Honestly, Gates is up there with Sul Ross and Earl Rudder, not just for what he did for the school, but for his public service as well. Those three are probably the best presidents we've ever had, and I think it's no coincidence that they were all outstanding and selfless public servants in some form or fashion.

Dr. Gates was and is a great American. I was a friend of Henry Bellmon who was a governor twice and a US Senator in between. Henry was a Marine Captain who was awarded the Silver Star for valor on Iwo Jima. It is really sad that we don't have many people like these who were so willing to serve their country. I followed Gates when he was Secretary of Defense.. In my mind he was one of the best over the last two or three decades.

These days we just don' t have many like these who are willing to serve their country.
