Yeah I mean it's all fine, and it's easy to come up our own theories to explain it, but "everyone hates Hal now" seems like a pretty huge jump from how people (outside of Rushville) treated him earlier in the show. Even the medical examiner talks about how the media love to see an old has been or whatever.

My current head canon is that Hal knew the whole thing smelled fishy at the end. The Manhunter just more or less let itself be shot in the head. He thinks there's more to the story, and rather than try to defend himself, bring up the other aliens involved (which would be pretty easy to prove since one of them blew itself up inside the police station) and draw even more attention to the situation and potentially spook (whatever) into leaving, he decides his best plan is to just lay low, claim fault for everything that happened, let (whatever) think that it's all over and cooled down, etc.

Seems like a pretty long term scheme but if he thinks the guardians themselves are compromised or in danger or something maybe that's the play?

Was Hal's interaction with projection Hal on the water tower discussed? What did they do with that interaction? Update memory, memorialize events, switch places (is that even possible)? If I missed that being discussed, I apologize but I thought that brief scene before the heavy attacks started was something significant… full admission that this is pure speculation as I have no knowledge of green lantern lore

It's not like he was being held in the local jail. They mention he returned to Rushville after he got out of federal prison. Word is definitely going to get out and that scene at the roadside taco stand was enough to show that everyone else in the world likes Hal Jordan, so I'm fairly sure they'd want some kind of explanation for what went down that resulted in him not being Green Lantern and going to prison.

I mean again, it's not THAT big of a deal and it doesn't really necessarily impact the core plot of the show, but for me it would have been nice to see that fallout.

I'm on board that much of this plot now involves either ignoring a lot of inconsistencies or coming up with farfetched reasons which the showriters should be providing themselves. You're dead on about Hal...he's been the Green Lantern, an intergalactic superhero, for 30 years. They've spoken about all of the good he's done, saving the world, bringing in Sinestro, and more. Him ending up in prison for the events of episode 5 deserve an explanation from the show.

Maybe the last two episodes will answer every question and plot inconsistency, but the odds on that are low. I think we have to just settle for this being a show where the messages and themes, combined with cool or funny images, are the priority of the showrunners and writers. A tight plotline is secondary. Plenty of shows are like that and entertaining once you accept that reality.

For example, the majority of the episode titled "The Weenie" contributed nothing to the overall plot and was just a setup for Hal's joke, "Well, I guess we've seen his weenie!".

We just don't know much about the "sentry protocol." Is it actually physical and can interact with its surroundings or is it just a visual projection? Neither time we've seen it does it touch anything, so hard to say.

Though because of this question I did rewatch the scene in the first episode and something caught my attention, 2016 Hal hadn't backed himself up in ten years and the 2026 projection is presumably the same one (same clothes and hair.) So that does seem to indicate that there's something in his head he doesn't want the rest of the Green Lantern Corps or the Guardians to know/be able to access.

I really gotta disagree with that first sentence.

That episode:

Gave the back story of the Manhunters via Sinestro
Made Hal say out loud that John is his replacement
Dangles the idea that if Hal captures the Manhunter, the Guardians will let him stay a lantern
Has Lianna dangle the instant access to becoming GL to John
Exposes who the Manhunter actually is

Also showed how much advanced technology the militia group really has. That failed break-in was needed to establish that they couldn't just smash their way in and end this whole thing before it starts.

I'm 2 episodes late with this comment, but I really loved the water tower being filled with anti-GL smoke.

I exaggerated a little but not much. What I meant was that the show engineered that whole unnecessary scene and the leadup conversation about Disney calling the non-visible parts his park "The Weenie", just for that one joke. All of the relevant info relayed in that particular episode could have been relayed without that scene, and I think it actually does happen outside of that scene. So, just IMO the whole joke and setup for the joke came across as silly and juvenile in a show that wants to be gritty and mature, and a waste of time in a season that only has 8 episodes.

Did anyone else question why Hal and John went to the trouble of making this huge drill construct to tunnel past security, but then still pop up 100 yards away from the actual building they need to break into?

I figured they probably thought the thing extended underground or had some sort of proximity sensors.

Or they didn't want to create a sinkhole underneath a building when the drill vanishes. They had no idea what was inside of it.

Yeah, I mean both of those reasons could be viable reasons. I just hate that the show consistently presents a situation that causes the audience to scratch their head and decide that, "Well, surely there must be some reason this nonsensical thing happened, so anyway let's just move on!". That's what I mean about the writing not being tight. But, I digress. I'll move on.

