How much time passed between Robert taking the throne and riding to Winterfell to "ask" Ned to become the Hand?

I'm waiting until after the first season to start reading the books. I figured I should wait at least until then before I started spoiling things for me. I just don't have the patience to wait a year for season 2. I've totally nerded out on this show if my excessive amount of posts on this thread wasnt obvious enough. such an engrossing story. Can't wait to read book 1 to get more backstory on all of these characters.

CBand...you really only need to wait 3 more days before the end of Season 1. Im sure you could start the first book and not be put off by sunday.

Is the finally only 60mins? Or any luck that we will have a 90/120mins finale?

Or better yet are we gonna a "BSG:Razor" short of the Robert Rebellion? It would give us a chance to see more of Ned and Robert and maybe Samuel L Jackson as the Mad King.

Like the imp said, if the Lannisters were behind the assassination attempt they certainly wouldn't have used a dagger that belonged to one of them.

Wasn't the whole reason there was an assassination attempt was because Bran saw the dirty little sibling secret? Why would Theon or Littlefinger be involved? The Lannisters weren't even people of interest at the time of the assassination, so how would Theon or Littlefinger even know that there was going to be an attempt on Bran's life? The only theory that somewhat makes sense to me is that maybe Jamie passed the order down to The Hound, and he made the call to use the knife.

That was my reasoning too, Baskin.

It could be Hodor the huge albino dummy and he has been pulling a Keyser Soze the whole time haha.

Thats book info. Its actually more like 16 or 17 years because all the characters are aged up. Robb Stark and Jon Snow were born during the war. They are younger in the books and older in the show.

Unless baseball has suddenly, somehow, got more exciting than watching paint dry, I'll pass.

I was honestly being sarcastic. I have no clue how many years have passed.

<--Non-reader here.

Robert said 17 years at one point when he and Ned were reminiscing.

One character that is intriguing me is Bronn. I think he's only been mentioned once in this thread in passing. From some of you guys that haven't read the books, have they given any kind of background on this guy. He just seemed to show up and latch himself to Tyrion in the Vale. He’s obviously a really skilled fighter and I think at one point Tyrion said something about his assassination skills. But other than that, they didn’t seem to know each other. The thing that is intriguing me is he and the actor that plays Tywin look remarkably similar, like they could be father/son or brothers, but that could be a purely coincidental casting job. Although there was just something in the way Bronn told Tywin that Tywin wouldn’t know Bronn’s father that caught my attention. But intrigue aside, Bronn has provided some of the best one-liners in the show and he and Tyrion together make a very entertaining pair.

Their relationship is pretty great. I think he just admired the way that Tyrian fought for himself however he could despite his disadvantages and thought he was pretty clever and funny. The opportunity to save him also gave him the chance to have someone who could provide as much gold, women, and wine that he could want as long as he kept him safe. Judging from the brief glimpses we've gotten about his past this seems to be a pretty sweet gig that he wouldn't want to leave. Him obviously enjoying Tyrians company and carefree attitude doesn't hurt either. I agree he is pretty entertaining and they play well off each other.

+1 on the Bronn/Tyrion posts...I think Bronn could be a surprisingly shallow character (mercenary motivated by riches) or surprisingly deep (past ties to other major characters with a big role in store). It's stuff like this that makes me love this show.

As someone who has read all the books, I find this thread almost as entertaining as the actual show

Bronn was one of the sellswords in the inn who responded to Catelyn's request for help in capturing Tyrion. (He just happened to be there.)

That clarifies things a bit. I couldn't remember at what point he showed up.

kinda sucked? that was an awesome finale. the nights watch speech got me pumped, we saw arya/gendry, surprisingly well-done dagons, king in the north, some classic jaime lines

i greatly enjoyed it

Good episode, I just wished it tied up more of Jamie/Starks issues and give a cliffhanger in King's Landing

that's about how it is in the books as well. if anything, the cliffhanger could be that Tyrion is heading back down to be hand of the king, which sets up a ton of interesting stuff

How long do you want to ignore this user?
pretty solid finish. Obviously sets up a ton for a LONG series, which is nice.

My buddy and I continue to laugh at the fact that we keep hearing "winter is coming"....it's been coming since practically the first scene of the series! Hurry up already!
