Lets start with the number of troops sent to conflicts. As their population is somewhat less than ours they ended up sending more per capita and dying at a higher rate per capita during WW2.
Navy less combat power than zodiac boats? Hyperbole much?
3 rusty submarines? wrong again
Icebreakers are small patrol craft? wrong again
We could go on line by line but my point is proven.

Whoever wrote that obviously doesn't like Canada. That is fine, everyone is entitled to an opinion, but there is no need to make stuff up.

Canada currently operates four aging Victoria-class diesel-electric submarines, though typically only one is fully operational at any given time due to heavy maintenance requirements. [1, 2, 3]

You're right...

It's FOUR rusty submarines...

Quote:

Canada is looking to spend tens of billions of dollars on a contract with German shipbuilder ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) to replace Canada's aging fleet of submarines with up to a dozen new vessels.

Prime Minister Mark Carney called it the biggest defence procurement project in Canada's history.

$100B for a dozen new submarines. Another sign Carney is reversing Trudeau's 10 years of weaknesses.

Y'all can criticize him all you want, but he sure seems to be providing rational, strong, common sense leadership and pushing through real-world policies that will greatly strengthen Canada on defense, trade, economy, manufacturing, and infrastructure.

Quote:

Carney met with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy one day after announcing his submarine plan.

Carney reiterated Canada's opposition to Russia's ongoing invasion.

Canada is an unserious country that cannot defend itself. They've relied on us and now they'll snuggle up to China. They're helpless and feckless.

The way I see it is Carney is willing to spend $100B to have an election talking point "Look at me, I'm a tough guy, I bought a bunch of submarines." Yay. Now how about Canada's ice breakers and destroyers and fighters and AA missiles and drones and satellites and ... and ... and ... How about getting some real numbers for military personnel? How about getting defense spending up to NATO obligations?

And that's just Carney's military shortcomings. Try industrial capacity. Try getting immigration under control. Try standing up to as opposed to kow towing to communist China.

Canada used to have a culture and a purpose. Now it is a joke writing itself. And your hero Carney is leading the clown show.

Tell you what. Since you are such a believer in Carney and Canada, why don't you trade in your nasty American dollars for the righteous Canadian version? It will certainly pay big dividends, right?

Replacing your biggest trade partner with no new market, deliberately endangering your most important free trade deal and moving your country from 45% 1st or 2nd generation immigrants to more than 50% within a decade doesn't make your country stronger.

So, they currently have 4 rusty submarines.

But they're "looking to spend billions of dollars" on "up to" 12 new ones.

Canada previously "committed to" spending X% on NATO defense for decades. They did not.

For me, this is a "I'll believe it when I see it actually happen" situation...

On top of an order of up to a dozen submarines, the federal government is also looking to invest in tools like Saab's GlobalEye airborne early warning aircraft to survey Canada's vast Arctic, a significant challenge for the Canadian Armed Forces.

Quote:

Canada has entered into negotiations with Saab to buy its GlobalEye airborne early warning aircraft, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Wednesday.

He revealed the plan at the opening of the annual arms trade show CANSEC in Ottawa.

"With a suite of advanced sensors and mission systems, Saab's GlobalEye will be a key resource for the Canadian Armed Forces to detect and deter threats across the Arctic," Carney told the audience of defence contractors and military officials.

Quote:

The system is built on a Bombardier 6500 executive jet with Saab radar and sensors. The jet is manufactured at the company's plant in Toronto.
Sure looks like they have finally gotten serious about significantly expanding their military capabilities and their national security and defense. But time will tell.

They've always had the work ethic and plenty of manufacturing and engineering and technical talent. Maybe they'll harness it.

