I like how they are claiming discussion of how the tendrils work is a spoiler, even though that aspect of the show is not in the game.

Honestly, a lot of those frequenting that thread deserve it if the poster in question truly knows what's happening

Never seen so much pretentious ******baggery on this board until that thread activity
Prediction, someone on that thread ends up spoiling key point plots before the gamer thread does. Even with two separate threads everyone here seems keen on using spoiler tags. This to me reinforces how special that game is, none of the gamers wants to ruin the experience for the non-gamers. But someone on that thread will end up choosing violence and ruining everything, chaos ensues.
im just doing it cause I know inevitably someone on the non gamer thread will accidentally click this one instead….
I've only played the first game, so I would greatly appreciate anyone with TLOU 2 spoilers to continue to use spoiler tags.
i would highly....HIGHLY....recommend getting TLOU 2 and at least playing through the first hour or two as quickly as possible....do not ask why....

Now that the show is out, I'm definitely considering playing TLOU 2. I came to the first one many years late (I just played it probably two years ago). I did enjoy the game, but I found the game play repetitive. Every level was essentially the same thing. Sneak around, stab someone, sneak some more, shoot someone, maybe pull a pallet around, etc. I had just played the first three Uncharted games, then TLOU. Although, I do love all those games, they are all basically the same thing as far as game play is concerned. I needed a break from that kind of game so I passed on TLOU 2. I'm probably ready to pick that kind of game up again, though.
As others have said, please pick up TLOU2 if you have any time to kill at all. The game play in the Uncharted series is superior imo (but much different as you know) and I even love that story even though the movie was garbage. This show is off to such a great start and I promise you'll love playing 2. Replayed it for a bit the other night and had forgotten just how excellent it is. .

This^

TLOU2 is phenomenal. I've said it before but it's my 2nd favorite game of all time. You won't regret the experience by the time you're finished
Gameplay was fantastic. And the graphics make it hard for me to play any other game with lesser design/detail.

The story and moralizing I found absurd.

Then again, I've spent a significant portion of my life working with people who've had violent and murderous thoughts, some having carried them out, and I don't believe Druckmann has a clue about the reality of life other than mistaking his personal problems for those of society,

but I'll spare y'all my own moralizing.

TLOU2 had better gameplay and graphics, but I likely won't ever replay it. I found it to be one massive trauma fest.

From the other thread...

Quote:

Watched ep 2 last night. Not a big gamer but I've played TLOU a few times (nowhere near completing the game) ...I was bummed to see Tess go out so early on, but I presume that's how it plays out in the game

The other thread is funny. They are so paranoid about spoilers, that they basically don't want any talk about the actual show. Honestly, I don't think TLOU is really a spoiler type of show. The story is good, but it's not like Game of Thrones. You're not going to be shocked at the end of each episode.
Yep, what sucks is there are users on that thread we like posting with, but there's a contingent of gatekeepers on there hellbent on accusing everyone of spoilers, and telling people to **** off, calling people dip****s, etc.
Have never seen the level of pretentiousness on this board that I've seen on that thread.

It's surprising several of them didn't get permabanned the other night for their comments.

I wish we could get TC, Spilner, and Madmarttigan back in here.
I'll be honest, I've been monitoring both threads. I don't want to get accused later on of reading both threads and then getting gatekept on that thread like the others have.

I've never played the games, but I'm a gamer and have friends who are huge fans, so by osmosis, I know some of stuff that takes place, in a general sense. Ie. the fact that Ellie is immune, and the fact that Joel dies in Pt 2. That was literally everywhere on social media so it was hard to avoid.

But beyond that I don't know any specifics.

I think the folks in that thread are being way over the top. And this coming from the guy who has been that guy before, but that's more to do with ACTUAL spoilery information like set leaks, stuff from the GoT books, etc. The things that have been mentioned there have been completely harmless, as I said in that thread. I'm honestly confused why they're getting so uppity.

You guys in here have been great with the spoiler tags, so I don't see any reason I can't be on both.

For anyone that has played and enjoyed Red Dead Redemption 1&2, how does it compare to the story telling and gameplay of The Last of Us? Or is TLoU closer to how Resident Evil's gameplay?

Gameplay wise, it's way different outside of being a third person shooter. TLOU is pretty much on rails with exploration taking place within contained areas. TLOU2 has some larger areas, but still pretty contained.

Story wise, they're both great, but they have different approaches. RDR is a game with cinematic moments. TLOU is a story with gameplay moments.

RE is a decent comparison, though obviously TLOU doesn't go off the rails in the same way those games do thematically. But you definitely feel the same kind of resource crunch, especially in harder difficulties.

really good question actually.....honestly from an overall gameplay standpoint both of those games are so strong but different it's hard to chose....

