That episode was so masterfully done taking us through 20 years of two people still building meaningful and love-filled lives against overwhelming odds, and exploring how our lives given meaning by our relationships with others. Almost all the world had gone to hell, but because these two people had each other, they not only survived, they triumphed, given the circumstances.

Frank's insistence on caring for the properties, the joy/gratitude over a mere strawberry, and Bill finding purpose in his life after Armageddon simply because he had someone to love, care for and protect. The story wasn't about gay sex, it was about basic humanity.

Disagree. It should have been about basic humanity. And the fact that it went gay was just a minor eye roll against the divisive bull**** getting pushed non stop.

Instead they went out of the way to make it about gay sex instead.

you could skip the whole ten plus minutes from the piano scene to the freaking strawberry scene and the only thing you miss is basically gay sex.

that was a deliberately divisive choice that detracted from the show for most people.

put another way, if this were mature straight widows/widowers, or just friends, a) it wouldnt have changed the emotional dynamic and b) they would not have spent so much time, if any, on that.

It's almost like they have the creative ability to have a gay storyline and expand on it however they want.

And you have the choice not to watch, as someone with very limited emotional capacity.

Game-wise, the letter, the context clues, the actual muted-but-devastated reaction from Bill, Joel doing the Joel thing of being empathetic-but-bad-at-being-empathetic after he realizes what Frank was to Bill. All great storytelling in the game without much to go off of. I'm glad they went HAM on a full ass episode for this to flesh out the characters and the universe, just like I was glad about how they did the same thing with the cold opens for the first two episode.

Exactly! What's the point of the show if you don't explore things like this. We already have the video game why anyone want this to be exactly the same is beyond me.

A great episode but honestly maybe the weakest of the three so far is my initial reaction.

At times I felt like they were spending a hell of a lot of time on a character that has a very short time in the story, but he the letter really brought it home and nailed the point in the greater story of things.

If it had been a heterosexual couple, would anybody be commenting about the romance/sex?

I doubt it, which is why I think the objections are just homophobia and not film criticism.

You don't have to be gay to have appreciated the story of what the characters were experiencing.

I'm not saying you should enjoy watching homosexual romance. I certainly don't, because the thought of getting it on with a guy is creepy to me. But that's not literary/film criticism. It's just an objection to something you don't like that you think it is politically motivated to force feed you.

It didn't come off like that to me in this instance. It seemed sincere. THERE ARE GAY COUPLES IN OUR WORLD.

There's no agenda, it's just their story and how they want to tell it.

And I have no idea what the hell you're talking about. It's clear you're very upset about people different than you. You should stop watching, then.

People don't care about your sensitivities to people different from themselves. The last of us has always had multiple gay storylines, and it's not going to change for you.

So, don't watch it and stop detailing the thread?

What exactly is the agenda? And what is it costing me?
i think most people can agree that sexual preference is personal business, and should be, legally, even if religion has other opinions; and as long as it stays with consenting adults it is no one else's business. However, 'who or what you like to ****' is also not something that defines you completely as a person; it is not something to be 'proud' of, or have a 'month' for, or 'make a flag' for, or 'push on everyone' as something they should be forced to deal with all day every day.

i think most people can also agree on the basic stats, that only a very small minority of people are gay, and also that them being forced to be 'in the closet', or abused, is even more unhealthy for everyone, and not the best way for society to handle this issue.

however, contrary to common sense, decency, or anyone's best interests, the 'powers that be' are making a MASSIVE push to divide people using sexuality, race, and anything else they can use as a tool.

for every 'innocent' or 'naive' hollywood type that is just giddy that they can finally show gay sex, and is overdoing it 24/7/365, there are also major financial and political players that are pushing it purely to divide people, in particular americans.

what it is costing us all is hate, divisiveness, a decrease in tolerance on all sides, and loss of political power and cohesiveness as a country. It is costing people that are 'for' all this 'woke' **** credibility and goodwill from the majority.

this show went well off into that agenda with this episode, to no good end. It didnt move the plot. It didnt excite anyone. it didnt do anything but clearly push the divide and take away from a good story.

I agree with everything you said except the last statement. There's a mountain of evidence on this thread and all over social media that tons of people felt it was definitely to a good end--it made them feel stuff deeply.

It wasn't about moving the overall plot forward. It was a look into a personal love story that took place within the larger plot, and gave us an opportunity to feel a lot of emotions and relate in many ways to the characters. There are staunch conservatives like myself in this very thread who are praising the episode. One of the reasons I enjoyed it because it *didn't* feel agenda driven to me, like so much crap on tv and in movies these days clearly is.

I wouldn't say it didn't move the plot forward. It certainly wasn't the primary focus, but it did move things forward at the end. Joel and Ellie got a truck, so we don't have to watch them walk everywhere. Also, Bill gave Joel a reason to care about Ellie. Up to this point she has just been cargo for him.
