Nortex97: It will be interesting to see whether Trump's tariffs, juvenile insults, intentional bad relations, lies, and the totally unnecessary economically destructive trade war Trump started with with our longtime Canadian friends and our closest national ally Canada has much effect on how American voters vote in November in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Wisconsin, and the other Northern states that trade heavily with Canada.
Quote:
Americans don't think much of Canada literally. We didn't have to, because for a long time Canadians were just pleasant, sturdy, and trustworthy neighbors who were different from us but shared enough in common that we managed to share the longest demilitarized border in the world. Canadians don't want to be Americans, and that's OK. It's silly, because everybody should want to be Americans, but it's all right. We didn't take offense. We'd have to be thinking about them to take offense, and we weren't. It's nice to have a neighbor you don't really have to think about, except when you need to borrow sugar.
But when we did think about them, they used to be kind of amusing. Now they're actively annoying. And their obsessive loathing of the United States has morphed from a vaguely tiresome affectation into something genuinely grating. They are ripping us off on defense and trade, they are failing to back us up around the world, and they have become a petty dictatorship. They are still funny, but the Ralph Wiggum of nations is longer ha-ha funny.
They thought about us a lot, and you can't really blame them. We're economically successful, stubbornly free, and masculine all the things that Canada either never was or no longer is. Canada has been taken over by the faculty-lounge left. It's less a country than a giant, freezing college campus where the government will literally destroy your life if you do something like point out obvious truths about how a man is not a woman or that there was a giant scam involving allegedly dead Indian children oh wait, we're supposed to call them "First Peoples." Of course, they have enshrined collective guilt over taming their vast lands as their national ideology. They despise us, but they also despise themselves. We have a glorious Constitution, and they have an endless land acknowledgment.
...
Trump should keep the pressure on Canada. Canada needs to do its share for our mutual defense. It's going to have to spend more money and put more people in uniform. That's just the way it is. And it's not going to have the benefit of the postwar era's uneven trade-deal regime that it has been relying on for decades. America has a right to equal trade treatment, and it's going to use its economic power to enforce it no matter how many high-pitched screams issue from our garbage foreign-policy establishment and the foreigners whose gravy train has been derailed. Finally, America is a nation based on respecting the rights God gave every human being; if you want to be a close ally, you've got to respect those too, and throwing people in jail for observing that someone with a ***** is not a woman disqualifies your country as a friend.
So, Canada, we're right here ready to be close allies again when you get your act together. But you need to get your act together first. There's some real talk for ya, eh?
Canadians are outraged on the wrong part of the US-Venezuela annoucement.

A small % in Alberta have been doing that for decades for the same reason a minority of whiny far-right folks in Texas have been talking about secession from the USA for decades. Really?? Because their GDP per capita has been plummeting against ours for a decade now. Other economic stats have been posted in this thread as well showing they are a declining country. And this was all before Trump and Carney got into a fight.
Why do you think Alberta has taken the extreme measure of even talking about secession? That doesn't happen unless your country is ****ting the bed.

Canada is investing in itself and moving forward on dozens of projects that will have huge returns economically. Carney said last week that the trade war had woken Canada up and made it take a hard look at itself and candidly assess what it needed to do to get back on track. He's right.

A serious capitalist would work with its capitalist neighbor to come up with reasonable cross-border tariffs that are as close to neutral as possible, not climb into bed with the world's largest communist dictatorship known mostly for creating vassals out of its economic partners.

Oh right. It was us. We did that.
Led by the anti-union "greed-is-good" mantra of the GOP and our "wonderful patriots" who run Wall Street, we Americans closed and mothballed our manufacturing and industrial base.
We laid off millions of hard-working Americans, devastated many of our towns and cities that were doing our manufacturing, and we got into bed with Communist China and other cheap labor countries to do all that work for us. And now they're way ahead of us in manufacturing.
In contrast to what our country stupidly did, Canada kept most of its domestic industrial operations and raw materials production and manufacturing base. It kept those parts of its economy operating and producing instead of moving them to China.
By every economic % ratio and trade measurement, China has been a far smaller import and export trade partner to Canada than China has been to the USA.
Not even close. But keep telling yourself the ludicrous lies and false narratives about tariffs and trade that Trump and his faction have palmed off on their gullible followers.txags92 said:DeschutesAg said:txags92 said:DeschutesAg said:YouBet said:

Yes, we did that in the past, and now we are undoing it and bringing the manufacturing back home. Part of that means making sure that our trading partners give our exports a fair shake in their markets like we do in ours. Carney has turned away from the US and is embracing new trade with China instead and making all the same mistakes the US did decades ago. He isn't doing it because China will be a better market and trading partner than the US is. He is doing it because orange man bad and it is popular politically to "stand up to Trump" instead of admitting that their own tariffs towards a number of our exports have been abusive and protectionist until now.

Collins has always been that way during election season. That is her normal MO because the state is so split.
