Canada announced restrictions on Huawei in May 2022 to protect national security. As reported by NPR, "Canada aligns with Five Eyes alliance members (U.S., U.K., Australia, New Zealand)."

5G Gear: Telecom companies had to remove Huawei 5G gear by June 2024.

4G Gear: Companies must remove existing 4G gear by the end of 2027.

No Payback: The Canadian government did not offer financial help to remove the parts.

Has the above changed?

Does it matter? No on trusts Canada or China to follow the rules.

Nortex: No offense, but Kurt Schlichter is regarded by most Americans as a loon. Have any of the dire predictions made by Kurt and other far-right twitter propagandists ever come true? They constantly post narratives that predict doom and disaster and failure for Canada. Yet Canada keeps making liars out of them. I watched a podcast yesterday that had several Establishment Republicans from northern U.S. states talking about how insane it is for Trump and his Administration and his faction of the GOP to attack the country that has been our best ally and biggest trade partner.

Really?? Because their GDP per capita has been plummeting against ours for a decade now. Other economic stats have been posted in this thread as well showing they are a declining country. And this was all before Trump and Carney got into a fight.

Why do you think Alberta has taken the extreme measure of even talking about secession? That doesn't happen unless your country is ****ting the bed.

A small % in Alberta have been doing that for decades for the same reason a minority of whiny far-right folks in Texas have been talking about secession from the USA for decades. They think the oil and gas will make them rich and tax-free like Saudi Arabia and the UAE. It's a ludicrous pipe dream, but typical of the far-right mentality, which is just as disconnected from the real world as the far-left. The Horseshoe paradigm is real.

The percentage is between 20%-30% of Albertans. It's not some fringe minority...

Possibly so but that doesn't change the economic facts on the ground.

Canada has steadily gotten worse since Trudeau took the reins and now Carney.

Carney is nothing like Trudeau. He is a serious capitalist.

Canada is investing in itself and moving forward on dozens of projects that will have huge returns economically. Carney said last week that the trade war had woken Canada up and made it take a hard look at itself and candidly assess what it needed to do to get back on track. He's right.

Since he became PM, Canada went into recession and now has GDP growth of around 0.3% with 6.6% unemployment.

He's kicking ass and taking names.

Unfortunately, they're Canadian asses and he wants the names in order to punish them later...

God gave modern Canadians the opportunity to play life on easy mode.

A massive, gorgeous country stuffed to the gills with valuable resources.

A small, highly educated population.

A heritage of Christian values and a liberty oriented political system.

A compatible neighbor who also happens to be the global superpower to protect you and trade goods with.

Literally the easiest layup of all time.

So they took that liberty and squandered it in a way that would make even the prodigal son blush.

Truly staggering when you think about it.

So here is a fun fact. In order to get stuff from the Atlantic ocean to the Great Lakes, you have to go through the St. Lawrence Seaway. There are 15 locks in that Seaway and 13 of them are 100% on Canadian soil. If you think Trump is having a blast trying to get Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, just wait until he really pisses Canada off and they just close those locks to all traffic except those freighters going to Canadian ports.

But even if they don't do that, here is another fun fact. There are quite a few Senate Battleground States in the upcoming 2026 midterms. Here is a list of States where the GOP is in tight races to keep the Senate:
Maine, Iowa, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota, South Dakota, Kansas, North Carolina, Georgia, Texas, Alaska

Guess what? All of those States have Canada as their #1 or #2 trading partner. Nine of them have Canada as their majority trading partners. Do you think this makes the businesses in those states support Republicans more or less in the upcoming midterms?

Remember Trump letting low cost foreign beef (300,000 metric tons from Mexico and Brazil) be imported and mixed into the US ground beef supply? What do these states from the above list have in common?
Iowa, Texas, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas

66% of all domestic beef in feed lots in the US are in these five Senate Battleground States. You know who is screaming mad about this (other than all domestic cattle ranchers)? So far every Republican Senator running for Re-election in the major beef producing States (notably except Ken Paxton whose political lifeline depends on never crossing Trump).

If Democrats could invent someone to drive down Republican voter support and enthusiasm before the midterms, that person would look a lot like Trump right now. He is doing everything he can to toss the Senate to the Democrats.

The main market for a lot of that shipping is the Toronto area, Canada's largest metro area.

As you noted, 13 locks are Canadian. But TWO are American. Can you guess what would happen to THOSE 2 locks if the Canadian's did that?

Looks like Toronto is ****ed. Oh...and it will **** the second-largest metro area in Canada, Montreal, if they can't ship their goods to the Toronto area.

