The real question is: What the hell was Abin Sur doing in Nebraska in the first place?

Back to the plot...

I gotta rewatch the episode. Been listening to a Youtube video on it.

What are the odds the sheriff is an alien? (think about the interrogation shot of her reflection in the middle of the alien that Hal had slammed against the mirror/glass) Or perhaps the whole town is? Maybe the alien-hating ranchers are actually one species and they're simply trying to enlist an unwitting Hal and John into their war against another alien species?

The Guardians and Abin Sur's crash and Hal being forced to train John as his replacement are going to factor into a larger conspriracy.

I didn't think he was picked by Hal. Didn't they say he was picked by the big bosses or something like that?

I got the sense he was chosen as Hal's potential/eventual replacement and now Hal is forced to train him.

Yeah, I think that's right.

So, this is one of the variations from the comics. In the comic book the ring essentially can't be used by anyone other than the one Green Lantern it was assigned to. And the ring only leaves that Lantern after he dies; it then flies off the old Lantern and to whoever it decides is worthy of being the new Lantern. It's not even the Guardians (Hal's bosses) that decide who the next Lantern will be, its the "willpower"/force behind the ring that decides. So, we'll have to see if the show goes any deeper into that, because this is an area where they've deviated from the actual lore of the comics.

Which, ultimately, we really dont know much yet. There is a lot still shrouded in mystery. What we've been told up to this point could be a red herring.

So if Hal uploaded a "backup" of his consciousness into the ring in 2006 with the secret coded message that there's "hail in nebraska", why would that be a surprise to the Hal in 2016?

Right, because the whole comic book superhero genre hasn't already been done to death. Still so ripe for new ideas like the heroes being on the ropes, but all banding together at the last second to defeat the undefeatable bad guy. All while destroying half of New York for the 50th time.

I dont think the message was from 2006, I think it was just the last time he did the backup.
Not saying you are wrong, just how I took that scene

More than a little surprised we didn't return to 2026. Maybe that is the last 2 episodes of the season type deal. Overall a great followup to a stellar premier

Yeah, the only reason I assume it's from 2006 is because I asked AI and that's what it told me. And when John tells Hal about the message at the taco shop later John says something to the effect of Hal used to be nicer, so it's definitely a message from the past.

So now there are multiple factions involved and we have a whole town of suspects who might be the Manhunter.

1. Is it someone who seems harmless like the sheriff or her lawyer husband?

2. Is it someone more obvious like the guy who owns the ranch or his Seinfeld two-face sometimes hot, sometimes not wife?

3. Is the Manhunter the rancher's "mysterious benefactor" who gave them the tech that's at the football stadium to identify aliens so his trained militia can kill any other faction that comes looking for him?

4. Is it someone we've never met?

5. Did "they" do something to Hal when he was under the knife at the hospital that has no other patients?

6. Did Sinestro try to overthrow the Guardians because they sought to replace him with a pick of their own the same way that they are now doing with Hal/John?

Thought Stewart's brawl with the aliens at Hal's house and in the van/on the freeway was a great callback to Will Smith pursuing the alien suspect at the start of Men in Black when you realize Stewart isn't just some guy, he's a force even without the ring.

My guess: the wife. But I feel like it's bound to either be someone we've met (maybe only casually) or the currently unknown benefactor. Or is this a Magnum PI situation where the guy taking care of the estate is the benefactor?

And had the same thought on Jon, we knew he's well trained but he can really handle himself. I was thinking he might get away in the van, then his attacker bounced him off the roof one handed and I was like ok these other dudes are not human.

Overall really enjoyed this episode, we've got the shape of the plot now and I'm totally in. Still very curious to see how the jumps between 2016 and current day work, the 2016 story looks like it will only span a few days until things come to a head.

OK, by my count we have one vote for the wife and one for Robin Masters.

I think it's someone we haven't met yet.

Or
The backup personality is from 2006 when he used to be nicer, but all it does is provide a persona/interface fie whatever automated system.
That scenario would also work for "hal used to be nicer"
Especially since the message interacted with Jon

I'm sure this is no original thought by me, but a mysterious benefactor who hates aliens and is willing to weaponize people or insane robots with advanced technology to keep them from finding a home on Earth certainly points to one person.

Quick video from Lindelof talking about how they arrived at Hal/John with Guy Gardner already existing in the new universe and how Lanterns fits into the current DC timeline.

Really starting to love this show. Kyle Chandler is just nails. One small nitpick, there have been some missed opportunities for some cool brief scenes. Like when Hal is telling John how the ring chose him, that would've been an awesome scene. Or getting a glimpse of what John saw when forced to experience Antaan's memory of his world being destroyed. Just small moments that I think would have added to the show. Maybe they are saving those for later.

