I like this but I think it's more likely she's like a rogue guardian than not one. Between all of the communications between the characters I think it would have been outed already if she wasn't one at all right?

She's talking to John, the actual guardians are talking to Hal (they did tell him about John presumably), she's talking to John's parents, Hal and John are talking to each other, Hal is probably talking to other lanterns, etc.

I do think she is at best a rogue agent

Anyone have any thoughts/predictions for tonight instead of just spinning in circles? My big concern right now is that based on some of the conversation from the people involved with this show they expected the "the wife is the manhunter" thing to be some kind of "oh ****" twist but it absolutely did not land for me. Not only was it predictable but the way it was done was kind of strange:

My big question is how we go from 2016 to 2026 and when that happens. It seems like there's some kind of closure to the 2016 case, that we should be rapidly approaching, then we're brought to present day by something else.

And the fact that Guy Gardner is the one with the ring.

John and Hal think they solve what they need to solve in 2016 and wrap up the case. That takes us up until the very last episode of this season. In the last episode we fast forward to 2026 when Hal discovers that he and John were actually duped in 2016. But whatever it is causes him to get killed. We end the last episode of this season with the last scene of Episode 1 - the sheriff showing John Hal's body in the stadium. The ring didn't go to John because he and his parents were never really communicating with the real Guardians. They were communicating with the fraud-Guardian. So John hasn't earned the ring yet; he'll earn it over Season 2 (or during Man of Tomorrow).

Ok, yeah, Laura Linney might be a rogue Guardian, or representing a faction of rogue Guardians.

I actually think we might be done with 2016 in this episode or the next. I think we wrap that arc up and then do the final episodes in 2026 addressing the remainder of why Guy got the ring. We have seen a clip of Guy visiting John in county jail

Another great episode with questions answered and so many more taking their place

I'm not going to try and unpack it all right now, but a few minutes after finishing the episode, I feel like that was one of the most dazzling hours of television I've seen in years, maybe decades.

Is Green lantern this easy to defeat in the comics? You simply have to grab him and wrestle the ring off his finger? The magic ring, that chooses the wearer, doesn't have the ability to stay on the finger of the person it chose?

That really seems weird to me. Green Lantern is just a guy with a nice weapon?

It's pretty clear the ring is racist against white people.

Only another person of extreme willpower could remove it and use it.

Cue the famous scene.

Batman mocks GL and says the ring is the hero, not GL. But later Hal saves Batman's life without the ring and Batman admits he's wrong.

Yeah, what Charley said. In the actual comics, no, not just any ol' Joe Schmoe can just take the ring and start using it. Its another change the show has made for convenience.

What is the change from the comics. He posted an exact comic image that someone with willpower can in fact take it. John Stewart is not a regular Joe Schmoe

It also took a space laser bringing down a building around him and trapping him in the rubble. But sure, easy peasy.

John gets the ring off because he's got the will power to do so from an entire lifetime training to become GL. The show follows the comics spot on in this instance.

And the ring was basically spent even before that shield. Seems like it runs out fast though for plot and special effects budget.

I was actually replying to Lathspell's question - whether anyone could just wrestle the ring off a GL's finger. Lath wasn't talking about just John Stewart, he asked a question about people in general taking the ring off a GL. My point was that Charley was correct, there's a little more to it.

Plus, there's always the fact that over decades different writers may change the lore slightly during their writing run.

Yeah guys, I wasn't arguing, just agreeing with Charley's explanation to Lath. Sorry if my last sentence seemed that it was. That last sentence was geared more towards my interpretation of the show's overall approach to the ring. But that could just easily be me missing some clues or dialogue about Hal's connection to the ring as the GL.

My least favorite part of the show is Hal not keeping it charged. Once he gets shot when it's on low power, you figure he'd be recharging it every 10 minutes.

I think for me it's less of an issue throughout the show, I think you could kind of handwave it off that he didn't know he was going to need it so much in Nebraska.

But you'd think knowing that he's going into some kind of big battle in this episode that he'd keep that lantern a little closer. Get a packpack or something man.

Does the ring run out that fast in the comics? seems like a supernatural ring should probably have a better battery life than an apple watch.

No. This appears to be a plot trick they are doing to depower Hal. They should have just powered up the manhunter appropriately. Usually a manhunter is more powerful than a lantern 1:1.

And then realized we still get 4 more episodes. Feels like so much has happened.

I think next episode will open up showing John getting arrested and then Guy showing up to talk. Then we get a flashback or dialogue on what happened in the last 10 years with Guy getting the ring

That was going to my next post. Last night was like an "Episode 9" of Game of Thrones' typical 10-episode season, where you get body blow after body blow and then Episode 10 picks up the pieces. Other than knowing Guy Gardner shows up, the next 4 episodes are wild west territory.

One thing I really liked last night was Hal coming down hard on John for just assuming Hal would kill the Manhunter. No killing is a big part of the GL Corps lore.

The manhunter said "im going to make Hal drain the ring, and then im going to kill him"
Then we see him having to use it constantly the rest of the episode.
Even so, they also previously established in this show he no longer being extremely diligent at recharging it.

So I have a (potentially multi-part) question about this as a non-comics person. The green lanterns work for the guardians right? So they don't kill, but the guardians do?

And, presumably, we're including artificial life as life?

The Guardians created the Manhunters way before the GL Corps, and then the Manhunters had their Terminator/Cylon / Matrix moment where they decided organics sucked and started killing trillions before the Guardians shut them down.

I havent' read a lot of comics where the Guardians play a huge role, but they sound like a bunch of a-holes who are willing to sacrifice lives "for the greater good" with no real moral issues doing so or covering stuff up from the GL Corps. Every time they are in a plot line, it feels like it's because they are screwing around.

With the revelation that Antaan's character was previously in a relationship with the Manhunter, do we think that Abin Sur might have developed a similar attachment to "her" and that's why he tried to let her live on Earth. Although that is a terrible decision, even if she hadn't killed him.

A more fascinating question to me is what exactly was the manhunter's endgame? Just keep living in Nebraska forever? What's the point of survival for a machine if there are no other goals to achieve?

Kind of a fascinating question, especially considering where we are in AI news.

Before this gets too far, I'm assuming I don't need to watch Supergirl before I watch this? Granted, we may not know answer to that until end of season.

Thus far, not only do you not need to have seen supergirl, you don't really need to have seen anything.

I think it's safe to assume there will never be a reason for anyone to watch Supergirl.
