Also, if you are going to talk books, make a separate book thread. There will be plenty of people that are watching it as a standalone show without knowledge of what happens down the road. See the True Blood threads for how that quickly spirals out of control. Book plots = spoilers.

You should still watch it. Even though you know the spoiler it will still be shocking. A lot happens from the beginning to that point. Lots of strong dynamic characters.

I just watched the preview on HBO (i.e. the 1st ~13 minutes of the 1st episode). Good news:

1) It doesn't looked like they skimped on the budget. Now all I saw was the 1st beyond the wall scene and the Stark execution, but neither of those scenes felt even a little bit cheesy (prop-wise).
2) The acting seems legit. Again, the preview only included two scenes, but both of them looked great and were well acted. They didn't have anything that would make somebody cringe because of the cheesiness. The actors looked good.

As any fantasy fan knows, cheesiness is usually an overwhelming problem in movies/shows. I'm a huge fan of the genre and will do my best to overlook huge problems, but wow, there's literally almost nothing out there that's watchable. Basically, Lord of the Rings is the golden standard. Then, there's... Conan the Barbarian (I'm a huge Arnold fan, and I love that movie, but I can admit it's cheesy as hell), Willow (LOL), and maybe Legends of the Seeker (I found this series too painful to watch. I desperately wanted to like it but I just couldn't, even though Kahlan was hawt)

But yea, the 1st 13 minutes of Game of Thrones looked very promising. It appears that it's well funded and is going to be well done. And damn that's rare with fantasy

What kind of hype has GoT recieved back in the states?

It seems like it is a lot on the internet but im not sure if that's because im looking for it or because it really is more than usual.

Hype pretty much only exists on the internet, so you don't really have any different gauge of it being away.

As far as media hype goes, it's receiving less than Boardwalk Empire did. It's just got a fanboy base.

I just clicked on HBO (I don't pay for it) and now I'm watching True Blood. Apparently I have it after all, I wonder if Dish is having a this-weekend-only special?

never read the books.

Pilot definitely set the tone for major character development with potential storylines all over the board.

I'm hooked for now.

I also agree with the post up towards the top in keeping threads separate...just like Big Brother does threads for people who only watch the show and threads for people who read updates/watch the feeds....let's keep this one to strictly the show.

Start a different thread for those who read the books and also watch the show to discuss the similarities, differences, and potential plot developments.

This actually feels like a show that could have been in the HBO glory days of '01-06. Boardwalk Empire never got over the hump of being a show that was trying really hard to be from that time...this one feels like it's already there. Epic, well done, a show I couldn't imagine anywhere but HBO. I also haven't read the books, but I'm in on this one.

Awesome. This is my first experience with watching a show/movie having already read the book(s), kind of a weird feeling. That being said, they nailed it, wow. The production values were great, which is not a surprise considering its HBO.

I thought the acting was very solid overall, but the actors who play Viserys and Arya stood out to me. The little girl who plays Arya does a great job of capturing the spirit of the character, one of my favorites from the book.

Looking forward to the next episode already. Also, it will be fun to see what the non-book readers have to say as we progress each week.

Probably, as long as you're not against spoilers obviously. The show stays pretty true to the books from what I can tell so far. You'll get a lot more backstory, character development, etc.

Meh...spoilers don't ruin it for me. I'm so impatient, I can't help but read spoilers.

One thing I noticed...I assume that if you haven't read the books you might want to pay a little attention to the intro credit sequence. Based on the opening for last night, I'm guessing it changes every week to show you where the events take place in that episode and how they relate on the fantasy world map. One of the locations in the credits (Pentos) is not likely to make sense in more than just in last nights episodes, so Im guessing it will change. Its a good move, TV viewers dont have the little map thats often in the fornt of fantasy books.

Does anyone know if the first episode will be streaming on Hulu or HBO.com for free?

My dvr is not working and I have a busy week and can't catch any of the reruns. I know some premium networks will show just the first episode for free on those sites, not sure if that is customary for HBO though.

Enjoyed it. HBO is back. Between Boardwalk, Thrones, Eastbound, Entourage Bored to Death, and Curb, I watch more shows on HBO than any other network.

Also, intro credits do change from episode to episode according to early reviewers. So pay attention.

Who is your provider? Uverse/Fios/Cox/DirecTV subscribers all have access to HBOGo, so you can watch it online there if you are using one of them (hbogo.com). HBO isn't in the habit of giving their content away for free, so you will have to resort to less legal means if you don't use one of the above.

I have dish network and I don't think HBO GO is available.

If you're a non-reader and confused (or up for a good laugh), check out EW's episode recap. It provides some explanation to the various characters and their connections.
