The other thing I don't really understand is why everyone hates Hal now and why he went to prison. Can someone do a TL;DR for me there because it seems to me that he wasn't directly responsible for what happened.

If he never comes to Rushville, the alien guys still come, they still ultimately find the Manhunter, a fight still happens, etc, etc.

Or how the sheriff's son might be the next great President because he wrote two letters to FEMA. WTF??

Have you never bragged about your kid's accomplishments?

Everyone was pissed because the entire town had a cush life with the manhunter there. No one was getting sick, everyone was taken care of and protected.

Hal and John came in and killed their guardian angel, so to speak. Along with all the people that died because of them. Small town. Every death is a friend or family of half the town.

Soooo, Hal went to prison because people in the town were mad at him? That's not how the law works. Hal was bringing in an intergalactic killing machine! That same intergalactic killing machine was actually the one destroying the town and killing all of the people! That manhunter was a cult leader - a space Charles Manson or Jim Jones, lol. Hal was bringing it to justice So, if somehow in this f'd up Lanterns plot Hal went to prison for doing his job, then John should have gone too for being his accomplice!

Also Hal lecturing Stewart on the use of profanity, saying he heard less of it during ten years of incarceration. Seriously? Hal has dropped more F bombs than the Sopranos unless that was Jordan's humor and I missed it. Honestly, I didn't understand the reason for that entire breakfast interaction, perhaps it will be revealed in the next two weeks

I think the key takeaway is Hal saying "don't tell anyone you were here", like there is still something going on in Rushville.

Because sending Stewart to prison was simply prove his theory that everyone in Nebraska is racist as he clearly stated

Honestly I take it that Hal took the fall like he said at breakfast

The scenario I'm going with in my head, though this was not at all spelled out in the show, is that Hal DID want to meet with John to tell him exactly that ("something is still going on here"), but his mom made up the apology thing because she knew that was the only way he'd go.
MROD92

So much they collaborated to get Stewart there, instead of actually telling him Hal simply continued to berate him, call him scared and offer him pancakes? Maybe

I'll hold out, perhaps the final episodes tie it all together

He didn't start getting on him until John said he was there for an apology right? I don't think Hal knew that's the excuse his mom came up with to get him there is what I'm saying.

He definitely suspected he was in mortal danger, he looked extremely desparate saying "dont tell anyone you were here!!"

My son told me he's come across a theory that the Guardian that john stewart gave the ring to at the end of the last episode was actually someone that helped break Sinestro out and will help him form the Yellow Lanterns. So, the reason Sinestro knew so much about John Stewart even though Sinestro has been in prison on Oa was because that Gaurdian was feeding him info.

If that theory is true would she just turn in Hal's ring in 2016 to the actual Guardians? Clearly she did because Guy was able to fly to Oa and get it. I guess maybe she actually is a Guardian, just a corrupted one. Her goal was to push John Stewart to "steal" the ring from Hal, meanwhile influencing him enough that he'd become a Yellow Lantern rather than a Green one. Hell, the way John was raised I can easily see him becoming a Yellow Lantern rather than a Green one. But when John declined to accept the ring her plan went down the drain. So, she had no choice but to just turn Hal's ring into the full Guardians and find another way to break Sinestro out.

Lol, that's the thing about these Abrams-esque/Lindelof mystery-box shows....they rely on providing vague questions and then just letting the audience entertain themselves by generating theories as to what it all means.

So is Hal Jordan for sure dead? Seems crazy to kill him off so unceremoniously.
CNN is an enemy of the state and should be treated as such.

Pretty certain if Hal said "Junior I respect the **** out of you and you deserved the ring" even if he meant it John wouldn't have stuck around. Almost needed to berate him as a final goodbye so as to stick around

I wish that was true.

All of those are aliens issues. None of the humans knew what a Manhunter was. Hell, Hal didn't even really know what one was. All they see is Hal and John coming into town and a bunch of **** going down. Everything getting destroyed. A bunch of people dying. And Hal no longer has the ring and backing of the Guardians to keep him out of trouble.

Hence him saying he took the fall. It wasn't his fault, but he took the blame for it all.

There definitely is an art to spurning this type of engagement. Definitely can't do this when you can just binge the show the day it releases, either. I hate waiting for new episodes, but the combo of the mystery-box show and a weekly release cycle makes me locked in on theories.

Okay but what was Hal actually charged with? He obviously wasn't the one blasting lasers from space and tearing the town apart. He wasn't the one who charged onto the ranch and started that whole shootout.

He's literally standing in the middle of the town at the cafe when everything starts. Several people saw, including a cop, him actually trying to save people, including one person he did save.