And even if the Dems win the Senate and House...uh oh...Trump is STILL POTUS. How do you think he'll respond to Canada after they do that?

The good idea fairy is a little drunk tonight it appears...

ETA: Even better...the VAST majority of all the shipping comes from the Gulf of America up the Mississippi. Would suck for Canada if that was blockaded.

They are actually doing fine. Their 2nd qtr was above 3% in GDP growth. Trump has been deliberately trying to hurt their economy. It is a mystery as to why. Canadians have understandably responded by making a number of changes in infrastructure which will result in diversifying their foreign trade markets. Those projects will take awhile to do. When its done, it will result in higher costs and higher prices to our own industries that have gotten used to paying below-market prices for materials from Canada for decades.

Yep, around 46%, but less among voting age of course.

Most don't know the real history of how/why Canada 'got' a disproportionately large auto industry in the first place. Tariffs.

Quote:

Why did the auto industry build facilities in Canada?

Glad you asked.

Ford and Mclaughin/GM initially built plants in 1904 and 1907 respectively to avoid...get this now... HIGH IMPORT TARIFFS that the canadian government placed on American autos.

1904. High import tarrifs. From Canada. On American vehicles.

Canada became a large producer of vehicles even though the plants were inefficient.

Because of HIGH TARIFFS on American goods.

The auto pact of 1965 did away with tarrifs but forced the companies to maintain a certain level of production to be duty free.

In the 80's overseas automakers built plants in Canada to avoid export restrictions and avoid trade barriers. Much like Canada allowing China to dump plywood in their country to avoid similar conditions.
They did not build these plants to serve the Canadian market, they built them to flood the American market.

Canadian tarrif and trade policy has a long history of being anti American.

Yep.

I worked for Bell Helicopter back in the day. They have a lot of stuff up in Canada. Mainly for economic reasons - and I'm not talking about it being cheaper to build it there.

The tariffs and all the other cross-border border bull**** just made financial sense to the bean counters...

But the guy he is interviewing, Jason Kinney, is none of those things. He is pro "good policy" and anti "bad policy". That is his political ideology. Most intelligent people with real world experience are aware that some of Trump's policies are good, and some of his policies are stupid and bad.

Jason Kinney (and his former boss Stephen Harper) are very knowledgeable, intelligent, competent, and experienced in domestic and international policy. In the latter part of the interview, Kinney talks about immigration policy. He makes some interesting points.

Apparently Canadian voters have a lot of self-belief in their own toughness and ability to deal with the temporary headwinds caused by Trump's tariffs. In 3 elections yesterday they voted their support for what Carney is doing.

Big investment firms agree:

Quote:

Enbridge Inc. has signed a deal with KKR and Apollo to form a joint venture to help fund the expansion of its Westcoast natural gas pipeline system.

Under the agreement, KKR and Apollo will invest about $2.7 billion to fund the Aspen Point and Sunrise expansion programs, including $700 million to be paid in cash to Enbridge at closing.

Also in the news: The GOP is concerned news coverage of more of Trump's lies and Trump's bizarre claims about his unpopular trade war and economically destructive tariffs on Canadian trade will be reported and cost the Rs votes in the November election, so the Republican Party has refused to give press accreditation to the CBC for news coverage of Trump's coming midterm GOP convention. GOP campaign strategists are acutely aware most U.S. voters disapprove of Trump's Canada tariffs and trade war on Canada.

Cool.

In MORE THAN 3 elections in the US, Democratic voters voted for DSA candidates.

I assume you think that's good, just like you think the Canucks voting the way they did.

Just got back from a trip with a couple of overnight layovers in Montreal. Two cab rides to and from the airport into downtown each layover.

Out of 4 cab rides, I didn't have an english speaking driver. A couple did speak french, but the other two were speaking something radically different. Every cab driver I saw at the airport was either middle eastern or African descent and current culture.

They were all ignoring direction by airport traffic officials and had their cabs parked at unloading zones with clear signage of no loitering. We had to double park to unload our bags.

Montreal reminds me of London; whereas London is no longer predominantly populated by the English, and Montreal is no longer predominantly populated by the Canadians.

Exactly. Demanding fair/reciprocal treatment, and agreement not to trans-ship Chinese crap aluminum/steel/plywood etc, seems, well, fair. That's not mean or cruel.

And regarding memes, rudeness, language, jokes etc. Carney has had plenty of harsh words to say himself. He's not really anything close to polite and honest, imho.

