Copperheads often show up in pairs. When you see one, keep looking around the next day or two for the other one...

Clipped this guy with the lawnmower and found him the next day. Not sure what it is, but guessing a rat snake.

This picture of a rattlesnake on padre island near Corpus was posted in the San Antonio paper. They circled it to show you where it is.

Great camo job, it really does look like sand.

They missed the mark just a little bit. Here it is.... oh, wait... that's my footprint. He's somewhere in there but I am too scared to look

Ok, now that you said that, I think they were trying to show how close they came to stepping on it.

It didn't take him long at all, maybe 2 minutes. My boys, 7 and 9, heard the frog and figured out what was going on.

Western Coachwhip that added a little excitement to a work weekend at the ranch.
This is the first one I've ever been able to catch.

Interesting, I've been bit by a lot of snakes, but never had one raise up and bite me between my knee and nuts. Caught me a little off guard, but made it easy to grab him. He was one pissed off camper. CPR

Got a little rattler in the central OK wild for you Ags...

Was out, in broad daylight, this morning with BiL at his land. 40 acres, a good 15 miles from closest people between Edmond and Tulsa. Just out having some ballistic therapy and we stumbled upon...

Looks like about 10 rattlers.

12f or anyone else - is it still pretty accepted that a rattle means a shed a year?
Edit to add more pics.

No, not really. Rattles wear out; sheds are based on age.

Oh man, she's a beaut! We sat and watched her play around the oak for a good half hour. We had his 2 little ones with us so this ended our day but I didn't mind.

Wow! Beautiful snake. Are timbers usually that light in color? Thought they were in most cases darker in color?

Rattles are somewhat reliable but wild snakes lose segments frequently. I've seen adult diamondbacks with only one segment. Size is probably a better indicator of age.

That is one amazing snake.

Definitely the lightest one I've seen. It was overcast and about 72* at the time. Windy. He has that fancy camera on his iphone x and the portrait mode really paid off with zoom.

Thanks so much 12f! I'm calling her she since she's so beautiful, ps. I know nothing for sure but when she finally went away from us she was every bit of four foot.

I thought sheds were based on size, and size was based on food availability.

Grew up in the Panhandle during the 70's-80's

If it was in the water and black with a diamond head it was a Cottonmouth.

If it had a diamond head and tan and brown, Water Moccasin.

Everyone of them died.

No clue until I came down to A&M that they were the same snake. And I doubt growing up we ever killed a venomous snake. I am guessing they were all water snakes. Because none of them had the bodies that I now recognize from these threads as a Cottonmouth.

These threads these last few years have taught me a lot about what not to kill. Though we never killed any water snakes with small heads, and never killed any other snake but a rattlesnake.

And another thing I have learned here is that Prairie Rattlers must be the most aggressive venomous snake in Texas. I have been chased by them in foot high grass and their head coming at me above the grass many times. But I never knew anyone to be bitten by a Prairie Rattler while sober.

These threads have done more for the conservation of herps in Texas than any other program I have ever seen. Please keep it going.

Not to mention cottonmouths don't range anywhere close the the panhandle.
