Not a laughing matter. This is why possession of venomous critters must be damn near impossible for the public. The risk is simply insane.
Does anyone know if there is any cobra anti-venom available if someone did get hit by that *******? Possibly the Houston Zoo . I understand that a cobra bite must be treated very quickly .

Bold - Darwinism will take care of that if they're an idiot and just want a deadly snake

The former, I disagree... if I want to own a cobra, why can't I (I don't want to)? A permit or whatever TPWD allows is plenty. I'm more concerned with invasive species than I am letting people buy a Cobra, Gaboon viper or Fer-de-lance.

Because dumb asses let those "pets" go free becoming an invasive and very deadly species.

LOL, I worked with someone at a zoo who had a Rhino Viper at her house. She had a friend over and it but her friend. She had it illegally within the city limits. I don't know how she figured out how to not incriminate herself when taking her friend to the hospital.

Where'd they get antivenin?

That's specifically why I mentioned invasive species... most highly venomous snakes aren't the same risk here, in TX, to survive our winters and create a breeding population.

Totally different situation in Florida which I agree with limiting species ownership and increasing regulation.

Local hospital. We used the local hospital for our exotic antivenin supply.

Cool. I'd heard they had some wierd toxic ability, but I guess it is toad eating.

It will make your hand swell a little. I got bitten one time when I was being stupid and had just fed my other snakes, thus, I smelled like food. Thumb swelled a bit.

Without divulging what zoo it was, most zoos use the local hospital for synthetic antivenin if they don't already stock their own. I've worked at 5 different zoos and aquariums.

What are the chances that a BCS hospital will have cobra anti-venom or any smaller town without a large zoo ? Thats my point. It just should not be allowed to have these exotic deadly critters unless they are professionally maintained and managed.
Question...how long would an innocent kid have after getting hit by that damn cobra or a Rhino viper ? Time for diagnosis and life flight to Houston ?

Cobra venom -- neurotoxic -- is among most rapid.
respiratory failure ... then death ... maybe 30 minutes

Is 30 minutes to death still true if respiratory support (i.e. - intubation & mask ventilation) is provided? A tube and an ambu bag can buy you a lot of time if the initial cause of death is limited to respiratory failure

With ventilatory support you can live much longer, but the really bad neurotoxins start cauzing seizures and brain damage eventually.

To answer another question posed above, it is highly unlikely any of the hospitals in the BCS area keep antivenin for exotic snake species. In fact, most hospitals in the state don't keep coral snake antivenin. I had to fly some in to Temple from Dallas one time for a legitimate coral snake bite during residency. Which bring me to the other point which is tertitiary care centers usually don't send patients to the hospital that has the antivenin, they have the antivenin sent to them, usually by helicopter which takes a couple hours between calling for the stuff, getting a flight team together, and getting it shipped wherever it is going.

When I was in Abilene, our consulting vet got tagged by an Eyelash Viper. It was an accident. He had to get life flighted to DFW.

So, yes, most hospitals won't have more specific stuff - they'll just have generic stuff like CroFab, which is for native pit-vipers.
Badace52
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Crofab is all that any hospital outside of a major metropolitan area will carry, and the only reason major metropolitan areas have other antivenins is usually due to partnerships with local zoos. Antivenin is prohibitively expensive for hospital pharmacies to have on hand if they have to purchase it themselves since it almost never gets used.

A couple of you may remember the story I told about my buddy who was bit by a coral snake a few years ago. By the time they located a place that carried the antivenin it was too late to really do any good, so they just treated the symptoms. He got lucky and didn't end up with any lasting nerve damage.
Badace52

Yeah, this guy's symptoms were really pretty minimal as well, but the surgeons we admitted to insisted we get the antivenin since we had a proof positive ID on the coral snake (guy brought it with him in a five gallon bucket). He only got bit cuz he picked it up while he was drunk in a creek bed when he came up on it. He thought it was a pretty snake and he dropped it when it bit him. Then he thought he better take the snake with him to the hospital, so he picked it up again and it bit him again. You can't make this stuff up...

Not surprising. Friend of mine was in a fraternity in the 80's. The fraternity was renting a house with a pond on the property. One of the guys was from Louisiana, and one weekend brought a small alligator (about 2' if I recall) and let it loose in the pond. All the other guys thought it was cool, so they decided it would be their mascot. A few weeks later during Friday keg one of the other guys was at the pond futzing around with the alligator. He started dragging it by the tail when all of the sudden it whipped around and bit the heel off his Red Wing boot. The gator went back to Louisiana soon after that.

When I was young I was terrible at IDing snakes so I treated them all as venomous until proven otherwise.
Caught them, messed with them, opened their mouths to look for fangs constantly...
Years I did this as a kid, never bitten.
As an adult, mostly due to OB, I learned to ID snakes.
Now I know that with the exception of an occasional copper head nearly all are harmless.

Been bit twice since I stopped treating them all as venomous.

I loved this from the KBTX article:

Quote:

In a news release on Friday, officers said the snake "behaved aggressively" and is now deceased.

Quote:

"The snake was removed and Animal Control is attempting to locate the owner to ensure they are in good health," said the news release.

Really cool! I'm pretty sure if you threw a BBQ at your house, only like three people from the OB would go... cause all of the "nope ropes" you got there.

And what post from me would be complete without some copperheads. These were the last double catch night I had a couple of weeks ago. The cool nights have kept it quiet here since then. I really like the one with the faint white edges on its color changes.

Not my pics but pulled from the neighborhood FB page this morning. I'm guessing it's due to the development of the neighborhood since we built our house and proximity to the various green-belts but I haven't seen a snake in our yard in years.

Apart from somebody claiming mothballs are a snake repellent the comments are pretty tame.