RDR = open world exploration vs TLOU = liner gameplay with little exploration
RDR = has a story but can venture off and do own thing for a while vs TLOU = very strong story that keeps you constantly engaged
RDR = action based vs TLOU = action/horror based

i honestly couldn't pick one over the other.....both are way too good in their own right...

but TLOU is nothing like resident evils gameplay regardless of which game you pick to compare.....but RE7 and RE8 are really really good horror games you should also give a chance if you're into that genre

It's amazing the quality fall-off between the RE games and the movies. (And Netflix series.)

Many of the RE game are masterpieces. (REmake, RE4.)

All its adaptations are B-level, mid and forgettable trash. (Though the first movie is a guilty pleasure of mine.)

the RE games follow an odd pattern.....original 2 were awesome.....3rd was also pretty good.....then it went off the rails and they stopped being great....

then bam! #4 comes along with a completely different gameplay feel, style, setup, etc and everyone loved it.....then 5 and 6 sucked with some fillers thrown in....

then bam! #7 comes along with another completely different style of gameplay again....and it's awesome and everyone loved it....#8 was pretty good too....

but now they seem bent on re-mastering their old games (the #4 remaster i think comes out soon....they've already done 1-3)....

as far as the movies go....yeah they've all been terrible....

One other thing to consider outside of story and gameplay which a few of the posters here have described pretty well is that RDR 1&2 could take you up to and well over 50-70 hours of gameplay because of how open it is. I took a look back at my RDR2 hours logged and it was like 105 or something crazy. Granted it was during quarantine, but you do lose a lot of time to it if you don't stay focused on the story.

TLOU1 could be beaten in 12-15 hours. TLOU2 probably 30ish.

My theory as to why most video game movies/TV suck is because the writers don't really respect the stories in video games. You saw the same problem in the super hero genre for decades. It basically took a comic book company (and Chris Nolan) making movies that respected the genre before Hollywood realized that they are a great property.

With TLOU, the head writer of the game is also writing and producing the show, so you know he's not going to mess with the story too much. Hopefully, Hollywood will see the success of TLOU and realize there are great stories and characters in games. They just need to show some respect instead of coming at it with an, "I can do this better," attitude.

I hope in general it means Hollywood recognizes the importance of creators having a driving hand in production. (Fingers crossed for Brandon Sanderson)

I'm super excited about where they go with the intro flashbacks. As someone mentioned earlier, that's something that is always missing from Zombie stories. It's always, "Main character wakes up and the world is in chaos." I'm curious about what happened to someone like the President. This thing spreads insanely fast. Are they able to get him into isolation before he got infected? Or are we going to see the President eating other cabinet members?

Your comic book example is ignoring the absolute smash hits Fox had with X-men and Spider-man (and to a certain extent, Fantastic Four, panned as it was) that came before both of those. Both showed that comic book movies could be successful, and it was what emboldened Marvel to take a chance on Iron Man and WB to decide to reboot Batman.

With games, it really comes down to the medium. Game writing is far different from movie and TV writing because it typically is intertwined with gameplay and objectives. Even in games that are typically lauded for their stories, the narrative is broken up into pieces that are advanced through gameplay. It's specifically designed for the player to interact with it and drive it forward, often toward the resolution being fighting a big bad, but it is also put forth in a way that if the player meanders, much of what they do still relates and even fills in the gaps in many cases. With movies or TV, the audience is spectating, and so the writer and director are the ones steering everything. It's a different mindset, and history has shown that it's hard to go between the two (not just limited to games > movies/tv...movie/tv game adaptations have historically had monumental problems).

Last of Us was tailor made to be adapted. It's a guided, cinematic experience, where more than many games, almost everything you do drives the narrative forward. The people in it are very human, not some superpowered heroes who mow through everything. At the end of it all, there's not some big boss fight with weakpoints and multiple phases, but a very human man making a very emotional decision and having to live with it. It was never a typical game, which is what made it great, and is what makes it a great for an adaptation.

My guess is that they keep within the timeline for the intro sequences…..ep 1 was 1968 so WAY in the past….ep 2 was 2 days before the outbreak and in Indonesia….

So my guess is ep 3 is going to show maybe the day after Indonesia in another country….or maybe an airport or some other common area folks are used to…..

Then ep 4 showing the day (or perhaps weeks) after the initial outbreak on September 26th showing more of a military breakdown/failure of fighting them off…..

Beyond that not sure what else they'll have but could be really awesome….

good grief they averaged 100M an episode cost for this show????? yikes!!! this show has been incredible so far but nothing about the first 2 episodes shows a cost of 100M. but maybe it's all those practical effects/make up that's running up the bill....don't know.....

here's a breakdown of the 3rd episode trailer....we already know a decent bit about it but the breakdown pretty much shows what most of us guessed which is we're going to get more backstory between frank and bill....this is going to be another feature length run time it seems of about 1.5 hours as well....

No way it's $100M. I think it came under HOTD per episode and HOTD was $20M per.
