we are normally good for 5-10 Copperhead sightings around our place in GA, but none this year.

They all moved to MouthBQ's place.

Incidentally, snakes have really slowed with the drought. Maybe 5 in the last 2 weeks. They have all moved to near surface water or are hybernating below ground I believe.

I hadn't seen a snake all summer until tonight on my run.

Almost stepped right in the middle of a two foot copperhead crossing the trail right in front of me. I think I startled him as much as he did me. After a brief pause he went on his way back into the woods.

Towards the end of my run I spotted another snake about 3 foot long hanging out on the side of the trail. He was right in the middle of some brush and it was dusk so it was hard to get a positive ID. I am leaning cottonmouth based on the body, but I couldn't get a good look at the head or face. He didn't want anything to do with me and slithered off into the trees.

In six years I have lived here, I had only seen one other snake right in the trail like this, so it was unusual to see two in one night.

Sorry, no phone with me so no pics.

My first puff adder in the wild. Someone had already killed it. They are said to be very docile and shy. Wish it would have gotten away. They are known as chipili here.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6070685/Snake-preacher-gets-bitten-four-years-father-killed-rattlesnake.html

Quote:

This is the startling moment a controversial American pastor, whose father was killed after being bitten by a snake, is himself attacked by a serpent.

Cody Coots is the pastor at the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus' Name church in Middlesboro, Kentucky - one of America's last remaining snake-handling churches.

During his sermon, Pastor Coots can be seen handling a snake as he preaches to his congregation.

Quote:

While holding the creature aloft, it snaps it jaw at the preacher's ear - causing blood to splatter down his light-blue shirt.

Unconcerned, Pastor Coots continues his speech, telling the members attending the service to: 'Keep playing' and 'I'm not worried at all. God's a healer, I'm not worried'.

Yet it is soon apparent that Pastor Coots is becoming increasingly affected by the snake's bite as blood rushes down his face - no matter how many times he wipes it away with a cloth.

Soon he is choking and has to be carried out of the church by its members.

He was taken to hospital where doctors told him he could have been 'killed' after the snake came close to severing the temporal artery.

Yet he has now reportedly started re-evaluate his life in the wake of this incident.

I've never understood people like this. The video of the snake strike is at the link above. I couldn't bring it in.

Attacked? My ass. Terrible writing and hopefully next time the snake bites him in the balls so he has no progeny.

Yeah, I'd fully expect to get bitten if I handled a rattlesnake in that manner, alas, I'm not that stupid.

Based on the coloring pattern and the church being located in Kentucky it would appear so but I'm sure one the resident experts will weigh in.

Yes, Timber. Lucky for him it's a local snake. If you were to be bit in the head by a timber from eastern Texas/western Louisiana or north Florida you're dead.

Things have been slow so here are a few stolen from the neighborhood page. I found a rat snake skin about 12" long in the front yard but no snake. Sasche/Wylie Texas. Headless snake lost to a lawnmower.

We had a 4 foot rat snake in the Library yesterday. Librarian was on the top of her desk. Course, "snake man" as I'm known at school had to take care of the snake. He was totally chill, of course.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

All rat snakes except for your last one, which is a Texas garter snake. They are getting increasingly rare and TPWD is looking into their conservation status . Neat find.

Rat snakes are one of the few native snakes that I've never seen in person. I must be doing it wrong.

Go in the woods and look in a tree. You'll eventually find one. Mostly being harassed by birds.

Lots of snakes yesterday while mowing in Humble, but no phone with me. 2 Brown Snakes (one was 8-10 inches, one was 3 inches) and one 8-inch hognose.

I think building a pool has brought more snakes into our yard.

Can I get help ID'ing this guy? Saw him on a walk this nothing near a pond after the hard rain in North Dallas last night. Young one, about 8 inches, and he was already dead.

I think we have a yellowbelly water snake in that pond, and the markings kinda match some pics I've seen.

was it a diamondback or timber rattler? Ive been going to parts of Fayette and Colorado county for 30 years and never seen or heard of anyone seeing a rattlesnake around there. looks like herpsoftexas only has records of timber sightings in that area.

12fmane will confirm but I would bet Timber. I asked the same question when ran across some buddies that were showing me some pics of a big timber around Sheridan and think he mentioned they go as far south as Victoria.

I think the Diamondbacks are still a little closer to the coast in that area but may overlap some down near Victoria... good question and I am curious of the answer.
