I think it's safe to assume there will never be a reason for anyone to watch Supergirl.

On that WE ALL can agree!

Thus far, not only do you not need to have seen supergirl, you don't really need to have seen anything.

Well, except maybe a treatise on racism in America.

But no - just watched Supergirl last night (after the latest Lantern episode) and there is nothing related in that movie. Heck, there's barely anything related to Earth in that movie which is probably part of the reason it flopped.

I've tried three times and fell asleep within the first 10 minutes each time. So, I'm going to keep it handy for those nights I need to get to bed fast.

The episode focused on making the son "lantern ready" was a waste and zzzzzzz

Couple Questions...

When John got his burns repaired, he told the Manhunter that he knew she'd killed some dude. Who was he referring to? I assume it was the reason she's been hiding in Nebraska this whole time, but I didnt know who he was talking about. Maybe I missed something.

Second question...why didnt Billy Macon kill that dude, when he had the lasers pointed on him in his office? He said it was because he was afraid the guy would self detonate, but if you're going to die anyway, why not take a chance and kill him?

Abin Sur is the GL who brought he Manhunter to Nebraska. Abin Sur, in almost ever version of GL, is the dying GL whose ring Hal Jordan inherits. Hal tells the story in the interview on TV in the first scene of the show.
I'm surprised they haven't had Abin Sur in a flashback. In the 2011 Ryan Reynolds movie, he was played by Temeura Morrison (Jango/Boba Fett).

I think Macon was still concerned for the lives of his men. Those guys blowing themselves up were taking out big chunks of real estate, not just 1:1.

Thanks for the explanation.

Do we know why Abin Sur took the Manhunter to Nebraska? Why he lost the ring to Hal?

He got killed by the Manhunter, and Hal got the ring. Other than that, do we know the details of how all that happened?

I think his ship was damaged. Could have exited hyperspace or whatever the DCU uses and crash landed in Nebraska

Gotcha.

Is that DL Lore, or did I just miss this in the show?

It might just be me, but I feel like they needed to explain the backstory about the Manhunter/Nebraska a bit more.

You kind of missed the exposition. From what the show has presented, it's assumed the Manhunter romanced Abin Sur or Abin Sur had some affinity for her, so decided to help her hide instead of destroying her like he was supposed to. They don't give any details of the crash but we are told the Manhunter chose to kill him because he was the only being in the universe who would know where she was.

She kills Abin Sur, or mortally wounds him, or maybe causes the crash that kills him. We don't really know exactly. The Ring is now on Earth and goes off to find a new bearer. It apparently visits several candidates that night and they all fail its test until it goes to Hal Jordan, who passes the test and the Ring brings him to Abin Sur as he is dying. We aren't really told much about that interaction between the two in the show's universe, but I'm sure there are several iterations of that interaction from the comic books.

You might benefit from a website like gizmodo that does episode reviews/recaps after every one to get more insight into what's going on.

Here's the one from Sunday. The other episodes are easibly searchable on the website.

Me either. I wasn't much of a DC fan before they ruined the best hero, The Flash. Now I'm even less of one. But I'm really loving this series so far. The two leads just work so well together.

Apparently the Spanish subtitles might have revealed a spoiler.

According to the Spanish subtitles, the Hal Jordan that was in the motel was the "Clone Hal Jordan". Makes me wonder if the dead one is the clone as well.
bobinator

Just started episode 5, and I can't look past that chick's nose. I guess manhunters don't know how to fix their nose, and not look like a retired boxer.

My son was telling me he's heard that theory online as well. There's things about that theory which don't add up, primarily that Hal's sole mission was to take the man hunter to Oa. So, are we to believe that the real Hal would leave Earth and leave his clone to complete that mission? I suppose, but only if real Hal determined there was something bigger, more important he had to do than bring the manhunter in.

Or possibly, bringing the manhunter in to secure his position was just a ruse by Hal and he's heading to Oa to root out whatever shady stuff is going on with the Guardians. Because no doubt, there is some shady stuff going on there which will be focus of the remaining episodes. So far, this show is nothing like True Detective. However, if the two polar opposite partners - John and Hal - come together in order to take down the bigger evil (corruption in the Guardians) then maybe this show does start to resemble True Detective. If you watched True Detective you'll understand why.

Aside from that, the idea that the dead Hal in 2026 is his clone has been floated from week 1.

Lol, and ol' Johm Stewart must be reeaally hard up. The showrunners could have at least cast a hotter woman to play the manhunter. Maybe then it would be believable that he'd jump into bed with her and then fall for her.

Yeah, I was questioning the same thing in episode 1 or 2 (whatever it was). I can't stand looking at her nose when she's on screen. She's not engaging or attractive.

I don't think we need to spoiler tag something that MIGHT have been given away by the spanish language captions do we? That's not exactly like a reddit script leak or something.

Also, I disagree that this show isn't like True Detective. I think it's very clearly inspired by the structure of that show, even if the plot isn't. Sprawling investigations and mysteries across multiple timelines, very dialogue-driven as opposed to action driven, one of the main characters banging someone's wife, etc.

And I love a good wild theory, but the clone thing doesn't make any sense to me at all.

So we agree, all it needs is a fully nekkid Alexandra Daddario to be a perfect show?

I don't think it needs it to be perfect, but any show with it is automatically perfect. Kind of a "all squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares" deal.

I doubt the theory. Usually subtitles in other languages have words that are just an approximation of the word in English if there is no well-known translation.

Yeah, agreed that clone theory is really out there. I told my son that I really doubted that's the case. So my rambling above was just me trying to work out how the clone theory could make sense.

To be fair, I'd have been willing to believe that entire scene was some kind of ruse except that Hal definitely had the real ring.

One of the directors is an Indian woman, and at the end of the credits, there are Hindi credits.

I saw that it's also being dubbed in Hindi...so I wonder if there is some sort of Bollywood tie with the producers or something?

There's a new mid season trailer out for the remaining episodes, and watching that, it finally feels to me like a version of True Detective. I say that because of the deeper mystery plus interaction between our two main characters that's shown in the trailer. The previous episodes feel like superficial b.s. that were necessary to get to this point. I think they could have gotten here sooner with better writing, but these last few episodes look like the wait will be worth it because they appear way more intense and exciting.

And I loved Hal calling out Mr. Sanctimonious (aka John Stewart), pointing out to John that he's not innocent either and they both have blood on their hands.

I'm sure someone's already mentioned this, but I think they're setting up John's dad (or mom or both) to be a villain.

I still don't get how you don't think there's similarities between this and True Detective.

Another HUGE one is that a massive battle/shootout happened in a past timeline in the fifth episode of the season to wrap up the story in that timeline and set the stage for what's happening in the present-day timeline.
CharleyKerfeld
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Well that trailer is really interesting, because it suggests Hal is alive and interacting with John in 2016 - based on John's mustache at least.

It is bizarre to say since he's a famous actor and I don't know him, but I'm so happy Nathan Fillion has gotten into the DC in such a great role.I think I've watched Firefly about 500 times and love that he is back in such a cool sci-fi role.

I know he had Castle and the Rookie, but sci-fi is where he belongs.
