I may be wrong, but I don't believe that subspecies of rat snake (gray rat snake) ranges into Texas. I'm pretty sure it is only found as far west as the Mississippi river.

I am most likely wrong in my identification, but this pic the closest resemblance to the what I saw. I was probably 8' away and saw it for about 3 seconds as it disappeared from the concrete bike path into the brush. If could change one thing in the pic, it would be to thin out the darker areas. The head shape and lighter color is spot on, but the darker areas were not that pronounced.

Glossy snake perhaps?

Just a young ratsnake I would think. They can be more or less gray.

Nothing to report but a copperhead capture every other night or so. Well I do have one interesting thing. I have a pet rat snake. Or at least, a resident rat snake. I have seen the same rat snake almost every night in the same area of the back of my house at about the same time. He/she has adopted an interesting behavior, too.

The last 3 nights, it has slithered into a toad or gopher hole along the edge of my foundation and sits there with only about 6" of its head and neck sticking out of the hole like a root or branch, just waiting perfectly still. I walk by and it just sits there, primed to lurch out I presume, waiting for something to wander by. Never seen one wait in a hole entrance to ambush prey.

guy at work had a snake hanging around his back porch. He snapped a picture and brought it to me to ask if it was "poisonous" or not

It was a YBWS, showed him the lines on the jaw and he said "ok just wanted to check with you first, I'll let it live"

Would think after all that elaborate set-up that he would show up more prepared to collect his snake!

Doesn't everybody go out to collect 8' long snakes barefoot and armed with a 9" twig to keep them from biting you?

Found this guy on the running trail around Buffalo Bayou right out side downtown Houston.

Is it a YB or DB WS?

Thanks Badace..... I couldn't get it on mobile.... had to finally get on my laptop

Posting help

It is a YBWS... some might call that one a blotched water snake, but when it gets older it will likely look like a YBWS. They are the same species N. Erythrogaster.

Spent the evening out at Bracken Cave watching the bats emerge. Had two large coachwhips hunting bats in the open most of the night, and a brief appearance by a western diamondback. I haven't looked at the camera yet to see how any pics turned out, but I will look and post a few up tomorrow afternoon.

I would call it a blotch based on the pronounced blotching, but tomato, toe-mato

You and me both. I don't go looking for them like you but I normally see a decent amount of water snakes, moccasins, and a few copperheads out fishing during the spring/summer here in the Memphis area but this year its been few and far between.

That timber rattler sighting from PA I posted a few pages back from early July was the only significant sighting I've had this year.

we are normally good for 5-10 Copperhead sightings around our place in GA, but none this year.

Played golf down in Lajitas yesterday and found this one crossing the cart path. Not the best picture with the sun being at that angle, but he got into the bushes before I could reposition.

It was 3-4' long and a pretty quick mover. I figured it was some kind of racer but I'm having trouble finding a close match in the field guide.