CTH which is often long-winded and off course actually does a good job eviscerating Carney about the Carney trade war 4 talking points.
Quote:

Here's the counterpoints:

The Stupid French Language thing. The French language stuff was an ancillary aspect where the Canadian Cultural Police were demanding that all U.S. streaming platforms (YouTube, Netflix etc.) must have search engines using the French language so Canadian users can search for stuff to watch using the French language. A ridiculous issue that was not part of the trade discussion, but Mark Carney saw political value in blowing up the issue.
This is really stupid, because when you buy your hardware (TV, Phone, Computer etc.) it asks you what language or country during set up. If you live in France, you put France. The operating system does the rest. We don't code search engines for French in FRANCE because the OS does it! But Canada was requiring U.S. tech companies (streaming services) to install search features in French [I guess so they can set up the OS in English but get some ancillary feature.] It was a stupid "side paper" in the Intellectual Property sector of the trade discussion.

U.S. Right to Limit Canadian Trade Deals
. This point is exponentially ridiculous for Canada to be upset about because the current USMCA/CUSMA already has that clause. The U.S (or Mexico) can exit the USMCA if Canada enters into a trade agreement with a "non-market" economy, ie China. [USMCA Sec 32:10]
Canada was already in violation of the USMCA/CUSMA when they entered into a trade agreement with China and agreed to import Chinese EVs. This action triggered the U.S. to become more focused on the stuff Canada was going to import; hence, the renewed emphasis on the clause.
This is critical. It's not an ancillary issue. The Carney administration had requested "Fortress North America" a synergetic alignment of U.S-Canada trade principles. Canada claimed they wanted a united North American continent against the world on trade. Therefore, this talk of Canada being upset about joint collaboration and agreement on trade agreements with third countries, a point brought up repeatedly by Carney just doesn't make sense.

U.S. tariffs on Canadian "heavy use trucks". This is not the "auto sector" despite Canada trying to make heavy duty trucks part of it. These tariffs are on industrial trucks, farm equipment, heavy trucks and semi-trucks. The U.S. said no, these are not autos and auto tariffs do not apply.
The reason is simple. Tractors, heavy industrial trucks, big rigs assembled/built in Canada are compromised when built in Canada. Why? Because they are full of cheap Chinese component goods and parts that wear out quickly. The U.S. wants two things on this issue. Either: (1) Make heavy industrial trucks in the USA, or (2) stop using cheap Chinese component parts. Failing to do so retains tariffs.

Yes. End USMCA. More at the link.

Shooting the messenger, or ad hominem attacks without any substance as to the arguments/facts presented I believe are silly, but you do you.

I'm not in any way a fan of Poilevre, so feel free to attack him at your leisure without perturbing me in the slightest. He's a powerless fraud and will remain so for the foreseeable future so as far as I can see he's...irrelevant.

Meanwhile, Mark 'forever trade war' Carney is going to hold an investment summit in short order where he will...send more Canadian dollars away.

The Carney trade war of sacrifice by Canadians will continue through at least the Canadian elections, and very likely our own.

Carney coming out today and saying "We'll come to the table when the Americans are ready." is the most hilarious thing this week. Hey I won the by elections now I want my deal. I hope they just drop a notice of non-renewal on USMCA on their desk and say since you walked away from a done deal, let's start at the beginning.

The capital flight will be insane. My company is actively encouraging suppliers to decouple from Canada where and when possible because of the risk.

This

Carney got his elbows up theater for the by elections. But of course Obama and the Dems are pressuring Carney not to make a deal until after the midterms in the hopes that they can win a majority and then try to take credit for it. But that's risky for him because despite certain CCP ops on here trying to convince us that Canada will be the next world super power under Carney, they can see the real and actual figures and know that their economy full of moochers and constrained by watermelon communists can't sustain a protracted trade war and no matter who wins the midterms, Trump is still president for another 3 years.

They opposed Trudeau and criticized him objectively and fairly. Justin was a numbskull idiot.

They also both expressed strong support for what Carney is doing. Carney is a technocrat. His political ideology is sensible real-world pragmatism. Job one: fix things, build things, and strengthen Canada. It makes no sense to me why you and nortex and awk think that is a bad thing. But everyone is entitled to an opinion.

