Yikes! Juvenile Copperhead and in a very bad place. Keep us updated on your friend, although he should be fine minus the medical bill and swelling.

You know the more I stare at it, the more it looks like it might be a longnose snake. I can almost make out some lighter patches in the black which is their calling card. The pattern would be different than what I've seen before in Texas for either snake species.

I don't think I saw orange. I took the pic last fall. I mostly remember how crisp the colors were and that it reminded me of a coral snake without the red. I've sought out snakes since I was a kid and have never seen one like this guy. Shovel nose was my first guess after a google search but the range for that color didn't seem to match up. Wish I had a side profile of the head now...

This is definitely a "phone a friend" 12fmane edition.

Don't worry about it, it's a good pic. I'm sure 12f will nail it down for you next time he checks the thread. I'm leaning longnose now but honestly I could see it being either.

More typical specimens of longnose snakes have a lot of red/orange in them and the Texas versions of common kingsnakes tend to be much more speckled

I entertained the idea, but I don't think it is given location. I might be wrong though.

I highly doubt that one. If it were an escaped pet it would much more likely be an escaped california king as they are much more readily available in the pet trade, but I'm getting more and more convinced it is a long-nosed snake as I compare it to some pics of low red specimens online.

Meet General Cornwallis! He's about 3 weeks ago. As you can tell, the kids are scared spitless of him. And yes, we plan to mock him mercilessly every July 4th.

Stumped on this ID. Helped him off the road after taking pics. Llano Co.

Sill making my way through the last couple dozens posts, but if this wasn't answered already it is a longnosed snake. They usually have more red and pattern. Probably a young one? Young longnose have less pattern and red.

It's where I finally landed, but it caused a lot of consternation on my part... I wasn't sure from the get-go whether it was a weirdly patterned common kingsnake that had a more western pattern or a longnose with very little red on the body and more black on the head.

I think Tx4guns had it straight off though.

It was only about 14" long. I'm assuming that would be young for that snake. Thanks for the help

That rock rattlesnake is beautiful, they're great. I'm just going crazy because I'm in a ton of herp groups on Facebook and it's been posted a million times and people are claiming its evolved to blend in with concrete in the cities or that its albino /facepalm. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that people dont know there are different species of rattlesnakes.

Lol. I know how you feel. I'm not an expert by any means but I've had a lot of snakes and want to roll my eyes when I hear some people talking. What area are those rattlers located?

SW US (New Mexico, Arizona, west Texas) and parts of Mexico

My coworkers just tried to draw a triangle head on a coral snake on the whiteboard because all venomous snakes have viper heads. I had to walk away.

And Bobcat, I'm going to cut you for egging them on.

Made a trip out to the lease this weekend...

And while we were there found these two natural bee hives, the larger one wasn't a worry it was in the open the smaller one I stumbled on and nearly put my head on when dragging some brush out while clearing right of ways.

Very cool.

But I have to smile at "we didn't know these existed until last week...but mining is totally going to kill them all."
