Watched it last night. It is off to a good start.

I see words like "woke" out there for the show and didn't see any of that, myself. Is that just because of John Stewart being black?

It's possible that there's an allegory here, and Lindelof certainly doesn't shy away from social commentary, but at this point anything interpreting that requires a massive amount of speculation.
I'm not a big GL reader (not to mention that his powers can be a bit hokey/contrived) and I thought it was awesome. As a whole DC's more mature takes on the genre have been really good and a refreshing change.

Let's talk about that ending. Do we think it's really Hal that's dead? The show gave us plenty of hints that it's not...the comment about there being 14 species of aliens that can pass completely as human....the hologram version of him that showed up earlier. It would be a great twist to reveal that's not really Hal. Buuuttt, it's been reported that both the John Stewart and Guy Gardner versions of Green Lantern appear in the Man of Tomorrow movie, but supposedly Kyle Chandler does not.

I think it's real just from a logistics standpoint
We still need an explanation of Guy

You're right, and see my updated post above. Maybe that's not really Hal, but he does end up dying by the last episode.
"Haha, tricked you guys, that's not really Hal!
"Wait, another plot twist! Hal really does die in some other way so that the ring can pass to John!"

Will the remainder of the season take place in the 2016 era?

We don't know the resolution of the 2016 plot. I have to imagine we will split between then and now

Possible it's a fakeout, but in the post credits episode discussion video Lindelof talks about how killing Hal was their big early decision on the story. Then Kyle Chandler says when he read that in the script he knew it was gonna be good. So seems like it's the actual outcome, unless they're putting a lot of effort into the misdirection.

I really don't understand the backlash. The complaints I have heard...
- called Lanterns vs. Green Lantern
- not set in space
- no GL uniform
- too much cussing
- militia scene was too much "on the nose"

Hal foreshadows it in the episode by basically saying it.
I'm in on this. Good show. Don't get the woke complaints but I did scoff at the shooting as they write it off as typical Nebraska rednecks with guns. That was a cop out considering I haven't heard of too many shootings at high school football games in all white Nebraska....because rednecks.
That's fake news propaganda...but maybe that is driving the woke complaints?

The cop didn't say Nebraska people shoot each other all the time at football games, she said they all carry guns. When a massive brawl started at a football game, it's not a stretch that someone would fire a gun, and the situation would downgrade from there.

I didn't think he was picked by Hal. Didn't they say he was picked by the big bosses or something like that?
I got the sense he was chosen as Hal's potential/eventual replacement and now Hal is forced to train him.

Yeah, I think that's right.

So, this is one of the variations from the comics. In the comic book the ring essentially can't be used by anyone other than the one Green Lantern it was assigned to. And the ring only leaves that Lantern after he dies; it then flies off the old Lantern and to whoever it decides is worthy of being the new Lantern. It's not even the Guardians (Hal's bosses) that decide who the next Lantern will be, its the "willpower"/force behind the ring that decides. So, we'll have to see if the show goes any deeper into that, because this is an area where they've deviated from the actual lore of the comics.

From what I understand the comic focuses pretty strongly on race, so I get why people feel it's woke and don't like it.
I on the other hand didn't mind episode one, it didn't pull me in but it's fine enough that I'll try another episode.
