Has the show stated yet what family Alliser Thorne is from (The nights watch guy who doesn't like Snow)? I'd been assuming Lannister, because of the way he treats Snow and because of his blond hair, but I don't think they ever specifically said.

Anyone catch his lineage, if it's been discussed?

well he's presumably of House Thorne, though it's never said (in the books or the show) what area of Westeros that's from. it's possible his family never owned land or anything, most of the people in the night's watch came from very meager backgrounds

Book info, no spoilers, unless the as yet unrevealed background of Alliser Thorne plays a huge role in your pet theory on the show. In that case do not read below :






House Thorne is sworn to King's Landing per the AGOT appendix. In the chapters where Tyrion tours the wall, Thorne is revealed to have been sent to the wall after the sack of King's Landing during Robert's Rebellion. He fought on the Targaryen side.

there are so many predictions on here I have no idea which one is a spoiler.

My take on reading the book

I decided to pick up since I would be spending a buttload of hours on a place and in the airport last weekend. Im not a big “fantasy” guy and I had never once heard of A Song of Ice and Fire until the series was talked about on here. I do like to read and I try to read as many books as possible (right now I am also reading the Lost City of Z and its pretty freaking sweet) but I had not planned on reading these books when I sat down to watch the pilot.

I got sucked in. I wanted to learn about the history of Westeros and the people who inhabit it. Reading the book after a movie is not something I normally like but I actually like it this time. I can see their faces and their world and let my mind wonder more about what the H is going on than what Kings Landing or The Wall look like.

Im sure when I finish book 1 it will be difficult to not grab book 2 so I don’t know what my plan is there yet. I am going to try and hold off on book 2 until after season 2 starts but I might not be able to resist

Either way I highly recommend starting the book now that everything from season 1 is fresh in your mind.

My take on the finale

I liked it. Just enough action and mystery to lead into season 2. In the Sopranos the 2nd to last episode often threw the biggest punch of the season so that idea is ok with me.

I didn’t think the eggs would hatch. I thought that somewhere else in the Kingdom a dragon/s would awake and we wouldnt know about that until season 2 or later. I thought that living through the fire would be enough to earn her an army. The question is: who is she the most pissed at? Will she try to take the 7 kingdoms or is she going to the Dothraki first? Either way Im gald we have dragons.

Robb didn’t look too thrilled to be the King of the North. Then again those who want power rarely deserve it. Greyjoy doesn’t bother me as much as he bothers the rest of the board, but Im not sold on his loyalty 100%.

Arya is going to be Joan of Arc/The Bride (Kill Bill for those who don’t know). I was REALLY wanting her to kill those 2 kids. I am interested in her relationship with Robert’s basterd and her (hopeful) reunion with Jon Snow.

I hope the Imp wrecks shop in Kings Landing and I think he will. He is too clever and will see through Littlefinger’s BS.

I didn’t like Sansa until she put Joff in his place and then for a second thought about killing him. Props.

I think Theon truly does love Robb like a brother but the loyalty and honor to the Greyjoys is evident, as well as his pride in his family's unsuccessful rebellion. This could play out one of two ways, either he will summon the Greyjoys to ally themselves with the Starks and the North to regain their status or Theon may be pressured to use his relationship to bring Robb and the Starks down. We haven't really seen where the Greyjoy kingdom stands in regards to the Lannisters and whether they are still bitter over the Starks helping Robert quell their revolt. It should be interesting either way.

Where have the baratheon brothers been during all this? I feel like those guys have a chance to make a stand after the Starks and Lannisters finish with each other

they briefly mentioned in ep. 10 that renly and stannis had laid claim to the throne, so there's basically 4 "kings" right now

Just caught up on the HBO season. Wanted to comment that I liked the book better than the show, simply because I was more emotionally attached to characters while reading the book.

For instance (NOT A SPOILER, BUT SKIP IT IF YOU HAVE YOUR PANTIES IN A WAD AND DON'T WANT TO KNOW ANY DETAILS THAT WERE IN THE 1ST BOOK BUT NOT SPELLED OUT ON SCREEN)













Sansa telling the Queen her fathers plans to remove them from Kings Landing, thus leading to the Queen pulling the Rope-a-Dope when Robert died. That wasn't really shown or focused-on in the show. It was one of the chapters that I literally screamed "DAMN YOU SANSA, YOU STUPID BIA!" after reading.

Also, I had a more emotional reaction to the "King in the North" scene as described in the book. It was the 2nd to last chapter, and it was built up much more than just the 2 minute clip the show condensed it down to.


Regardless, I think HBO did the book pretty good justice, for its scope, and I look forward to season 2 (Though I'm only half way through reading the 2nd book now).

This killed me when I saw it the other day. Probably Germans/moon....

Having just started book 2, I do wonder how battle scenes will be done. I know they are expensive to cloth a ton of extras, it is difficult to CGI a fight. etc.

The Tywin/Tyrion fight was acceptable, imho, it would have wasted a lot of time to show it and the way they did it was funny as hell.

Just think of the Riverrun fight, a castle with three rivers and a moat, three separate Lannister forces being driven into the rivers.

If budget was an issue here is what I would do: Use the introduction graphics to set up battle lines, take Raegar's loss at the Trident for example. Have Raegar's lines in red, Robert's in black. Red lines from river to cavalry, archers on the far side of the river. Half of Robert's cavalry running down the archers, Robert's vanguard "V" the middle pinching the stress of Raegar's forces against the river. In the middle of the Red line you see a Dragon miniature (Raegar) and the side of Robert's van has a Stag.

The moment they meet in the interactive map if zooms (quick black fade) to a set scene between R&R on the river bank. You need 30-40 extras to fill the back of the shots, film for 40 secs of exchanges then Robert smashes Raegar's chest with his hammer, then it zooms back into the war map and shows the rout of the red lines. Cheap, quick and informative.

Most people are watching this because it is a unique world with people in unique situations, it would be a travesty if they hold back with the storyline.

One of my friends told me about what happens to a certain POV-character in the 3rd book (me just starting #2), I hit him in the nuts three times. He threatened to tell me more, I threatened to switch from my first to my taser on the same target. It took him 10 secs to ponder then he STFU.

Finished book 4 Sunday.

I will buy A Dance With Dragons tomorrow!

I haven't watched any of the HBO version.

Book 3 has a lot of WTF moments in it.

I had a serious spoiler bomb inadvertently dropped on me vis a vis a misdirected text message. It made me sick to my stomach.

I'd hate to be one of the people waiting for the show to continue next year. So much potential to be spoiled in the mean time.

I think billoncapitolhill needs to stop talking to that person.

Got a question for anybody here. The very first scene of the show, the white walkers leave a pile of bodies in the shape of a circle with a line through it. Is there any reason for this shape, other than to horrify?

No explanation. They also see a spiral pattern when Jon Snow is with Mance. Mance just said "always the artists."

I assume it's part of their magic. But I'm not sure the patterns were in the books, so I've never seen any reader explanations of this.

Interesting that the entire Season 1 thread was only 800+ posts total. I'm guessing Episode 1 of the final season might go 800+ posts on its own. Of course I didn't start watching until between Season 1 and 2. I don't recall hearing any buzz about this show until after Season 1 had ended. Not sure if I was just oblivious to it or if it took until the end of Season 1 for most people to pick up on it.

Just binged first 6 eps of season 1 yesterday. Great show so far. I thought me and the wife were the only two people who hadn't seen this show already.
