Almost time to start the 2016 season thread! 6 days until mlb opening day!

Same thing we saw with Springer and Correa.

If a player is in the minors for at least two weeks at any time in the season (besides rehab assignments), you get an extra year of team control. However because he was called up so early, one of the six remaining years becomes salary arbitration instead of minimum salary.

If a player is in the minors when the super 2 deadline passes (typically late May/early June), that extra year of team control stays at minimum salary.

I think you mean "almost time to bump the 2016 season thread!"

We leave Friday morning for New York. Weather is looking a bit chilly but sunny for Opening Day in Yankee Stadium. This week of work is going by extremely slow.

Haven't looked into it lately, what are the current ramifications for Reed/Moran on service time? Are we looking at a deal like we have seen in the past where they just have to sit out 30-50 games to get them under team control for an extra year?

I read they're trying to keep Reed down until sometime in June to avoid Super Two status.

It should also be noted that neither Reed nor Moran have any experience above AA. I don't think it's a bad idea to let both start the year at AAA to get a little more experience and everyday playing time.

Just to expand on the Jon Singleton contract.

Many people see that the deal is worth $35 million. That's the highest possible $ that Jon can make in this contract. Here are the terms:

quote:
5 years/$10M (2014-18), plus 2019-21 club options

  • signed extension with Houston 6/5/14, replacing 1-year/$0.5M deal ($40,750 in minors) signed 3/6/14

  • 14:$1.5M, 15:$2M, 16:$2M, 17:$2M, 18:$2M, 19:$2.5M club option ($0.5M buyout), 20:$5M club option ($0.25M buyout),21:$13M club option ($0.25M buyout)
  • may earn additional $5M in performance, award bonuses

His only guaranteed money is through 2018. If he still sucks by then, they pay the $0.5 million buyout in 2019 and he walks away with $10 million over the course of 5 years. Small potatoes in the MLB.

I wish they would get more players on these types of contracts. Remember during this time, it was reported that they approached Robbie Grossman and George Springer, who both turned them down. I bet Robbie is kicking himself a little.

I'm not saying these will become the norm in baseball, but think of yourself as a 22 year old. $10 million is a ton of $ to have guaranteed to you at age 22. I would be tempted to sign that sucker too, just like Jon did.

Then the Astros have to worry about Bud Norris crying again if more of these contracts happen, not worth it IMO

Well, as far as the players go, they are horrible.

With Springer's injury history already in his short career, and his propensity to run into walls, a deal like that would have been a nice safety blanket for him to have. I hope he doesn't wind up kicking himself.

Does this mean we will be getting some early Tucker F***ers from the DH spot?
shano0603

Damn straight.. I hope we have solid production from the DH spot to where Gattis has to be the backup catcher to get playing time.

Our bullpen really crapped the bed today. Not a great sign with the season right around the corner

Keuchel was basically unhittable. Before looking at the box score I was hoping that it was no-name guys who gave up 8 runs in a single inning... Being Neshek, Sipp and Hoyt really sucks.

Dallas looked incredible today. No one in the league can touch him if he's pitching like that. Just can't stop watching.

17 IP in the spring. 0 ER. 16 K's. .53 Whip. Virtually unhittable... Some of those dudes in the video weren't even close.

Check out the Brewers lineup tonight. The Stros board's favorite 2 players.

No doubt Carter goes 4-4 with 4 bombs and Villar goes for the cycle. Book it

Domingo Santana is hitting leadoff for the Brew?

Carter's hitting .194 with 4 HRs this spring. That's about right.

Man...Wandy not going to be on opening day roster. Was really rooting for the guy.

However, if that means Feliz is on this team than so be it. Feliz has looked really good this spring and think he can be a nice arm either as a starter or out of the pen.
