My husband read the book, and I didn't... but we both really enjoyed the first episode!
It seems to be doing well among the critics, has an 81 right now on Metacritic.

I'm hoping its able to steadily build as the season goes on. DVD sales with hopefully play their part in addition to drawing in new viewers. I think the story will really start to draw people in a lot more around mid-season as the plot gets more layered and all the characters are established and familiar to the viewer.

the DVDs are already bought in my case. i'll be watching the hell out of those when they come out, this is the first time in a long, long time that i've been this into a TV series
Finally got to watch the first episode and was very impressed.

What a great first episode! I was sure the little kid was going to be a major player in the series then BOOM! What a great last scene!

didn't read the books so this is just my thoughts, but i think the kid lives and is probably in a coma or something for a while. i'm probably wrong though. either way good series premiere
those of us that read the books are gonna have to be real careful with spoilers!

Like it did with Boardwalk Empire in September, HBO just renewed Game of Thrones moments after the ratings for the premiere episode were in. For Game of Thrones, those ratings were solid, not great. But, also like with Boardwalk Empire, HBO invested in elaborate sets and designs in recreating the world from George R.R. Martin's books, so a second season was considered a sure thing.
In its heavily promoted premiere on Sunday night, HBO's new fantasy series landed between True Blood and Boardwalk Empire ratings-wise. For its debut 9 PM airing, Game of Thrones drew 2.2 million viewers, down 54% from the September premiere of Boardwalk Empire but up 57% from the 1.4 million who tuned in for the debut of True Blood 3 years ago.

I've never read any of the books, I've read zero spoilers, all I've done is watch the first episode. And I'll bet right now that kid isn't dead.

I was so interested by the first episode of the show, ive read a 5th of the book since then lol. It followed the book VERY closely so far.
Well, thanks to you guys, I broke down and bought the book on my Kindle last night.

Finally watched the 1st episode last night. It was excellent! I am having a hard time turning the book off I kept trying to compare scene to scene.

As for the show, I watched it and have never read the books. I found it to be a little convoluted, but I chalk that up to their decision to introduce about 1,000 characters in the first episode. Still enjoyable, though.

That was brother/sister at the end right? Quite a few characters for one episode.
Someone posted a link to a simple summary for the characters that doesnt really spoil anything. Yes it was Jaime and Cersei Lannister (twins)

Well I meant "off" as in stop thinking about it. To watch it with a clean slate. But nowadays I do turn off my kindle to stop reading so I guess I do turn off my books.

Yea didn't bother me felt standard for an HBO pilot. I didn't care for the dany and drogo sex scene in the book it has a less rapey vibe to it.

The series started off with a bang. I can't wait for next week.

yes, tv, but they didn't include the seduction scene preceding it. Dany wasn't exactly fighting him by the end