I do find interesting the idea that real Hal is alive and the body that was killed was a clone. I would love for the last two episodes to reveal a whole new deep-layered scheme by Hal to expose corruption with the Gaurdians.

Didn't they think the Manhunter was in there? With all the technology they knew it had, I'm sure proximity sensors were a good bet.

Drilling that big would have to make some noise and start vibrating the towers and building. This doesn't feel like some crazy plot nonsense.

We need a current temp check on where this board is at on some of the popular theories.

For me "Noah is the manhunter now" is way up there.

There's def something fishy about Noah and I'm leaning towards he's a manhunter.

I think real Hal is dead, but do we have any established rules in the show for how tangible the ring projections are of Hal? How long they can last?

I think the "Guardian" that John was dealing with is in on Sinestro's breakout from Spazkaban.

We know that both John and Guy will appear in the Man of Tomorrow movie, and I bet John is a full GL by then.

The Midnight Boys and House of R have Noah clocked. Apparently the subtitles have John talking with Noah about a list of girls he has been seeing when it focuses on the cop getting the call. Noah is writing letters at 9 to FEMA. He is interested in politics. Guy is big enough to have a hat ceremony

They made a point to show us the Manhunter telling Noah to remember everything she'd told him, if anything happened to her. So they did seem to be setting something up with him.

Curious about that too. How long can they last? Can a sentry be shot, and bleed?...the body went through an autopsy, so it would need to be pretty dang real.
bobinator

I think it's far more likely that the dead Hal is a clone/fake than it is the "sentry."

But I think it's even more likely that original Hal is actually dead and they're going to make a new one using that machine and his backup consciousness.

Like I said last page, I always approach coming up with theories from that Chekhov's gun "why did they show us this?" standpoint and the biggest flag for me is that they showed that her fancy machine that can regrow limbs and skin also leaves a mark on people. None of that was necessary for the plot of this show.

That's the ring that makes John a GL. It's already working for him. Thats how they solved the problem of John and the PE teacher having 2 rings. That sealed box is getting opened by hologram Hal and it's going to have a lantern in it. The ring gets recharged and John says the oath.

Ahh, you mean a living, physical being of flesh cloned from Hal. Interesting.

I think your second sentence is more likely....a clone of Hal is made from whatever tech the manhunter had to heal people, and that Hal clone stays in Rushville to live happily ever after with the sheriff. I've heard that Kyle Chandler is only signed for this season, not the Man of Tomorrow movie like Aaron Pierre is.

I totally agree that's how John will become a GL - through Hal's decommissioned ring and lantern that apparently can just sit lying around. Apparently the Guardians don't really keep track of these superpowered things. And yes, it will be really frustrating. It would just lend itself to the idea that there's no "rules" in the world of this show other whatever they need to happen at that particular moment in the plot.

John Stewart should not just be able to find a decommissioned ring and become a GL, no matter how entitled he is thanks to his psycho mom's brainwashing.
bobinator
How long do you want to ignore this user?

What does "decommissioned" even mean if it still just works like normal? I just can't see any way to make that make any kind of narrative sense that doesn't involve the guardians being complete idiots or it being a plot so complicated and convoluted that it doesn't even make any sense.
FL_Ag1998
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Precisely. We'll see how the season finishes out, but as currently depicted, this whole Green Lantern thing - the rings, the physical lanterns, the title, the decision behind who gets to be a Green Lantern, the power behind it all - is shapeless and needs some definition.
Mathguy64
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
"Decommissioned" to me means the guardians didnt let the ring choose the next GL. They could have said "retired".
bobinator
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
To me "decommissioned" means it doesn't work anymore. In this case I'd imagine that whatever "powers" it is no longer active. Or at least at the bare minimum they made sure it didn't have any charge left and had no way of being charged. And if Hal's lantern is ALSO still missing, you'd think they'd have that ring a little better protected, sure seemed easy enough for Gardner to get it even though he's not supposed to or whatever.

Or maybe that's the moral of this story, the green lanterns are having a fall-of-the-Soviet Union moment where nobody is really sure who is in charge of what and their item tagging system is off the rails. Just rings and lanterns floating around out there willy nilly.

I wonder if they will try to say that the ring was taken out of service and should work, but it works for John because he is "different". For example, the bird projection that should have been "impossible"

I'd have bought that if he didn't already tap it on a headstone or whatever to get it to work. If it would have just worked because he has some kind of magical abilities that would be easier to buy into.
