Yes. It is the directional pad. Look at the options and you can set up which buttons say what.

Thanks for inviting me in last night. Sorry I made the teams uneven. I'm visiting my parents and my 15 yr old nephew wanted to play with me. I had my headset with me but it looks like one of the wires got severed and it was sticking out of the side of the cable now so I will need to replace it when I get back home.

Thanks for playing with us!

FYI, almost any modern chat headset works, other than Apple earbuds. I use the Samsung earbuds that came with my phone - my Xbox One headset gave out as well.

I have the original Xbox one controllers so in order to use a standard headset I also have to buy an adapter which is an extra $25.

Add Berry Schiavo to the PS4 list. I play usually every other night between 9-11 when I'm bored. I'm a borderline challenger player that can get to challenger 2 if I play consistently.

I'm going to try and play a little tonight on XB1 at 8pm if anyone wants to party up, although my wife retains veto power tonight. If you see me online, shoot me an invite or jump in my party if I already have one.

I'm on pretty much every night at some point although Wednesday is softball night so I won't be on until 10 or so. I am back home now and I did get a new headset so at least from now on I will be able to talk to you guys and not play split screen on a small TV.

FYI - Party Matchmaking Update (copy/pasted from Psyonix:
When we announced our plans for Season 3[www.rocketleaguegame.com], we discussed our plans to deploy a Competitive Skill Restriction in a future update. We have deployed a Party Matchmaking update today to address these issues, but it's a little different from what we first explained. Originally, the restriction prevented parties from queuing for Competitive matches if their Skill Ratings were too far apart, but the more we worked on the feature, the more we realized that there was a better way to do it. Before we explain what that "better way" is, let's first discuss how we got here:

First, the Competitive Restriction would have had a negative impact on groups of friends that were not abusing the system, but fell outside the new limitations. For instance, you may have been in a party with friends three tiers below you, then you won a match, ranked up, but your friends didn't. In this scenario, you would no longer be able to play together. Theoretically, this was a negative side-effect that you'd just have to accept to maintain the integrity of competitive play, but one of the reasons we kept thinking about alternatives.

Secondly, for the Champion players among you, a three-tiered skill restriction would not have entirely fixed the ability of players to exploit the Top 100 Skill Leaderboards. A Grand Champion paired with a Superstar -- the lowest-allowed player under the restriction -- would still climb the leaderboards more quickly than two Grand Champions playing together. This isn't a bug, per se, it's a logical outcome for the skill system. A Grand Champion and Superstar team is expected to lose to a team of two Grand Champions, so they earn more Skill rating for a victory. But this kind of setup also creates an incentive for fellow Champion players to "smurf" with an alternate, Superstar-ranked account so that ranks can be gained faster than playing legitimately.

Here's what we've decided to do instead:

Improved Party Skill Rating

Our new solution does a better job of fixing the problems at hand. Here's how it works:

  • You can search for Competitive games in a Party with anyone in your friends' list, regardless of their current skill tier
  • Instead of averaging each player's skill together in a Party, Party Skill is now based on the highest-skilled player in the group
  • When skill ratings are updated after a match, the new Party Skill rating will be used to prevent players from ranking up faster by teaming up with lower-ranked friends

What does this mean in practice? Let's look at a few examples:

  • A Challenger Elite player and a Prospect Elite player party up to play Doubles together. Previously, that combination would have averaged out to roughly Challenger II-level. Under the new system, they will be considered a Challenger Elite party.
  • A Grand Champion player and an Unranked player party up. Previously, they would have matched as Rising Star, and the Grand Champion could earn skill rating despite playing lower-ranked players. This pairing will now match as Grand Champion. And, more importantly, that Grand Champion player will earn the same skill rating as a party of two Grand Champions would - not the skewed gains seen on the live servers. And their opponents will gain or lose the same rating as they would against two Grand Champions.

This new system has major upsides. First, friends can still queue Competitive together even if their ranks aren't quite close enough, and second, when players face off against parties of wide skill variance, the highest ranked player should be near their rank, not significantly above them. Finally, using a low-ranked "Smurf" teammate no longer gives any tangible benefit when ranking up.

