He'll probably go to another team and bat .260 with 40 HRs and we'll be asking where that guy was all last year.

The problem with Carter is how he fits in our lineup. With so many boom bust guys we can't hide him and wait for his hot streak.

A more conventional team with better all around bats could hide him and just wait for him to come around. We need the production so it's a bit more difficult.

I could easily see a resurgence along the lines of JD Martinez eminent with Carter.

We've heard plenty of chatter over the last few months about the Astros' interest in adding at the back of their pen. It appears from the latest notes that the club is still casting a wide net:

  • Houston recently discussed power righty Ken Giles with the Phillies, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports on Twitter. Philadelphia "brought up" young starters Lance McCullers Jr. and Vince Velasquez in the talks, per the report. That obviously indicates what kind of return Philadelphia seeks. From my perspective, it would be somewhat surprising to see the 'Stros part with controllable, MLB-level arms such as those, given that they not only have the possibility of being long-term rotation pieces but might be expected to be dominant relievers themselves if shifted to such a role.
  • The Astros have also "been engaged" with the Rays on their high-leverage arms,Brad Boxberger and Jake McGee, Crasnick tweets. It appears that GM Jeff Luhnow is looking for ways to add controllable pieces at the back of the pen, Crasnick suggests.
  • Having a preference for long-term control, though, doesn't appear to mean that the club isn't seriously interested in otherworldly Reds closer Aroldis Chapman, as Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets that he sits "on top of the list" for Houston. Interestingly, Crasnick notes on Twitter that Astros owner Jim Crane is reputedly a "big fan" of the Cuban sensation.

There isn't a RP in baseball I trade Lance for.

Yep.

Lance is off limits. I would at least listen on VV. He could be an interesting trade piece for the right return.

I believe he's team controlled through 2018.

No more Carter Farters in H-town

"The Astros will non-tender first baseman/DH Chris Carter, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports on Twitter."

I'm not opposed to moving Conger, but we couldn't get anything for him? Just cash considerations?

He's a catcher that can't be trusted to catch (throw really) plus nothing special at the plate.

The Cong Gong tolls slowly and sadly this morning.

2 great guys but probably the right moves.

Going to have to find a way to replace Carter's RBI production.

Carter got RBIs because he had 272 ABs in the 4-6 holes. I fully expect Reed to come in and match Carter's production and then some.

Let's not start anointing Reed just yet...kid is still very young and had those numbers in A and AA ball. Let's see what kind of spring training he has. I don't know why they don't talk about Tyler White...dude had a monster year for Fresno. Batted around 360...

Plus this is the kind of mustache that I want on the ballclub. It might not be the mustache the Astros want, but it's the mustache they need:

I should have said Reed/White. Maybe even both. Regardless I am not overly worried about replacing Carter's production. Even if both aren't ready then a combo of Tucker and Valbuena should do the trick too.

I don't ever want to see Tucker playing defense again. I've seen little leaguers with better instincts. I wouldn't mind Valbuena as a pinch hitter type. He's not consistent enough to be an every day starter.

Kyle Tucker doesn't approve of this message

I have a feeling we're going to see Valbuena at 3B with White/Reed coming up to play 1B.

Valbuena is inconsistent but he plays a great 3B and has the pop we like.

I'm just a little skeptical about the corner infield spots and feel like Lunhow better start adding some pieces soon. I know Carter, Conger, and Lowrie weren't providing much, but I hope Lunhow doesn't plan on replacing all three with MiLB prospects (Reed/White, Duffy/Moran, and some catching prospect).

I posted a big breakdown in the old thread, but we need to worry about 1st and DH ahead of 3rd and C. I think we're okay with Reed/White moving forward at 1st. Now its just a matter of what to do with Gattis and the DH spot. I hope that means more Tucker vs R and maybe a new bad in the off season.

I doubt the Astros are even looking to replace Castro. Catchers like him are probably going to become more common than less common, and unlike most there is actually a sliver of hope offensively with him because he has been a good offensive player in the majors before.

The Astros went to the world series with Adam Everett and Brad Ausmus at C and SS and some people (especially some stat geek types who have probably now gone the other way) thought playing those guys every day was crazy, but to me it now appears that multiple Adam Everett types are starting in the big leagues for decent teams and I think catcher will also become even more of a totally defensive driven position, too.
