Saying that episode was in any way representative of the game or those character's roles in the game I think reveals some interesting gamer fantasies. Nothing wrong with that guys

Are you sure? I really doubt they are going to be able to do the whole first game in one season at this pace. I'll be really disappointed if that's the case.
I agree, I wish they would have broken it up as well. Seems that it is really moving fast and missing some of the key moments of the game.

Last of Us Season 1 Timeline

Feels like they are going to have to trim down on stuff that happens later on to me.
Keep in mind how much of the game is actual gameplay. Pittsburgh, for example, is all gameplay up until you meet Henry and Sam. So I bet you cover their story in the next episode. From there, you can have meeting up with Tommy in episode 5, the university (and giraffe!) in episode 6, winter in episode 7, sounds like the flashback to Ellie in the mall in episode 8, and the Fireflies in episode 9.

Hey NBD if thats the fantasy you had for the NPCs in that part of the story. Virtually no one talked about it at that time, like literally no one. But, maybe everyone just felt it was taboo and any discussion about it was memory holed.

That or it simply didn't exist in the game and you've gotta reach for some conclusion otherwise to justify the existence of what was a well told and acted episode, albeit not part of the game.

I looked up on youtube how long a video is with all the cut scenes and it was showing over 5 hours. I agree there is a lot of game play outside of that, and unfortunately they are cutting a lot of that out already. Just to get where we are now we have lost

1. The original fight at the dockyard
2. Getting back to Marlene
3. The Subway station (which I was really looking forward to)
4. The school to get the battery

Those are just 4 big moments in the game that I wish they would have touched on. I feel that this short of a season will lose a lot just to get the story told.

Also the leaning building. Would have loved seeing that, but imagine it was beyond their budget. Definitely looks like the next one will have more action, which definitely tracks with Pittsburgh in the game. It does seem like part of what they're doing here, though, is making the world feel more sparse, which feels more realistic for what they've designed from a worldbuilding point of view. Obviously in the game, you have to create those action moments to keep the player engaged, but with a show, you can slow it down more.

My only issue was knowing that that episode was going to cause this thread to go to crap for a while.

Quote:

what it is costing us all is hate, divisiveness, a decrease in tolerance on all sides, and loss of political power and cohesiveness as a country. It is costing people that are 'for' all this 'woke' **** credibility and goodwill from the majority.

I disagree with this. Just don't be a racist or a homophobe and there wouldn't be division. Seems easy enough to me.

As for the episode, I don't think anyone has mentioned Joel's explanation of events to Ellie. Again, background that has been added for the show and, again, pitch perfect. No other show or movie (that I'm aware of) has addressed this pet peeve that was mentioned earlier in this thread, "How does the world go to sh__t in one day." I thought that was an original, logical, brilliant way to address that. Sure Frosted Flakes (for example) isn't shipping world wide on the exact same day but I loved that they addresses it and handled it greatly.

I like the new episode, I wanted the show to take different directions and it did. This has finally inspired me to replay TLOU for the first time since I originally played it at release.

I loved the episode, it was beautiful and crushing. I get that it's divisive but it's rooted in the game, and this was so much better than what I expected out of the episode. While on the surface the love scene might have felt unnecessary I think it was really important. Bill spent years putting up physical walls to protect himself when the world went to hell after putting up figurative walls to protect himself from the world he didn't want to be known by. It showed him being vulnerable when he never allowed it before. He never got to be his true self until he met Frank. He had a very different life than Joel the last 20 years. He said he was never scared until he met Frank, I think anyone with a family understands that. Joel has been surviving, Bill and Frank were living a life they built together. They lived in a fortress but it was filled with art and music. Showing Joel and Ellie drive away from their open window, just a genius decision. That's one of the best episodes of TV I've ever seen.

So is this thread still a crap shoot?

Don't get the craziness honestly especially those of us that played the game.

Great story. Great episode. Great acting. Coulda done without envisioning Bill and Franks biological lightsabers smashed together but doesn't take away from how great that episode was.

Coulda sworn there was some gay in GOT….hell wasn't Pedro Pascals character bi?

Watched it again tonight. Liked it even more than when I watched it the first time last night. There's definitely something about relatability in this episode for those in long term relationships, whether hetero or homo. The episode is not about a gay relationship. The episode is about unconditional love.