Fixing Rank Boosting

We recognize that just fixing matches going forward doesn't address the existing issues with players who have exploited these loopholes to reach rankings they don't deserve.

For now, we will take specific action against players at Rising Star and above that have demonstrated a consistent pattern of partying with teammates well below their personal rank. This pattern is defined as follows:

  • Greater than 25% of matches played with a teammate more than eight skill tiers below the player.
  • Greater than 30 matches played with a teammate more than eight skill tiers below the player.

All players that meet either of the above criteria, and are in Rising Star tier or higher, will have their Skill Tier and MMR set to Rising Star, Division I. For the purposes of end of season rewards, they will not be considered to have reached Champion unless they reacquire that ranking after these changes.

As always we welcome your feedback and look forward to seeing how you like the new system. Enjoy!

tl;dr version: If you are in a party in ranked, you will be matched against people with similar ranks to your highest ranked party member, even if they are a Grand Champion and you are a Prospect II. For example, if I play in a party with FormerLefty now, we will be playing two people at my skill level, which will be a much higher level of play than Lefty is capable of, so we will probably lose every game.

Sorry for the delay, but after 15 years I'm no longer an AGinHI, which means I'm not 5-6 hours behind most of y'all anymore.

If your info in the op needs correcting, let me know and I'll fix/update it.

This is the stupidest change to the game they have made since it came out. It gives a huge advantage to players who are playing solo vs players who are playing in a party.

I'm talking about the new matchmaking rules. With the new matchmaking it gives individual players in doubles and Standard a HUGE advantage.

Last night I played standard in a party with friends. This is how it went all night. Our 3 players in our party were rated as follows. Rising Star, Challenger II, Challenger I. Almost every game we played was against 3 Rising Stars. One game we played 2 rising stars and a challenger elite and one game was 2 rising star and an all-star. How is that any better than it was before?

They already have game modes that encourage single players to play. With the new matchmaking it discourages players from playing in parties UNLESS everybody has the exact same rank.

I agree. They shouldn't have changed the algorithm for everybody in order to address some small minority of players that were using it to cheat the system. They should have put measures in place to deal with those specific manipulations ("smurfing" or whatever it's called).

I mean without the skill gap limit there's really no other way to "fix" smurfing and boosting imo. I was playing before this update and especially in doubles there's teams with a rising star and prospect and the rising star just solo carried against me and my friend who were both challenger 1. I get that you get games like you're experiencing but there isn't an easy fix to that problem.
FormerLefty

You are proving my point. You mentioned that before this fix you would occasionally get matched up against a team that is smurfing. I totally agree that smurfing was/is a problem and this matchmaking change removes that possibility. My point now is that EVERY game we play in a party is going to be lopsided skill wise unless we only play with players of our skill level. I don't know about you but my RL friends list consists of players of all skill levels. I am now limited to playing with only a couple of them. Unranked is such a pia I'd rather not play at all if I have to constantly deal with rotating bots/players and all the lag associated with it.

They created this fix to appease the pro level players who were unfairly being pushed out of the top leaderboards due to people cheating. They did not consider how this affects the other 99% of players.

They are actively finding players who are boosting/smurfing and resetting their accounts. That seems like a pretty decent option that doesn't negatively affect everybody else.

I played last night with my friends who are also challenger 2 and rising star and we didn't really have the issue of 3 rising stars that you had. Occasionally you'll get your matchups but there are other people on the game that have pretty similar party setups as the one that you have. Maybe they should have a playlist that is ONLY for teams of 3 instead of having a solo vs not solo one? I'm not trying to get in an argument here, I'm just saying that it's not really an easy fix.

This.

My son was put in a game last night with one of the devs from Psyonix, which I thought was pretty cool. Would have been a good opportunity to air these kinds of complaints to someone directly.

If you're on PS4, press the "share" button to get to a menu to save the last 15 minutes of gameplay (it's always recording). Later use the built in tools to trim the video down and share to YouTube.
