What's the point of breeding wolves into poodles? Or horses into Shetland ponies? Or glow in the dark pigs? Sometimes it's done just because you can

Don't take my phone with me when i run so i didn't get a picture, but saw a coral snake along buffalo bayou in houston this morning.

He was just hanging out right off the trail. Was pretty cool to see him.

Had a close encounter with a copper head at the lease this weekend. The son and I were walking back to the atv and he tripped over some rough ground from hogs and and sure enough as he falls I catch a snake move out of the corner of my eye about 5 ft away. Scooped him up real fast and then showed him the snake and explained not to mess with those and that they were bad snakes

What was the point of breeding that trait in to them? Keep from having to sharpen your knife as often when lopping their heads off?
Beats me. They are native to Eastern Europe....easier for Commies? My highly quirky eldest picked her, which is pretty appropriate.

This chicken has Chernobyl written all over it.

How can something be so pretty and vile at the same time?

Normally I'd have snake pics at the deer lease, but I think they all evolved flippers and swam away this year.

Depends on how you view them. They are beautiful creatures using the adaptations they possess to kill their prey and protect themselves. Their venom, after all, is designed to immobilize or start digestion (depending on the snake), not to defend (although they will defend if necessary).

I've interacted with tons of venomous snakes as well as non-venomous ones, and found 99.9% of them to be very calm and unagressive as long as I was acting in kind.

Something like 90-95% of people who get bitten pick up or touch venomous snakes, and the majority of these involve alcohol (presentation from lead Herpetologist at t.u.).

I've rarely had venomous snakes even strike when moving them, but I always try to be calm and careful not to harm the snake.

They're actions a lot different if you actually spend time interacting with them as opposed to those who don't.

DBWS from my brother's place on Toledo Bend this weekend. He said it had been hanging out in the same general place the last couple of weeks. It was gone this morning when I left.

This was supposedly seen by an acquaintance in Houston at a warehouse. Doesn't look native. Thoughts?

Looks like a ball python but with some sort of pattern morph. Hard to tell on size... but that's what I would guess.

No no no.

They changed to poisonous because the hogs were getting immune to their venom.

Walked up this really sad looking indigo outside of Three Rivers recently. Hopefully it gets a meal and a shed and beats whatever illness it has. Or, since it was approaching 7ft, maybe it's an old snake and its time to go.

Just curious, what constitutes 'old' for a snake like this?

The end is never peaceful in nature, but it is sad to see an indigo in that condition. I hope it wasn't long before some predator came along and ended it.

What a rare sight. Thanks for posting.

Thought y'all would appreciate this. A new genus of snake was discovered in old Mexico. It is only known from specimens removed from other snakes stomachs.

The mysterious dinner snake.

It reminds me of the conventional wisdom that road kills or collecting of gray banded kings on the surface does little to hurt the overall population. We have no idea what or how much goes on underneath us.

Btw that snake is beautiful.