I just caught up on this show last night and forgive me because I don't know the DC world's technology lingo, but I interpreted all of this as basically Hal had set up a an alert to monitor the Green Lantern monitoring network (or whatever) and deliver him a coded message if anything suspicious happened in Rushville, Nebraska in the form of his old backup.

The only thing that makes me think it's maybe not the wife is that I would put the odds at like 10:1 against the field that it's her. William Macon is so show-obvious that it's almost certainly not him.

I'm not putting the following in Spoiler tags because its legit just fan guesswork that I stumbled across, not plot leaks or anything. But I will put lots of space before diving in.....

There's a theory that everyone in the town are martians, with some being red and some being green. That theory is also positing that the sheriff might be a retconned version of Miss Martian (aka M'gann M'orzz), who in the comics poses as a green martian before being revealed as a white martian. And finally, the granny/rancher's wife is the Manhunter.

I think I really just have two questions, though one we definitely don't know the answer to yet but interested in people's theories (as long as they aren't comic-informed-definite-spoilers)

- What's up Macon's militia group? Were they recruited to move to Rushville by the as-yet-unnamed-but-probably-Lex-Luthor benefactor, did they always live there? Do they know they're protecting the manhunter? Or is that just a byproduct that the manhunter is taking advantage of? (I currently presume this is the case which is why I put extremely heavy odds that the wife is the manhunter.)

- I don't really understand the football game plot. Were they going to try and blow up everyone at the game in the hopes of killing the manhunter, and if so, then why didn't they? Or were they trying to somehow use the game to infiltrate Rushville?
CharleyKerfeld
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think you have to assume the aliens that got killed at the football game knew / suspected the Manhunter(s) would be at the game, and thought something along the lines of a large crowd being able to shield them from being detected by it.

I wish just once they'd break the fourth wall on some of the ham-fisted names in DC. Like have a scene where Hal says, "I can't believe you were capable of these actions, Sinestro" and Sinestro says, "I mean look, it's pretty much right there in my name."
bobinator

But do they have some kind of "manhunter detector" or were they just going to like... go on whoever's vibes seemed off? If their plan is "find it or blow up the whole town" why didn't they go ahead and blow up the whole town?

It seems like they are empathetic enough to not kill people unless there's no other option. Or maybe they want something else. Since the Manhunters are robots, I'm sure getting their tech would be worth a lot to plenty of factions.

Every time we try to answer a question, it really just exposes how little we know about anything, which is pretty refreshing in this era of dumb-down TV
bobinator
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Yeah there's a lot more stuff we don't know, which is great. That just seems like a plot point we're already supposed to understand and I'm not sure I really understand their plan.

The best I've got is that they were somehow aware that the militia is protecting the town from aliens (but unaware that they had technology to identify them by scanning them) and anyone new showing up in town would immediately get flagged and they were hoping to use the football game as cover to get into town without being noticed or something, but even that seems extremely unlikely to work.

If the game doesn't end in a dramatic field goal and field rush then the two groups of fans wouldn't have even interacted to begin with, were they just going to like look at them from across the field?

When Antaan is explaining what happened to them in Rushville he tells John that the Manhunter emits unique radiation but to figure out who it was they needed to get close, but their team was exposed and killed. So it sounds like if they're in whatever range they could determine who the Manhunter is.

Right now it's refreshing, but it will only stay that way if they actually answer all of these questions that they continue to bring up.

Lost is one of my absolute favorite shows to this day. But that's because of the characters and actors and not because of the stupid mystery surrounding the island. The mystery was great in the first two seasons or so, then just proceeded to get dumber and dumber each season. Eventually they ended the show without satisfactorily answering many of the mysteries they brought up. And that's because they admittedly started the show without having any real answers to these mystery boxes they introduced. But they soon realized they could hook the audience by simply introducing one mystery box after another.

Since then Damon Lindelof has been one of the kings of mystery box tv. Hopefully he has some payoffs this time around. There's still some dumb stuff (for example, if Hal had a tire iron in his hand, WTF didn't he simply walk through the metal detector with just that instead of using the tire iron to pry off the car grill which was in reality just all plastic? Oh right, because that wouldn't have allowed Hal to make a comment later to "Junior" about the rental insurance. Completely illogical action just to set up a lame yuck-yuck line).

There shouldn't be any real comic book spoilers for this show because this storyline is not really based on any specific comic book storyline, and even a lot of the characters and their actions are incompatible with their actual comic book versions.

Any guesses about the plot will be just educated guesses based off of what the show runners might pull from the comics lore.