I'm don't think that is a bad thing and if he's actually trying to bolster their defense then that's great. He has a lot of work to do to recover from Trudeau's clown world leadership.

My only argument against you on this whole deal is you ignoring the historical realities and shenanigans that Canada has been doing with these trade deals regardless of Carney's involvement prior to his actual leadership.

It's already been documented by numerous sources including Ambassador Greer who is obviously in the weeds of this and has shared quite a bit of insight on this. Unfortunately, his role is usually esoteric for mainstream media, so you have to dig for his commentary and interviews which are highly enlightening. He's also pretty widely respected by most people in that world regardless of party.

This isn't 100% Trump bluster causing all of this discord, but you seem to go all-in on Trump or Republicans being 100% at fault for certain things - this and our debt, notably. It's just nonsensical and false.

For the love of God, please get off of Canada's pole and stop ignoring the blindingly obvious that Canada has been in open defiance of the USMCA agreement for years now and allowing itself to be Chinas dumping ground to skirt our sanctions and getting called out for it is not "an attack on their sovereignty" because they agreed not to do that and that their partners are allowed to have a say in it

My favorite part of this thread is the guy gaslighting us aboot Canada while never actually responding to any of the financial realities posted here. Its all unicorns and rainbows, but never what's really happening there.

Heres an ai summary of there situation:

Canada is in rough shape economically: unemployment is still high, wages are not fully keeping up with prices, and inflation remains above target. The recent GDP rebound looks more like a temporary bounce than proof of a strong recovery, especially with tariff and energy-price risks hanging over the country.[1][2][3]

Housing is worse: home ownership is out of reach for many, rents are punishing, and Canada is not building nearly enough housing to restore affordability. Starts are slowing when they need to rise sharply, while many mortgage holders still face higher payments at renewal.[4][5]

**Bottom line:** Canada is not collapsing, but it is becoming poorer, less affordable, and harder to live in for ordinary working people.

Job one: fix things, build things, and strengthen Canada. It makes no sense to me why you and nortex and awk think that is a bad thing. But everyone is entitled to an opinion.

Ideologically neutral technocrats who just wanted to do things with a sensible real world pragmatism are who got the US deeply in bed with China in all our critical supply chains and killed off a huge chunk of our domestic manufacturing capabilities decades ago. We finally unleashed ourselves from them and are clawing back our domestic industries bit by bit. Meanwhile, Canada is opening the door and inviting China in complete with putting Chinese puppets in key roles in the government. All the things China does when they start preparing a vassal state for their Belt and Road initiatives.

Also see Europe. They let a technocrat bureaucracy run things from Brussels and did all of the same stupid **** but worse.

I don't understand why y'all are triggered by Canada talking trade deals with China when your guy Trump went on a trade mission to China and took a planeload full of our top U.S. billionaire oligarch business titans with him.

You Trumpers were fine with that. Trump kowtowed to Xi for 3 days, and iirc Trump subsequently boasted about all the deals they made and China investment money the trip secured.

Before Trump stupidly began imposing high tariffs on Canada and berating and threatening Canada's sovereignty, Canada was our biggest export market and our biggest buyer of U.S. goods. They weren't actively seeking to massively increase their trade with the Pacific Rim and Europe and Australia and India. Now they are. Who caused that?

I wasn't and you can find posts on here by me stating as such. Above I was merely pointing out the idiocy of Brussels which you can see in all of their horrific economic stats.

Again, I'm just pointing out your ongoing extreme bias of not acknowledging the reality of both sides of this trade dispute. It's simply baffling.

Despite certain posters claiming Canada is the next major super power under Dear Leader Carney, the truth is a huge number of young educated Canadians flee to the US every year because there is no opportunity in Canada. Only high taxes, high prices and an economy intent on killing itself.

So they're doing what all good communists do. Build walls to keep people IN
