We have western diamondbacks in southeast TX? I didn't realize that. Is this range map incorrect?

Every map I have found has kind of had the same pattern in Texas. This one is from herpsoftexas.org.

The herd of rabbits and mice that migrated back in after the erosion fences were put in and plants grew back. They were always there, just way more than I have seen it since then.

That snake was from near Freeport. I'd say that's SE or at least close enough. That's a decent map.

From that grainy pic, the head looked solid cottonmouth to me. Black stripe above the eye and all.

+1

I can't see it all that well on my phone but it doesn't look like a hognose to me

In the 2nd pic, if you zoom in, you can see the upturned nose.

Well crap. Here's another pic that may not be so grainy. It slithered off into the bushes on the top right as I walked closer.

Definitely still a hognose. Not a cottonmouth. Whatever 12f mane calls it is the right answer. I don't think I've ever seen him wrong once on this thread in years.

This one was definitely tough but the head shape and somewhat visible nose give it away.

Speaking of Galveston rattlesnakes, I don't have pics because it was over 10 years ago but I've come across western diamondbacks at the kayak launch on Eckert Bayou off Settegast & 11 Mile Road: https://goo.gl/maps/5xZJ9VioRDr

I pulled this picture from the Texas Kayak Fisherman boards and it's around San Luis Pass in 2007'ish:

I fish eckerts a lot around the tubes and am always on the look out. Plenty of snakes in that area and in Spanish Grant.

Found a 2 foot or so hognose in one of my snake traps this afternoon. Snake was not happy, but gave me a classic hooded cobra hissing show followed by writhing upside down fake death, and trying to make a break for it when the coast looked clear.

Got some pics I'll post later. You can actually make out the bigger "venom teeth" that the hognose has about halfway back on its upper jaw.

Those are teeth the hognoses use secure their prey. They don't actually emit any "venom". They have modified saliva that counteracts the effects of toad poison, making them one of the few animals that can consume toads.

I can probably get a couple pictures of their teeth when I feed my Eastern and western hogs today.

I know the rules of this thread, but if I see a cobra just out here in Texas, that sucker ain't going to survive the experience... that or I'll be running away like a scared little girl.

We seem to have an inordinate number of scared little girls on the OB.
