Here is an interesting article about production of a free agent first year after signing a big contract. Maybe provides some support for not breaking the bank via the free agency route but instead using free agency to plug smaller holes and to use trades to perhaps make the acquisition of bigger pieces.

Damn that was tits!!

So glad I got to sit down and watch every pitch.

And Julia is looking like she's in mid-season form already! Smokin

Watched the entire game at Luke's during their Friday Power Hour when it happened live. I think I polished off at least 10 pints with my tab being around 40 including celebratory shots! Great evening!

McTaggart reports the Astros won the arbitration case against Jason Castro.

This doesn't happen often does it? Guess it's just that blatant that he sucks balls.

Trade for Lucroy already....

It wasn't over very much. Castro's agent was likely being a little greedy trying to squeeze more than hes worth. We are paying him well enough for his defense. But his offense needs to show up or else he is way overvalued.

It was $5 million vs $5.25 million. If anything its surprising they actually had a hearing.

Front office trying to set a tone/precedent? I found it interesting as well that they made it to the hearing.

Cheap ass Crane wanted that extra .25M

Plus we're already over paying him considering he is a liability at the plate.

Look no further than when Castro was out late last year to see how important he is to this team.

I think the FO takes a "file and trial" approach to arbitration. They negotiate until the arbitration is filed and after that they just go to the hearing.

Having a quality backup would lessen that importance. Conger was a defensive liability last year.

Gattis has hernia surgery. Out 4-6 weeks.

Well damn. Guy works out and gets in shape and now is on the shelf for awhile. So much for working on catching and first base this spring.

So I'm guessing we start the season with Rasmus at DH and Jake in the OF somewhere.

Not too terribly bad as I don't see him missing much regular season time, but not having a ST to get his timing down will hurt. Or as bad as he was down the stretch last year maybe it won't make much of a difference.

Or AJ Reed/Tyler White at DH!

Now that's an idea!!

If one of them shows they're ready in ST I'd be all for it, but will this staff have the cojones to call one of them up and actually play him?

Other than Correa and McCullers I haven't been too impressed with the handling of our call ups.

Any interest in Pedro Alvarez as a DH/1B safety net? Guy was crushing it the last few years before last year. I know hes a defensive liability but hes got a great power bat

I'm not sure that is an entirely fair assessment. They also called up VV and Preston fairly early in the season as well. I know we all are wanting to see AJ up here, but this staff overall does a pretty good job of letting our prospects develop and calling them up to the bigs when they're ready, IMO.

I think your comment about Spring Training is 100% correct. AJ and Tyler control their own destiny this spring. If one of them proves they can hit big league pitching, it will be really tough to keep one or both of them off the team given the success they had last season.

They royally screwed up Springer's call up. He should have been here a year earlier.

Well that's true. I won't argue that one at all

I agree that they're developed nicely but it seems to me they get called up then end up riding the pine while we trot out garbage.

  • I know it was purely for financial reasons but Villar was straight dog chit at SS and Correa should've been up here as soon as Lowrie went down.
  • Tucker should've had way more ABs at DH as Gattis continued to sheet his pants down the stretch.
  • VV I thought was under utilized. Not sure if that's due to not having a spot, but I think we could've gotten more out of him while he was here. Since he was traded for a valuable piece I guess I'm OK with it, but I remember thinking 'Where the hell is VV?' It's like he came up and showed some good stuff and just disappeared.
  • Duffy was called up and we saw him a total of what 4 times?
  • Stassi was called up and we continued to run Conger out there while teams ran a muck on the bases and Castro couldn't hit water while falling out of a boat.
  • Santana showed some promise and was swinging the bat decently then he vanished in thin air.
  • I even think that protecting Lance like we did hurt us. He shouldn't have sat out in AAA for as long as he did. That was about the time our pitching staff was sliding and we had Lance resting in the minors.

Just seems that they identify that these guys are ready then call them up and we never hear from them again. I hope if Reed or White make this team that they're actually utilized and given a fair shake.

Tucker should be the DH against righties even with a healthy Gattis.

I guess I might be one of the last on Gattis train, but I think he bounces back in a big way this year (after getting healthy).

The biggest reason we'll see improvement is that he doesn't have the adjustment period of going from a position player to a DH this year. His second half stats are actually pretty solid besides that brutal postseason. He posted a wRC+ of 113 with a BABIP of .259 and doubled his walk rate in the second half last year compared to a wRC+ of 88 with a BABIP of .267.
Ag_07

Be interesting to see those numbers compared with other DHs in the league.

I don't mind Gattis' production and don't think he's a bad player, but I just don't think it's enough from the DH spot.

Plus he is a bargain for $3M we're offering to paying him.
bigbass1170
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah he's definitely on the lower half of DHs, sorted by OPS. His second half OPS (.795) gets him close to where he should be (.820 or better for an effective DH).

On a related note, apparently I somehow missed out on Jimmy Parades being Baltimore's DH. Weird.

Paredes falls into the JD Martinez category of Astros players who didn't work out here that just needed a change of scenery.

He just never could put it all together and show enough for us to hold on to him.
