Don't know the certain story as this was given to me second hand from somebody who was also second hand and we all know how that goes... but first one was shot coming into a water tank and then the others followed.

Bizarre seeing what appear to be three adult cats together, maybe ursus or another biologist can explain. Shot near Howard draw in crockett county (ozona)

Oh my.

You know people make their living with livestock right?

Were these lions causing depredation? Highly unlikely unless they are running sheep. Plenty of deer for those lions. Would much rather have them running around still unless they are causing trouble. Saying that it would still be hard not to shoot one.

Oh- I'm not getting on a soapbox- to each his own.

But I'm kind of a live and let live guy. If they're affecting the bottom line, that's a different ball game.

Ozona aka crockett county is known as the wool and mohair capital of the world.

As I age, I ask myself the same question. Then I temper that with remembering killing every coyote I could find due to them getting after calves. They are beautiful, unique, animals, but they are a threat to peoples lively hood.

Pecos County is my home and the only lion I remember was caught near Iraan on the east side near Crocket.

Not to derail... have you guys seen the video from DFW about the cat prowling in Plano, Frisco, and I forget the other city, over the past 3 weeks? It was caught on home security cameras. I'm guessing it's the same cat but what do I know.

Looking at theUTV those cats are on I dismiss the notion the shooters livelihood was threatened. This was a joy hunt.

The Mountain Lion will soon be getting a little more regulated - see the link.
Right now, the only thing you can't do is road hunt them, hunt them on public lands or hunt them for the specific purpose of selling them. Other than that, open season. TPWD has been way behind other states in managing this species.

Maybe in the 1980's. Ain't much happening in the mohair business out there these days.

Well, you're wrong. It was a lease hunter but the ranch owner was plenty happy as he does make his living with livestock.

I believe there were over 20 cats killed in that county last year.

I'm ok with it as long as the population is healthy in the region. I personally wouldn't. I've yet to see one in the wild and I find big predators fascinating.

Likely that is a female and two grown cubs that haven't quite yet set out on their own.

Tom and two young females I believe.

This was most likely a litter that grew up together & probably near full grown 2 year old cats.
I can't imagine a hunter bagging 3 in an hour or two.

Mature males are extremely territorial and will fight to kill another male within that territory…young males included as far as the mature territorial lion is concerned …As Apache says this was a mom and two older cubs….. one of them being an immature Tom yet.

Probably so they can take them back to Houston or Dallas and show them off to their friends while sipping a high dollar bourbon. Makes their nuts feel bigger.

I've personally had to deal with a cat problem but never got the opportunity to shoot one. It's frustrating to watch them hunt whitetail and I would have absolutely shot one if I was presented an opportunity. That being said, I don't think I could've shot more than one of if I saw them…

I understand the impact they have on deer population and other things but I just dont know that I could shoot 3 like that or even 2.

Dang, all I've ever wanted was to see one cross a sendero and this dude pops 3 at once. Headed to Utah in 2 weeks to trophy hunt a thundercat with hounds and never felt like I needed to justify a "why" to anybody. Thanks for posting.

I think the only thing going on out that way is natural gas, deer hunting and meth.

Same with big antlers on a whitetail? Same with African hunts?

The pearl clutching in this post is ridiculous.

I'd like to go lion hunting with dogs which apparently is the best way to be selective on which animals are killed. al listening to meateater, i'd really like to taste what the meat is like.

lastly, I wish we could get more data on lions and bobcats in the state, so we could properly manage their numbers.

There is a balance that needs to be kept. Nature and God handled this fine for thousands of years. The Native Americans understood that well.
Then the immigration of the frontier happened and those folks brought livestock and felt the need to eradicate all predators so they could make a living. The addition of the livestock upset that range and environment balance and has been a point of contention for years and will continue to be cause we want nothing that can kill any of our livestock, any deer we like to hunt, any elk we like to hunt …. but complain about hogs taking over our range.
And I say that growing up in a ranching family that homesteaded in the hill country in the late 1800's.
There is a balance that is healthy for the range and the wildlife in it.

I'm making this comment in jest only…… So we are going to trust data on predators from the same TPWD that many don't trust on policies on CWD and many others? It has been said on this forum many times to " follow the money". So who stands to gain the most if all predators are gone?
Just for fun…..

Apache. I worked with some TPWD biologist on a lion project back in the early 90's in west Texas. It is my understanding they still are doing that? What say you?

I don't trust TPWD when they can't even educate their GWs on what a lion track looks like, which then skews the data for "confirmed sightings".