And fine, the town hates him because the Manhunter was their guardian angel so they're all going to lie on the stand or whatever to get him in jail, but this is the WORLD FAMOUS Hal Jordan. There's no satellites showing what did happen, no witnesses they can call to explain that there was actually another threat that Hal and John were trying to prevent from happening? This case was handled in a local small town court?

I get that this isn't a courtroom drama, but I still don't think it's that much to ask for at least SOME explanation of how he ended up in prison.

I imagine being ringless was a sign to the world that the Guardians no longer trusted Hal and in many cases presumably the world sees it as a sign of being guilty. I agree it is a little hand wavey but I can see it

So, here's where I am on some of this. We have had several Chekhov's Guns in this show, and while I don't really have a coherent theory, there's a lot on the board.

  • John can project a living creature even without the ring on (though he does need it to initially create it)
  • The living creature is corporeal (probably obvious as that's the whole point of the green lantern, but worth noting)
  • There is a device in town that can regrow limbs and skin
  • This device leaves a tell-tale mark on people
  • Things can be projected that are not green

Yeah, for the longest time I was all in on the full release drop schedule and binging shows all at once. But I've circled back around to preferring the weekly release , which allows shows to build up momentum over the course of the season.
bobinator
How long do you want to ignore this user?

There needs to be some kind of independent committee that decides which shows warrant weekly releases versus full season drops.

Like we can go ahead and drop all of Reacher at once.
FL_Ag1998
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Lolol, yeah, nothing about Reacher screams that it needs a weekly release.

But then a show like Spider-Noir would have greatly benefitted from a weekly release IMO, which could have built up word of mouth and in return the viewership.

So, are you suggesting we'll get a "regrown"/projection Hal that continues to exist in the real world?

I have heard the suggestion that the projection Hal will just settle down with the sheriff in Rushville - a way of giving Hal a happy ending even though the real Hal is dead.

Also, are we thinking the manhunter grandson killed Hal? That's my current belief.

He could have been charged for the murder of the manhunter. John took the heart, so there is literally no proof she's not human except for the word of the guy who just had the ring taken from him.
bobinator
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
I don't really have a full theory yet, though I would think it's more likely that the projection/regrown/whatever is the one that died. I don't know if that functionally makes a difference though.

Oh, another on the list is that we know that Hal can "backup" his consciousness.

But yeah, that's an awful lot of pieces on the board pointing to him still being alive in some way.

I think it's 50/50 that the grandson IS the manhunter. Though it's not entirely clear how that whole process works.

The thing I still hate about this show is the way they've treated the character of Hal Jordan. Now that he's been in prison for the past 10 years, I am not sure that's redeemable. He's had his breaking bad runs in the comics, like every character has, but he's always been considered the greatest Green Lantern.

Now in the DCU he's largely an incompetent semi-racist / misogynist who's stumbled his way through a failed turn as a GL. I can't get over that.

I think we let this play out a little more before deciding that for sure. I think there's a decent chance that this entire chain of events is a move by Jordan to uncover some kind of huge conspiracy or something.
CharleyKerfeld

Based on the resources that Rich Naked Man had along with the Manhunter's influence, I think it would be pretty easy for the state of Nebraska to very rapidly accuse Hal, get him through a trial, and get him incarcerated, especially if he plead guilty to avoid the repercussions on John, the sheriff, etc.

You have to assume Rich Naked Man has plenty of sway in the state/region, otherwise he wouldn't have gotten away with the place he had and the militia he commanded.

We see that Hal has no friends, lives in an empty house, drives a POS, and dresses like a bum. He has no need for money - hell he manifests a dollar just to play the juke box at the honky tonk. So if he doesn't have the ring on, he's a guy that gets one phone call and then they could put him away very easily. Nobody in Rushville is on social media the next day saying "OMG GL is being held without bail. Green lives matter!"
bobinator
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
It's not like he was being held in the local jail. They mention he returned to Rushville after he got out of federal prison. Word is definitely going to get out and that scene at the roadside taco stand was enough to show that everyone else in the world likes Hal Jordan, so I'm fairly sure they'd want some kind of explanation for what went down that resulted in him not being Green Lantern and going to prison.

I mean again, it's not THAT big of a deal and it doesn't really necessarily impact the core plot of the show, but for me it would have been nice to see that fallout.

Plea deal since they didn't have a murder weapon.

Look, I'm not saying I have all the answers, but someone going to jail is one of the most realistic things that superhero shows never talk about. All this death and destruction and no one gets punished?
