I don't think we need starters from the portal with the exception of possibly LB. What we do need is depth. We saw how fragile being low on numbers could be in the Florida game.

If you look at the portal for the Power 5 conferences the majority of guys have already found new teams. This leaves us looking at the second window or Group of 5 castoffs.

I am not saying we should be full up. But I would think a reasonable goal would be 80 scholarship guys by this point. Because, I expect to lose a few more of ours in May.

I don't know who is in charge of transfer recruiting, but I think they need to relook their approach. Of the publicized offers we have made we have signed 1: Tony Grimes.

We have, based on social media, an extremely low acceptance rate on our offers at this point.

There's no question that something has greatly affected our recruiting efforts this year, and it was an issue long before the season fell apart.

Every position with the exception of WR has a 3 deep already. So obviously we could use 2 WR and maybe a LB for experience. Other than that we aren't desperate. If we have injuries like last year we won't win many games regardless of depth.

Also just verified we currently have 75 scholarships. We will probably land 5+ more.

3 deep at LB? I guess you are assuming we are going to run the ridiculous 3-2 front? I also hate when we talk about depth, it is all about warm bodies. As of now I only count one SEC ready LB, a couple possible and then long shots. We desperately need another high end LB (actually a couple).

The run D scares the hell out of me for next year. Hopefully we scrap the 3 man front most of the time, especially with our lack of talent at LB.
vander54

We only run 2 LB at a time. We have 6 scholarship LB, we could use 1 more experienced LB to make sure our 2 deep is experienced and preferably one that can challenge the starters.

As for our running D there are two things. First we were extremely inexperienced on the DL, second we had to play a little more prevent defense because our offense sucked. 3 TD and we were almost guaranteed to lose. So we didn't want to give up easy quick scores.

Posted a lot of updates on commitments on the OP.
One really good fit I think is Myles Jones. Very smart way to end college career at Duke.

The only question is can he stay healthy.

He's missed the last two years with injuries.

Gets to play with his old DC, smart move.

We need depth at LB, OL (especially OT) and CB. Between transfers and late signing we should take at least 5 more people

OT would be 4th or maybe as far a 6th most important need.

WR is way more important and you could argue RB as well.

LB is a high impact high collision position, starting LBs miss games all the time. Look what happened when Cooper was out for a few games last season.

Right now the LB position is unacceptable by a large margin. Our competitors have LBs as good as Cooper sitting on the bench and playing STs only. We have Cooper, then 2 guys with some experience..... all being backed up by 3 true FR. That is not nearly good enough or close enough to call the position group acceptable and safe.

We need(ed) 2 LBs from the portal that have potential to start... and have landed 0, Portal transfer season isn't over of course, but if we do not pick up 2 high quality LBs in the portal it will cost us games in 2023.

As well in the next recruiting cycle we need to get 3 more. The losses of Perkins and then Hill are bad. Overall Jimbo has done a great job recruiting every other position on the team, but the LB recruiting has been poor and that needs to change.

He needs to boot his boy and get a real, proven, high level recruiting LB coach.

I believe he was Coach Elko's "boy" who most were afraid would go with him to Duke.

Also, LBs play a key role on special teams. If we don't get more depth, expect to see a downturn in STs.

I agree. But we can use safeties for those spots.

NCAA makes change to college football transfer portal (msn.com)

"...While players going into the portal for the first time will still be able to get immediate eligibility at their next school, the NCAA is trying to stop players from entering the transfer portal multiple times.

What's new: The NCAA Division I Council approved legislation to limit waivers for second-time transfer players. Now, any undergraduates who transfer a second time, or any other time after that, must meet specific guidelines in order to be eligible for immediate playing time starting with the 2023-24 season or risk sitting out a year between transfers.

With exceptions: Under the new rule, players can still get immediate eligibility at their next school if they are transferring due to a physical injury or mental health concern.

Exigent circumstances: And the NCAA will also consider "exigent circumstances" like abuse or sexual assault, but will not consider academic or athletic reasons..."

Theses are whale-sized, highly difficult to define and to assess loopholes that any player with an aggressive attorney can glide through. NCAA is doing the Riverdance.

NCAA's only chance at slowing the implosion is requiring NIL registration for all contracts and limiting transfers with immediate eligibility to one time.

I don't necessarily disagree. I'd think how/how well those terms are defined and how willing the NCAA is to try and enforce those terms given its recent history of ending up on the losing end of things.

At the very least, I would think (and hope) the existence of some fairly well-defined terms would ****** the number of kids entering to an extent. Even a modest reduction (25% ish) would be good.
