mm in cap used.

That leaves 44.535 in cap space.

A max for Ayton would start at 30.25/year. That would leave the Spurs with 14.3 in cap space for a secondary free agent.

I like DJ but this trade really makes me feel like they're trying to compete. I'm not thinking in "trust the process" mode for 5 years or whatever PHI did but the path to ultimately max out DJ in 2 years after a bunch of 35-45 win seasons was making me feel pretty hopeless.

Spurs Twitter is all omg my heart wah wah but the streets are full of Johnathan Simmons and Kyle Anderson and Dewayne Dedmon types that are fan favorite-ish and yet fringe starters at best and people get so attached. It's easy to get attached when you have 50 and then the big 3 HOF guys anchoring your franchise for 20 years...sure, fall in love with the role players. But please don't stake the future of the franchise on them.

We love the promise of what's to come, don't we folks? Robertas Javtokas, I speak your name. Here's to the promise of the 2023 lottery. Swing big or don't swing at all.

Not sure what the Spurs are going to do from here... it looks like a tank but well see how FA plays out.

What is clear is that Murray was going to want a max or near max extension after next season when he's eligible and the Spurs weren't wanting to give him that. There's also the possibility that the Spurs told Murray about their re-building plans and he didn't want to be a part of it and just handled it way better than most people are used to. I wish the return wasn't so delayed but I don't think were losing some irreplaceable star or anything. Rooting for DJ though.

Yeah one way to look at this.

White and Murray were both 29th overall picks in their draft. We managed to flip these two for 4 subsequent 1st round picks (and two 1st round pick swaps). That speaks pretty highly to our scouting and player development.

This only makes sense if we felt DJ would walk if he didn't get the max, or just wanted to walk in general and was handling it way more professionally than his peers have.

I'm sad. Yeah yeah role player. Don't care. The guy worked his ass off for this team and improved every season. He was our longest tenured Spur. I love the young guys left, but trading Dejounte hurts. It hurts more than Derrick imo. Derrick I felt had started peaked. Dejounte, maybe he was there, I guess we will see what he does in Atlanta.

If the Spurs sign Ayton, they are going to have more cap space to maneuver and a great trade piece in Poeltl. That's not a tanking team. That's a team that wants to gather up a ton of young talent, roll the ball out, and see if you have future all-stars or not.

I like the idea. TF else are they going to do?
Sher Thing

My guess at the moment is they end of trading a combination of Poeltl, Gallinari, Richardson, McDermott for more picks and take the Thunder route. Save that cap space for another summer when there is more FA talent. Maybe they sign 1 or 2 guys this summer that they feel like can develop (Jalen Smith, Bagley?, I dunno).

Doubt they go the Ayton route though.

Yeah I'd be surprised if they throw money at Ayton. The Suns will match anyway.

Good. Suns don't want to give him the max, but if the Spurs offer it, the Suns have to match.

Spurs front office didn't learn anything from the Nephew fiasco, or watching the Jrue trade go down.

Just more incompetence. SMH.

Can't wait for them to bring Patty back so he and Pop can wine it up on the road next year too.

I mean there is a high possibility that Murray (Klutch Sports btw) wanted to be moved and not be apart of a rebuild.

Honestly, I think Ayton is a max player IFF the attitude concerns are overblown. I'm doubtful of this. I think they're legit and not just a clash with Monty/CP3. However, if our FO is of the mindset that Ayton won't be a cancer, I like the idea of throwing the max at him. He has the tools to be a max caliber player. 7 footers with his skills aren't that common. And another benefit even if we don't get him - we make Phoenix pay more.

I don't think in today's game, Ayton is worth the max. The only true centers that are worth it are Jokic and Embiid. Giving guys like Ayton the max is how you end up in that 7-10 seed purgatory for several years.

Maybe. He put up 17/10 in just under 30mpg this year on a wing-focused team. He shot 56% from 10-16 feet, so has a pretty solid mid-range game. He isn't just a dunk/putback machine like Deandre Jordan.

While I would rather reserve the Max for guys like Embiid, Curry, Giannis, etc, that isn't really realistic. Also, the max at his age (23yo) is different from the Max for a guy like Curry. Curry gets $48mm. Ayton would get $30mm from us next year if he takes that contract.

They can't get nothing for him. That team's championship window is about to get slammed shut. They should match, be uncomfortable, then trade him when they can if it doesn't blow over.

I agree that the typical Max guys most likely wouldn't be available to SA, but I don't think trading Dejounte is smart if the plan all along was to sign Ayton. It seems like a team minus Dejounte plus Ayton is in that 30-40 win range. That is unless one or two of the young guys takes a huge step forward which we all hope.

They could be punting for next year, but no one is guaranteed a star. If Deandre Ayton wants to play for a coach that made a Caribbean 6'11 post player into the GOATPF, you can't really turn that down.

Also, if you get Ayton, moving Poetl for 1-2 FRP isn't out of the question. McDermott is the closest thing the Spurs have to a bad contract.

Spurs have a lot of options, and a lot of draft capital going forward. But passing on Ayton because maybe someone else might want to play for us next year is a mistake.