And he created the trade war/quit the deal because Maia Johnson, Obama and China told him to. This is the Carney trade war, plain and simple.

Mark Carney has appointed Dominic Barton to lead Canada's investment strategies.

Dominic Barton was a managing partner at McKinsey and Co.

He was the chair of McKinsey in Asia, headquartered out of Shanghai.

McKinsey and Barton were instrumental in expanding China's Belt and Road Initiative at a global scale.

McKinsey was fined $1.5 Billion in the United States for "turbocharging" the opioid epidemic via their consulting work for Purdue Pharma.

Fentanyl has become a primary weapon of war in China's Unrestricted Warfare doctrine.

Barton was Ambassador to China under Justin Trudeau.

And now we know exactly who Carney and the Liberals are working for.

Canada is going kamikaze.

Always track who people surround themselves with. It's quite revealing.

Some posters are like Obama. They believe the Us should be brought down a few pegs. They believe we are the world's lone superpower because of imperialism and oppression. They believe favoring other countries over America is a good thing because America never was that great to begin with, and we didn't build that.

It's a truly twisted perspective that ignores the exceptionalism of our founding and the tremendous blessings God has bestowed upon us.

Our responsibility is to maintain what we have inherited and to make the nation even greater, not to break the country up and give it away piece by piece, which is what Hussein and his worshippers think should be done. They would happily subjugated us to China and Russia.

We had a good thing, Canada.

A quiet arrangement.

You kept watch up north, didn't make noise, didn't screw around.

We covered the heavy lifting.

You backed us up, built a few ships, some icebreakers, flew the flag at NATO, pretended to be a country that gave a damn. We saluted your officers and let you slide when things got bloody.

We asked for help and you sent 26,000 to places like Korea while we sent 1.1 million. We suffered more deaths than your total deployed forces and that was ok because you were nice and you had to remain focused on keeping the north defended.

Now look at you.

Your navy's a joke, less combat power than a drug cartel with Zodiac boats.

Your GDP's circling the drain, and instead of fixing it, you're too busy playing dress-up at climate conferences and pretending that TikTok diplomacy will stop a hypersonic missile. You have 3 rusty submarines in commission and a few at the Edmonton Mall plus a few small frigates. You have more generals and Admiral than working tanks. You spend less per GDP on defense than Albania or Slovakia.

You won't spend.
You won't build.
You won't fight.

You have the longest arctic shoreline in the world but most of your unimpressive "icebreaker" fleet are small patrol craft that would be crushed in heavy ice.

You are a Pacific Nation but couldn't defend your selves from the Chinese fishing fleet let alone their Coast Guard or Navy.

But you'll sure as hell talk.

Talk about "shared values" while you freeload off the defense umbrella we pay for. Talk about "peacekeeping" while China cuts your undersea cables and Russia maps your Arctic. Talk about how important your role is in NATO knowing full well your only authority is the billets, joint exercises and training we give you,

You think this continent defends itself?

You think because you're polite and bilingual and serve maple syrup at the G7, you get a pass?

You think getting angry about memes will protect you from ismalocommies already inside the gate?

That someone else, USA, will show up when it gets hot in the Arctic or North Pacific?

Not gonna happen because we don't have a single icebreaker that hasn't suffered a catastrophic loss and no longer have a fleet capable of evacuating our bases in the Pacific let alone defending your coast.

You had a good thing.
You could've been useful.
You chose to be a burden.
And when the day comes, and it will come, don't expect a call back.

We're done babysitting the unarmed.

You had two jobs. Two. Stop the spread of Communism by nodding along with our anti-marxist rhetoric and defending your own coast. You have failed miserably at both.

And now you're no longer even nice. You roll over to china and waive fentanyl through our border while booing the American flag and banning our products.

Then when we call out the truth you start pulling on our sympathy strings with posts talking about what great allies you were in WW2 and Korea.

I love and admire all you lost and all Canadians who served but that was a long time ago and I absolutely zero respect for today's Royal Canadian "navy" or your politicians.

We had a great thing going Canada and paid you trillions in sweetheart deals like NAFTA, open borders and all our best intel vis five eyes.

All you had to do was be nice, not elect commies and patrol your own coast in return. You blew it.
In a world when you can be anything, be the person that ends the meeting early.

Canada's population is 44% first or second generation (either foreign born or having at least 1 foreign born parent). They have no shared values. They have, quite literally, half a country. There is nothing they can do to reverse that course short of a martial take over they couldn't execute in their wildest dreams. Canada will not be in it's current form for much longer. This includes 72% plus of the residents of Toronto and Vancouver.