Also, when they first show Bill's bunker, you catch a glimpse of a Guns 'N Ammo magazine. Pretty sure this is the series of magazines you pick up throughout the game to learn new crafting/become more proficient with weapons. That was cool to see

I love how ambiguous the writers of TLOU (HBO) are with certain things. I wonder if Bill considered himself gay before he met Frank? When Frank shows up, it had been four years (IRC) since Bill had had any human interaction. That is ANY interaction. So makes you wonder, if it was a woman that fell in the pit would it have been the same if everything went the same and she was as forward as Frank was. Bill even says in bed that he had been with a woman before. So is it Bill being gay all along or just desiring for human intimacy/love and it just happened to be with a man?

It turns into a pretty amazing and true love story. Bill and Frank both find their purpose in life even after life has stopped. The most touching part to me was when Bill went out on the middle of the night to combat the raiders without even waking Frank. His purpose of protection not only Frank, but what they had built together in the town.

Finally got around to watching it last night - was avoiding both thread notifications and as soon as the episode really got into the meat of Bill & Frank - I quickly thought back to how these threads would be spun out of control. The non-gamer thread yelling "Why are there gays in this show!" While also tip-toeing around the "they were gay in the game!" but no spoilers. Ah, well.

I, too, noticed the GUNS N AMMO magazine. And I liked at the end/basement they showed us a workbench. Bella Ramsey is really growing into Ellie. She's delivering lines just like her. I vaguely remember going through the arcade and her commenting on Mortal Kombat.

Feel like with this diversion from the game - we missed a level right? Didn't Bill help get you into the school to retrieve something for the S-10 to get it to start? And that's the first time we meet a bloater, correct? Think we're gonna get a lot more action in the next two episodes - no SHIV kills yet!

Yeah, that's what we were talking about above, they've cut several direct gameplay sections. I think they're cutting out a lot of the gameplay both for flow and budgetary reasons. Things like fetch quests and your way blocked by a roof cave in for the umpteenth time work for level and mission design purposes, but less for keeping folks engaged in a show.

An interesting consideration, to me, has to do with the fungus expert doc in Indonesia mentioning that the flour is a perfect substrate.

It seems like the fungi would have to have evolved way beyond their normal temperature tolerances, given that just about anything flour goes into is going to be baked/fried, or otherwise cooked at temps a hell of a lot higher than human body temperature.

There may be some aspect of this I'm missing, though, like maybe they're only susceptible to high temps after they "sprout" or something. I know nothing of the life cycle of a fungus.

You guys do this so ****ing much when a show/movie shows anything that isn't heteronormative white males. A movie highlights women? Its only for social justice. A show shows a black person doing something amazing, obviously social justice. A gay love story, SOCIAL JUSTICE!!!!!

Maybe people just want to tell these stories because they are worth telling? The fact that ya'll think that the only time a non white male or non straight male is worth highlighting is due to some other agenda is just telling on yourself that you don't think those stories are worth exploring. In that world view, anytime anyone other than the people you value are highlighted its due to some weird agenda you've cooked up and not because they might be interesting.

let's get the facts straight - people have been watching movies about great things done by gay people, gay love stories, minority stories, you name it, for decades and decades now.

until the recent deliberate efforts to use these categories to divide america, no one gave a **** either way, if it was good, it was good.

now, you have 2% of the population being represented in 100% of the content; 6% of the population being represented in 100% of the content; etc., without any regard whatsoever for history, facts, story lines, or anything other than identity politics being deliberately used for destructive purposes.

I think Pittsburgh is going to be a bit of a turning point in the series. I think after the third episode we're going to see an increase in action both with people as well as the infected. They've really slow played that stuff in the show so far. That third episode is also going to reinforce to Joel that he has one job now, protect Ellie. I'm guessing we get two episodes that cover Pittsburgh/Sam and Henry, I could be wrong but I don't think they can cover all that stuff and give much time to them in one episode. That would give us 4 episodes to cover the rest of the game.

still playing through the game again and had forgotten how long that segment was and that you run into henry and sam during it....i tried to find out how long each episode is going to be and if accurate then they're going to end up cutting a good bit from the game because it seems the remaining episodes are less than (or right at) 60 minutes.....

according to several sites episode 4 is going to be 50 minutes....

There is definitely a lot of destructive (some of it relatively harmless) trash in this thread, but that's pretty well-established at this point. However, the idea that content similar to what was in episode 3 of TLOU or the idea that content (all of it) inside that actual episode has been destructive in any way besides derailing this thread with from what the show is actually about...is insane to me.

A direct result of that episode on this exact thread is random posters on the internet volunteering VERY intimate, and at times beautiful, and at other times difficult recollections of their own lives and personal relationships. All of these recollections from what I've seen, have been responded to with respect and empathy.

How do you view that as destructive? I am struggling to see it.
