#1 is one of my favorite pages in the whole book. i don't know why the huge, egregious departure from the source was necessary.

I know I know...books. Sorry. I feel better though.

To the uninitiated, that scene reads like a stalemate: Gandalf and the Witch King trade barbs, but Rohan arrives before the contest can be decided. I think that's how Jackson read the scene, and he wanted to up the stakes before Theoden saves the day. I think he missed the nuance and then extrapolated in exactly the wrong direction.

Instead, after the Witch King rides through the gates, Gandalf commands him to stop (he does), go back (he does), and fall into the abyss (oh, hi Eowyn). The Witch King retorts, "die now, and curse in vain," but his own curses are empty.

Exactly. At this point in the story, Gandalf is the most powerful being in Middle-Earth, outside of Sauron. At one point in the book, he tells someone (can't remember who) he is the most dangerous thing they will ever encounter, unless they happen to come before the Dark Lord himself.

I would accept a trade of blows of some kind, putting the WK on par with Gandalf in the viewers' minds. But breaking Gandalf's staff? Which immediately places him higher in the hierarchy of Middle-Earth is just stupid.

That scene wasn't in the theatrical release, right? Only in the extended edition?

Correct.

I get irritated with the treatment of Faramir. Tolkien made a point to describe Faramir as a throwback to Numenor. He was never tempted by the ring and knew to hell Frodo on his quest.

Two Towers is the worst of the movies, largely in part because of that.

It's always tough when the character in the book has a lot of internal dialogue. I think that is what he was going for in that scene, but I agree that it didn't translate correctly.

I knew what was supposed to be happening, but my non-bookreading friends thought he was just like Boromir.

Was going down the YouTube rabbit hole and came across this interview. Yep, that's going to be the next hour of my life.

That was great, thanks for posting.

Simply the best film score ever composed.

Ian McKellan had a great Oxford interview as well.

I thought the Amazon series was taking place during the Second Age. Why are the two trees being shown in this preview? I guess there will be flashbacks to the time of the two trees during the show?

I'm blown away by the view and the interpretation of Valinor, though. It's stunning.

Your guess is probably pretty good about the flashbacks.

I'm guessing the image is showing one of these:
  • Earendil strolling into Valinor to plead for the exiles/humans at the end of the First Age. Adds background info to the setting as a whole and the foundation of Numenor in particular.
  • A pre-corrupted Sauron in Valinor.
  • A more Amazon-style Galadriel (yes, Tolkien did write a version like that) in Valinor prior to Ungoliant munching on the trees. We can see her role in the rebellion and her subsequent banning, adding flavor to her character.

Each of those stories adds a lot of background to the setting as a whole.

The 2 trees were dead husks with Earendil approached Valinor.

Ungoliant drained them early in the first age.

Wow... and I thought I was nerdy. There are a lot of Silmarillion people in this thread.

There are 2 kinds of people in the world: those who have read the silmarillion, and illiterate baboons.
